Next Irish Government Must Recognise State of Palestine NUACHTLITIR PHALAISTÍNEACH PALESTINE NEWSLETTER MARCH 2020 NEXT IRISH GOVERNMENT MUST RECOGNISE STATE OFMARY LOU PALESTINE McDONALD Over seventy years ago, hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were driven from their homes and their land. The injustice and tragic consequences of those actions continue to the present day. Thousands of Palestinians have died as a result of the illegal Israeli occupation. Gaza is an open-air prison with an economic blockade, apartheid walls, poor sanitation and worse ventilation. Sadly, in the absence of a genuine, meaningful peace process, the crisis is deepening every day and the new ‘Deal of the Century’ will not solve it. The political and humanitarian crisis in Palestine cannot be resolved by the US and Israeli Governments and without the input of the Palestinians. Just like in Ireland, to be credible and lasting, the peace process can only be achieved through inclusive dialogue with all sides of the conflict. The Palestinian people have been badly let down by the international community over the decades. They have a responsibility to end this crisis and to support the cause of peace and establishment of Palestinian statehood.     Dr Tony Craig March 2013 [email protected] Monitoring the Peace? : Northern Ireland’s 1975 ceasefire incident centres and the politicisation of Sinn Féin. During the Provisional IRA’s (PIRA) 1975 ceasefire, two different sets of incident centres were established across Northern Ireland in order to monitor and avert escalation of violence between Republicans and Security Forces. While one group of these offices were run by the Northern Ireland Office (NIO) and administered by clerks in the Northern Ireland Civil Service, very quickly Sinn Féin (taking advantage of their decriminalisation in 1974) established their own incident centres to coordinate their communication with the government. This article argues that the establishment of the Sinn Féin incident centres set a precedent for the future political activity of the Provisional Republican Movement; that their activity during the 1975 ceasefire played an important formative role in the evolution of the group’s political strategy; and that this experience, acquired from the work done during the 1975 truce, was of far greater influence than is appreciated in current accounts. The period surrounding the PIRA’s 1975 ceasefire has recently become the site of a large amount of new research due in equal measure to the availability of new archive resources1 as well as the rich comparisons that can be drawn between this failed ceasefire and the PIRA’s later attempts in 1994 and 1996.2 The emphasis of the new studies has often been to look in detail at the talks between the British Government

    Sinn Fein in Government Sean McVeigh On 30 November 2011 when tens of thousands of workers went on strike in the North over attacks on pensions and austerity cutbacks in the public sector, the Sinn Fein deputy first minister Martin McGuinness said he supported the strike.McGuinness said: "I understand fully the feelings of public sector workers angry at the imposition of a pension levy by the British government. I support the striking workers in the actions they have taken76." In addition SF issued various statements saying its "elected representatives and activists were out on the picket lines" and Sinn Fein wanted, "a change in the cuts policy being imposed by the British government77." The message Sinn Fein was sending out was that the public sector cuts being imposed in the North have nothing to do with the policies it pursues in the Executive. McGuinness was careful to frame the industrial action as being against a "pension levy by the British government", but the reality is that many thousands of strikers will have understood their action to be against both the government in Westminster and the Executive at Stormont.While McGuinness may attempt to distance himself from the cuts, the Executive - led by SF and the DUP - is implementing a programme of austerity which is deeply damaging to public services and working class communities. One recent example of this type of policy came when SF and other parties in the Assembly brought in a new workfare scheme for the unemployed. It provides free labour for employers and punishment - loss of benefit - for the unemployed who refuse to comply.

