Plant and equipment for the production of alloys (ferrosilicon, feromagnesium and silicon- metal) is planned to be built on the site of the industrial zone "Batuški lug" in the municipality of Gornji Vakuf - Uskoplje. Industrial-commercial zone "Batuški lug" extends to 48.1 hectares. In the need to extend the area of the plant, free plots are available and they extend over the area of over 50 hectares. -

Geneva, 6 July 2017 Mr. Bego Gutić Tuzla Canton Prime Minister Bosnia and Herzegovina Sent by email: [email protected] IndustriALL Global Union calls on Tuzla Canton Government to intervene at GIKIL Lukavac and ensure national and international labour standards are upheld Dear Honourable Prime Minister Gutić, I write to you on behalf of IndustriALL Global Union, which represents more than fifty million workers in mining, energy and manufacturing industries in 140 countries worldwide, including in Bosnia and Herzegovina, to call on your administration to intervene at GIKIL, Lukavac, to guarantee the full respect of workers’ rights at the site. Please note that the Independent Trade Union of Chemistry and Non-metal Workers in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina is affiliated to IndustriALL Global Union, and this union represents the GIKIL workers here, via the Samostalni sindikat hemije i nemetala u Federaciji Bosne i Hercegovine. We strongly condemn the mistreatment of the 1,000 workers at the company, which left the workers no other choice but to strike and demonstrate. Non-payment of wages is an unacceptable breach of international workers’ rights, as well as of the national legislation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The union was forced to make an agreement with the employer to simply follow the law and pay wages that were outstanding. The employer did then not respect even this agreement as salaries were again being paid late. The core conventions of the International Labour Organization 87 and 98 have both been ratified by Bosnia and Herzegovina since 1993. These international standards bind your administration to ensure basic trade union rights at GIKIL. -

Growth and Development of Paulownia tomentosa and Paulownia elongata x fortunei in Glasshouse Experiment Veselka Gyuleva, Tatiana Stankova, Miglena Zhyanski, Maria Glushkova and Ekaterina Andonova Forest Research Institute – BAS, blvd. “Kliment Ohridski” 132, Sofia, 1756, Bulgaria Corresponding Author: Veselka Gyuleva, e-mail: [email protected] Received: 20 March 2020 Accepted: 10 May 2020 Abstract The growth potential of Paulownia tomentosa and Paulownia elongata x fortunei, cultivated at three planting densities in a greenhouse was investigated, using conventional field and laboratory methods. Data on the survival percentage, base diameter, total plant height, biomass and leaf area were obtained and analyzed. Differences in growth, productivity, survival and biomass allocation pattern of the tested clones of Paulownia tomentosa and Paulownia elongata x fortunei were found. The results obtained showed that hybrids of Paulownia elongata x fortunei do not exceed the growth performance of the Paulownia tomentosa species for the region of Sofia. Key words: fast-growing forest trees, plant height, base diameter, biomass allocation Introduction Over the last two decades, species and hybrids of genus Paulownia have attracted the attention of many researchers, mainly due to the fact that they are fast-growing and suitable for testing at higher planting densities, at short-rotations, and possess potential for repeatable reproduction. According to the literature (Ericsson and Nilsson, 2006), short-rotation plantations will be increasingly used for biomass production in the future, and species or clones with high repetitive regenerative capacity will be particularly valuable. Moreover, Maier and Vetter (2004) reported that, unlike most fast-growing tree species, Paulownia tomentosa increases its bioproductivity during the second rotation or after the first 4-year cycle. -

