by Cathi Roberts, Volunteer Coordinator

In late July, I met with and “hired” several new Library volun‐ teers. Not exactly earth‐shattering news. You might expect that as Volunteer Coordinator I would do this frequently. But as it happens, that was the first opportunity I’ve had during 2013 to add new adult applicants to our volunteer roster at the Corvallis Library. With a volunteer force numbering more than 200 (plus 20‐25 more who volunteer at the branch libraries) one might think that several people would come and go each month, and yes, we definitely do lose volunteers when jobs and school schedules change or families move away. But most volunteers seem to like it here, and lately our rates of turnover have been extremely low. This is definitely a cool place to volunteer! But I’ve been wondering what other factors might be involved, so I did a little online research. Here’s what I found out: I’m not sure if library volunteers are counted under the Statewide, volunteerism has increased recently. In 2011, “Education” or “Civic” labels, but we definitely count! For the Oregon was ranked 8th highest in the nation, prompting Governor fiscal year just ended, 286 different people volunteered in our Kitzhaber to say "Oregon's move into the top 10 states for four libraries, racking up 14,620 hours with an estimated value volunteering comes as no surprise to me. Every visit to an Oregon of over $320,000. And our crew has staying power, too. About town or city is an opportunity to see local residents engaged at 55% of our adult volunteers have been with us for at least three a personal level in their community. Volunteering is a part of years; 23% for 10 years or longer, and a third of those have Oregon's culture and DNA." volunteered for 20 years or more! According to the Corporation for National & Community Service So if you submit a volunteer application, you might have to (www.volunteeringinamerica.gov), in 2011: wait a bit for a placement (just think of it as being in a “Hold”  1.1 million Oregonians volunteered – that’s 35.8% of queue for a really popular book!). Ultimately, your patience could Oregon residents, compared to 26.8% nationally. be rewarded with a 20‐year volunteer career at The Best Library.  Oregon volunteers contributed 136.7 million hours of service, worth an estimated $3 billion (yes, billion, with a B).  Top volunteer areas were Education (32%), Religion (24%), and Social Services (18%).