    An Interview with Danny Morrison Interviewer: John F. Morrison1 Biography: This interview took place in the home of Danny Morrison, in west Belfast in March 2015. While no longer a prominent figure in Sinn Féin, during the Troubles alongside Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness he was one of the most recognisable faces of the republican leadership of the late 1970s and early 1980s. The former Provisional IRA prisoner was the Director of Publicity for Sinn Féin and was the founding editor of An Phoblacht/Republican News. For many he is best known for promoting the dual paramilitary and political strategy of ‘the armalite and the ballot box.’ 2 Context: In the immediate aftermath of the interview, it was announced by Sinn Féin was going to oppose the passage of the welfare bill in the Northern Assembly.3 While this was a key issue, which almost brought down the Stormont Assembly, the interviewer, and possibly the interviewee, was not aware of it at the time of the interview. Two days prior to the interview, the 2015 Sinn Féin ard fheis (annual conference) had finished in Derry. Throughout the ard fheis, various delegates outlined the party’s plans to mark the centenary of the 1916 Easter Rising. However, while the party was celebrating their past achievements and future plans, they were once again being accused of involvement in criminality.     The Language of Conflict in Northern Ireland: Gerry Adams vs. Ian Paisley by Kim Grego INTRODUCTION The focus of this article1 is the language of conflict in Northern Ireland and, in particular, a comparison between the discourses of two major local politicians: Gerry Adams and Ian Paisley. These names may not be known at world level, as they are linked to a very specific local situation, but anybody with an interest in Northern Ireland’s past, present or future is certain to be familiar with them. Gerry Adams is the President of the extremist Republican party Sinn Féin. Over the years, his name has been widely associated to the Republican terrorist organisation IRA (Moloney 2002); the victims of Republican paramilitary violence between 1969 and 2001 were 2058 (Sutton 2001). Rev. Dr. Ian Paisley founded the extremist Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) in 1971 and led it until his retirement in 2008. Over the years, his name has been associated to 18 different Loyalist paramilitary groups;2 the victims of Loyalist paramilitary violence between 1969 and 2001 were 1018 (ibid.). In November 2003, the DUP and Sinn Féin came in first and second, respectively, in the Northern Ireland Assembly election, thus starting a long period of difficult talks in order to form a joint government between two traditionally enemy — not just opposed — parties. In May 2007, when a second general election confirmed the 2003 results, a government was eventually formed with Ian Paisley as First Minister and Martin McGuinness, then Gerry Adams’ second in command as Sinn Féin’s vice-president, as Deputy First Minister.

    Senate Resolution No. 1679 BY: Senator KENNEDY MOURNING the death of Martin McGuinness, dedicated leader, distinguished citizen and devoted member of his community WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to those who made it their lifelong goal to bring about peace, and served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and the world; and WHEREAS, Martin McGuinness of Derry, Northern Ireland, died on Tuesday, March 21, 2017, at the age of 66; and WHEREAS, Born on May 23, 1950, Martin McGuinness made a name for himself when he joined the Provisional Irish Republican Army in 1970, working his way up to Chief of Staff by 1972; and WHEREAS, Fighting against oppression and working towards the end of British rule in Northern Ireland, Martin McGuinness was actively involved in negotiations and peace talks; while initially believing that British presence in Ireland could only be ended by armed struggle, he later became a passionate believer in compromise, leading the republican movement away from violence; and WHEREAS, Martin McGuinness was one of the main architects of the Good Friday Agreement, also known as the Belfast Agreement; this arrangement formally cemented the Northern Ireland peace process, and contained proposals for a Northern Ireland Assembly with a power-sharing executive, new cross-border institutions with the Republic of Ireland and a body linking devolving assemblies across the United Kingdom with Westminster and Dublin; and WHEREAS, Upon completion of this significant agreement, Martin McGuinness

First as Tragedy… | -By WPRM (Ireland) ‘The key to carrying out a new democratic revolution is the independent role of the proletariat and its ability, through its Marxist-Leninist party, to establish its hegemony in the revolutionary struggle. Experience has shown again and again that even when a section of the national bourgeoisie joins the revolutionary movement, it will not and cannot lead a new democratic revolution, to say nothing of carrying this revolution through to completion. Similarly, history demonstrates the bankruptcy of an “anti- imperialist front” (or similar “revolutionary front”) which is not led by a Marxist-Leninist party, even when such a front or forces within it adopt a “Marxist” (actually pseudo-Marxist) colouration. While such revolutionary formations have led heroic struggles and even delivered powerful blows to the imperialists they have been proven to be ideologically and organisationally incapable of resisting imperialist and bourgeois influences.