Encouraging Democratic Values and Active Citizenship among Youth 2017/18 This project is generously supported by the National Endowment for Democracy and the University of Sarajevo School of Economics and Business. >> PROJECT SUMMARY >> The year-long program seeks to train 15 aspiring young activists, introducing them to democracy and human rights issues, encouraging them to employ critical thinking on sensitive topics and building their communications, presentation, and research skills. The program includes a nine-day education and skills development training with a debate workshop, individual research assignments on democracy-related issues, a group project resulting in four civic campaigns, a three-month period for the promotion of the results of the implemented civic campaigns and a closing ceremony with a final debate tournament. >> Participants The Call for Applications was open from October 16 until November 5, 2017. Besides daily promotion on the Humanity in Action Bosnia and Herzegovina and EDVACAY Facebook pages, the news about the Call for Applications was published on several student and NGO web portals, such as Studomat, Hocu.ba, Mreza Mira, and the Civil Society Promotion Center, as well as on official university websites such as University of Banja Luka Academy of Arts, University of Mostar Faculty of Law, University of Sarajevo Academy of Music, and University of Sarajevo Faculty of Law. The program was extensively promoted at the Eighth University of Sarajevo Scholarship Fair, held at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering on October 19, 2017. The program was also promoted through Humanity in Action Senior Fellow Network, EDVACAY Alumni Network, and other guest promotions at various NGOs in Sarajevo and Banja Luka. -

LEVELS IN SOIL AND WATER WAR WASTE AND POLLUTION OF KARSTIC AREA OF BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA WITH PCBs NENA PICER1, Neven Miošić2, Vedranka Hodak-Kobasić1, Tanja Kovač1, Violeta Čalić1, Hasim Hrvatović2 1Rudjer Boskovic Institute, Zagreb 2Geological survey, Sarajevo Introduction During the recent war, the karst area of Bosnia & Herzegovina has been jeopardized by hazardous waste and deserves particular attention because of its exceptional ecological sensitivity and unfortunately unscrupulous destruction of natural resources, infrastructure, homes and enterprises. This was the reason for creation and planning of a joint three year Project – APOPSBAL, within which scientists from the jeopardized countries (Croatia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, and Serbia and Montenegro) with the help of scientists from other friendly countries (Czech Republic, Austria, Slovenia and Greece) would identify the real problems concerning the PCB and other POPs contamination of the environment1. Objectives of this Project in Bosnia and Herzegovina are: 1) To collect data about damaged facilities with oil with PCBs and also other even more dangereous POPs in Bosnia and Herzegovina. 2) Much better determining the hydrogeological fate of PCBs and other POPs compounds in the most threatened areas of Bosnia and Herzegovina polluted with the POPs. Special emphasis will be paid for the sensitive karstic media of these areas. 3) To recognize in the field directly the technical state of electrotransformers and capacitors with pyralene with special attention to spilling of this oil into the environment. 4) To sample soil and sediments from the sites thought polluted with PCBs and to analyse themselves on its content. 5) To choose several sites for atmospheric monitoring samples with POPs, which are in surroundings to the ground argumentative contaminated with POPs in Bosnia and Herzegovina to establish real data about level of contamination of this very important part of human ecosphere. -

However, it is not known if the pattern in leaf biochemical properties – maximum Rubisco carboxylation (Vcmax) and electron transport (Jmax) – differ between species. This study explored whether a general pattern of changes in Vcmax, Jmax, and a standardized soil moisture response accounted for carbon dioxide exchange of deciduous trees throughout the growing season. † Methods The model MAESTRA was used to examine Vcmax and Jmax of leaves of five deciduous trees, Acer rubrum ‘Summer Red’, Betula nigra, Quercus nuttallii, Quercus phellos and Paulownia elongata, and their response to soil moisture. MAESTRA was parameterized using data from in situ measurements on organs. Linking the changes in biochemical properties of leaves to the whole tree, MAESTRA integrated the general pattern in Vcmax and Jmax from gas exchange parameters of leaves with a standardized soil moisture response to describe carbon dioxide exchange throughout the growing season. -

The history of the Empress tree (Paulownia) in the USA Whitney Adrienne Snow* Department of History, Midwestern State University, Wichita Falls, TX, USA The Paulownia tree first arrived in the USA in the early nineteenth century and quickly transitioned from an exotic oddity to a beloved ornamental by some and a reviled invasive species by others. Many gardeners and horticulturalists praised the tree for its rapid growth and beautiful lavender blossoms. Critics thought the non-native tree a threat to native flora and sought its eradication. One species, Paulownia tomentosa,is invasive and has been especially vilified by organizations ranging from the National Park Service and National Forests Service to the US Department of Agriculture.
