Moreover, students will learn that an operating system is a program that acts as an intermediary between a user of a computer and the computer hardware. It will help them to plan and design computer systems that integrate computer hardware, software, and communications technologies. After going through this module, you are expected to: • Identify the types of Computer Operating System; • Differentiate Windows/MAC OS and LinuxComputer Operating Systems operationally; • Classify operating system and its logo and developer. 3 Computer Operating Lesson 1 System What’s In TYPES OF COMPUTER OPERATING SYSTEM Operating system or OS is a software program that enables the computer hardware to communicate and operate with the computer software. It is one of the most popular Linux distributions for personal computers and network servers, and has been used as a base for other Linux distributions. Debian 2 Debian was announced in 1993 by Ian Murdock, and the first stable release was made in 1996. The development is carried out by a team of volunteers guided by a project leader and three foundational documents. New distributions are updated continually and the next candidate is released after a time-based freeze. As one of the earliest distributions in Linux's history, Debian was envisioned to be developed openly in the spirit of Linux and GNU. This vision drew the attention and support of the Free Software Foundation, who sponsored the project for the first part of its life.

It’s reliable, secure, and flexible. It’s surprisingly easy to install. It’s easier to use than most people think. It’s highly customizable. It’s built for network- ing. It’s on the cutting edge of technology. It’s cost effective. Most important for the enterprise, it provides control; unlike the alternatives, enterprises can customize Linux to do exactly what’s required. For many people, Fedora Core and Red Hat are Linux. That isn’t quite right. Linux is based on software developed by a worldwide community of volunteers. Much of the initial work was spear- headed by the Free Software Foundation (www.fsf.org). Originally it was developed as a clone of the Unix operating system. Today, it is so much more. It’s evolving to meet the needs of a wide vari- ety of people, such as aerospace engineers, moviemakers, theoretical physicists, and consumers. Even Wal-Mart is selling computers with Linux. Strictly speaking, Linux is just the kernel, the part of the operating system that allows your soft- ware and hardware to communicate.
