Finally, the board named Jim Murphy, center-linebacker of the AAAA champion Santa Barbara eleven, as the top performer in major CIF ranks this past year. The selection of Murphy marks only the second time in the history of the Helms selections that a lineman has been picked as "player of the year". San Diego High's Charlie Powell, an end, was the board's selection back in 1950. Coach Sam Cathcart, former Long Beach, Santa Barbara College and San Francisco 49ers gridiron performer, calls Murphy the finest football player we've had at Santa Barbara. This, of course, takes in performers like Peter Zucco, "player of the year" in 1940 and Ernie Zámpese, University of Southern California star, who was top CIF player pick in 1953.

THANK YOU FOR ANOTHER OUTSTANDING YEAR! How Many Jersey Numbers of Heisman Trophy Winners Can You Name? By John Shearer About four years ago, I wrote a story about the jersey numbers that the Heisman Trophy winners have worn. I decided to write the article after noticing that 2011 Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III of Baylor wore No. 10, and I began wondering which other Heisman Trophy winners wore that number. That started an online search, and I was able to find everyone’s number, or at least a number the player wore during part of his career. I wrote the story in chronological order by year and mentioned the jersey number with each player, but someone emailed me and said he would like to see a story if I ever listed the Heisman Trophy winners in numerical order. After I thought about it, an article written that way would make for a more The College Football Historian-2 - interesting story.

Winning the Heisman Trophy….Playing for a National Champion By Tex Noel/1st-N-Goal; StatHistorian/SEC SportsFan.com Two of the most asked questions on the minds of college football fans; more so, SEC fans and definitely Florida Gator fans: • Will Florida repeat as the national championship? • And will Tim Tebow become the second player to win the Heisman Trophy, twice! Tune in SEC and football fans… Here is a bit of history on players that have accomplished both. Checking Pre-1950 Heisman Trophy winners that were members of at least 2 AP National Championship teams were: Bruce Smith, {HT: 1941}, Minnesota, 1940-41; Johnny Lujack, {HT: 1947}, Notre Dame, 1943-46-47; Felix “Doc” Blanchard {HT: 1945} and Glenn Davis {HT: 1946}, both Army, 1944-45; Leon Hart, {HT: 1949}, Notre Dame, 1946-47-49. Single National Champions prior to 1950…Davey O’Brien, TCU, HT/NC; {1938/1938} and Les Horvath, {1944/1942} Below is a list of Heisman Trophy winners that were members of a National Champion*, since 1950; but it must be noted, without actual rosters, there is no way to determine if the players were even actually on the team when the school was No. 1! More than likely a player was at least on the squad in years prior to being awarded to “bronze statue.” Players listed in italics won played for a National Champion and won the Heisman Trophy in the same season.
