Great Re-Imagining of a Classic SeriesBy Dave McWhorterI was a big fan of 1970s "Doomsday +1" that Byrne did, and was excited when I got to see the retouched version as "Doomsday Squad" (even though the story never finished). When I saw this, I knew exactly what it was. It was a great way to see the classic tale re-imagined, and still retain the awesome aspects of the original.My only complaint was lists this product as having "104 pages." Imagine my surprise when I got something which was only slightly over 20. I was fully expecting to get a longer and more complete tale for the money I paid. I even double-checked the listing and it said the edition I purchased was supposed to be 104 pages. should let me know the correct page count before I order something.Byrne has done a number of one-shot graphic novels recently, so I thought this would be another one. Even his "" series had three volumes to encompass the entire work. Based on the way the listing was, I assumed this was another multi-volume epic. I'm excited to read the rest of the tale because of how much I've enjoyed it. But I'm hesitant to purchase the following parts until I know I can obtain the whole story at once.Two thumbs up for John Byrne, half-thumb for .0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. This is a good read, but it jumps around a lot, telling what happened between issues instead of showing us those stories. This makes the story feel rushed. I would have loved to see Byrne tell this story over more issues. Ideally, this could have run for years similarly to The Walking Dead. Doomsday.1 is a must have series for any John Byrne fan.By Ferris BuellerIf you're like me and have been collecting comics since the late 70's onward and you are a fan of John Byrne's artwork then you should remember his work even before his legendary run on Uncanny X-Men or , , and She-.John Byrne and George Perez were the stand out artists of the 1980's and their work is every bit as good now as it was then... but before Byrne's work at Marvel and later DC he worked for a company called Charleton Comics and did a series of a post-apocalyptic science fiction story called Doomsday Plus One. It was a nice series, sort of a post-apocalyptic Fantastic Voyage or Challengers Of The Unknown.After drawing and writing so many great storylines for Marvel and DC Byrne has landed at IDW and besides working on Angel and has resurrected some ghosts from his past most notably John Byrne's Next Men which is arguably for any 'Byrne Victim' his best storytelling work. Now Mr. Byrne has looped around full circle bringing us Doomsday.1 and the first four issue mini series is both a refreshing post-apocalyptic adventure and a nostalgic re-imagining of a childhood memory. I also hope that Mr. Byrne brings back BABE and Danger Unlimted and his continuation of his personally owned creative universe to IDW will be complete.Mark Millar has done so with Millarworld, I want to see Byrneworld where Doomsday.1, BABE, Next Men, and his other creator- owned titles can continue. The only thing that makes it difficult is that while Millar writes scores of titles for his Millarworld, Byrne doesn't just write he draws all of his creations so unless he has lost the fever pitch that he once had in the 80's I believe Mr. Byrne can work on at least 3-4 titles monthly or bi-monthly to make Byrneworld happen.We are promised more Doomsday.1 adventures to follow but I highly suggest picking up Doomsday.1 issues 1-4 or the trade when it becomes available especially if you are a John Byrne fan it's a must own!

About the AuthorJohn Byrne is a comic-book writer and artist. Since the mid-1970s, Byrne has worked on many major American superheroes. Byrne's better-known work has been on ' X-Men and Fantastic Four and the 1986 relaunch of DC Comics' Superman franchise, the first issue of which featured comics' first . Coming into the comics profession exclusively as a penciler, Byrne began co-plotting the X-Men comics during his tenure on them, and launched his writing career in earnest with Fantastic Four (where he started inking his own pencils). During the 1990s he produced a number of creator-owned works, including Next Men and Danger Unlimited. He scripted the first issues of 's series and produced a number of Star Trek comics for IDW Publishing. In 2015, Byrne and his longtime X-Men collaborator were inducted into the comic book hall of fame.
