Skype Translator: Breaking Down Language and Hearing Barriers A Behind the Scenes Look at Near Real-Time Speech Translation William D. Lewis Microsoft Research One Microsoft Way Redmond, WA 98125 [email protected] Abstract In the Skype Translator project, we set ourselves the ambitious goal of enabling successful open-domain conversations between Skype users in different parts of the world, speaking different languages. Build- ing such technology is more than just stitching together the component parts; it also requires work in allowing the parts to talk with one another. In addition to allowing speech communication between us- ers who speak different languages, these technologies also enable Skype communication with another class of users: those who have deafness or hard of hearing. Accommodating these additional users re- quired design changes that benefited all users of Skype Translator. Not only does Skype Translator promise to break down language barriers, it also promises to break down the hearing barrier. 1 Introduction In 1966, Star Trek introduced us to the notion of the Universal Translator. Such a device al- lowed Captain Kirk and his crew to communicate with alien species, such as the Gorn, who did not speak their language, or even converse with species who did not speak at all (e.g., the Com- panion from the episode Metamorphosis). In 1979, Douglas Adams introduced us to the “Babelfish” in the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy which, when inserted into the ear, allowed the main character to do essentially the same thing: communicate with alien species who spoke different languages. Although flawless communication using speech and translation technol- ogy is beyond the current state of the art, major improvements in these technologies over the past decade have brought us many steps closer.

We have tracked the fugitive Ferengi thief Grinj to the icy third planet in the Hovillian system. He has been a thorn in Starfleet’s side for some time, and I look forward to bringing him to justice at last. [SFX door opening] Riker Captain on the bridge! Picard Report please, number one. Riker The planet’s strong magnetic field is scrambling our sensors, but we suspect that he’s encamped in one of the caverns near the planet’s primary settlement. Picard The Hovillians have not yet made first contact. We must ensure that neither we nor Grinj are detected. Data Captain. According to previous research on this civilisation, the Hovillians will be celebrating an annual gift-giving festival tomorrow. I believe it is likely that Grinj intends to disrupt this celebration and steal the inhabitants’ gifts. Picard Agreed. Can our transporters work through the interference? Data Negative. An away team would require a shuttle to reach the surface. Picard Understood. Number One, I want you to find that Ferengi and arrest him before it’s too late. Bring Commander Laforge. Whatever you do, don’t allow yourselves to be spotted by the Hovillians.

I’m sure you have already discovered, as I have, that this event is truly a unique amalgamation of all the things that made Star Trek a phenomenon. My own small contribution to this legendary story has continued to be a source of great pride to me during my career, and although I have been fortunate enough to have many other projects to satisfy the artist in me, I have nevertheless always felt a deep and visceral connection to the show. But there are reasons why this never- ending story has endured. I have always believed that this special connection to Star Trek we all enjoy comes from the positive picture the stories consistently envision.

  • Beyond the Final Frontier: Star Trek, the Borg and the Post-Colonial
Beyond the Final Frontier: Star Trek, the Borg and the Post-colonial Lynette Russell and Nathan Wolski Over the last three decades, Star Trek has become, to use Bernardi's term, a "mega-text" (1998: 11). Star Trek's mega-text consists of much more than the various studio-produced television series and films - it also includes (among other things) novels, Internet chat groups, conventions and fanzines. That Star Trek's premise of space exploration is a thinly disguised metaphor for colonialism has been extensively analysed (see Bernardi, 1998; Hastie, 1996; Ono 1996; Richards, 1997). Boyd describes the utopian future presented in Star Trek the Next Generation (STNG) as based on "nineteenth-century essentialist definitions of human nature, building ... on faith in perfection, progress, social evolution, and free will" (1996: 96-97). Exploration, colonisation and assimilation are never far from the surface of the STNG text. Less apparent, however, are aspects of the series which challenge the hegemonic view of this narrative and which present a post-colonial critique. In this paper we will explore a range of post-colonial moments and an emerging self reflexivity in the second generation series, focusing on those episodes of Star Trek: the Next Generation (STNG) and Star Trek: Voyager which feature an alien race known as the Borg. Others in space Much has been written about the role of the alien in science fiction as a means of exploring issues of otherness. As Wolmark notes: "Science fiction provides a rich source of metaphors for the depiction of otherness and the 'alien' is one of the most familiar: it enables difference to be constructed in terms of binary oppositions which reinforce relations of domination and subordination" (1994: 2).

  • Star Trek (#08) – “World Without End” Bantam Books | February 1979
Star Trek (#08) – “World Without End” Bantam Books | February 1979 Back Cover: Chatalia... a fantastic artificial world, inhabited by furry winged creatures with awesome powers. Here Kirk, Spock and their Enterprise mates, trapped, face terrifying death. And if by some miracle they escape, they will confront the roving killers of the Klingon Empire! Summary: The Enterprise, nearing the end of a benchmark survey of Sector 3, is treated to a rare sight - the occulting of Deneb by Antares. For an instant, red and blue fires of the two brightest stars in the galaxy appear as one. While this event brightened up the crew's morning, the rest of the day had thus far been uneventful; therefore, Kirk joins Spock and Lt. Larousse in the officer's lounge, where they are engaged in a word game - placing the sound "op" in front of each vowel. Lt. Larousse attempts to trip the Vulcan by making him pronounce "uranium hexafluoride" and Spock does so - "Opuropanopiopum hopexopaflopuoporopide" without skipping a beat. Their reverie is interrupted when Uhura's voice pages a yellow alert. On the bridge, a remarkable discovery is made after the ship crosses an extremely strong magnetic field: an unknown space vehicle the size of a large asteroid (some 217 km in diameter). When scans report sentient beings inside, a team of over 20 science and engineering specialists are called to an emergency meeting in the briefing room. Discussing their findings of the new world, it is determined to be a hollow planetoid that spins to create its own artificial gravity, and operates on a Bussard ramscoop drive system.

Click here to go back to the normal view! How Holographic Environments Will Work by Kevin Bonsor If you've ever watched "Star Trek," you may remember seeing the crew of the Starship Enterprise live out their fantasies in a room called the holodeck. The holodeck was a giant, holographic projection room that allowed the crew to touch and interact with projections as if they were in a big video game. Scientists today are developing a new communications technology that will allow you and your friends to interact inside a simulated environment even if you are thousands of miles apart. Tele-immersion will allow us to manipulate holographic projections as if they were real objects. Most of the basic components for this network are already in place to allow the development of tele-immersion. Tele-immersion is the scientific community's answer to the holodeck. By combining cameras and Internet telephony, videoconferencing has allowed the real-time exchange of more information than ever without physically bringing each person into one central room. Tele-immersion takes videoconferencing to the next level. It will create a central, simulated environment that will allow everyone to come together in one virtual room, and no one will have to leave their physical location to do so. In this edition of How Stuff Will Work, you'll find out how employees in Los Angeles, New York, Tokyo and Paris will soon meet in a tele-immersive environment and shake hands with holographic images of their co-workers.

This work is licensed to the public under the Creative Commons Attribution License. Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations: Portraits of Individuals With Disabilities in Star Trek Terry L. Shepherd Abstract Weekly television series have more influence on American society than any other form of media, and with many of these series available on DVDs, television series are readily ac- cessible to most consumers. Studying television series provides a unique perspective on society’s view of individuals with disabilities and influences how teachers and peers view students with disabilities. Special education teachers can use select episodes to differenti- ate between the fact and fiction of portrayed individuals with disabilities with their stu- dents, and discuss acceptance of peers with disabilities. With its philosophy of infinite diversity in infinite combinations, Star Trek has portrayed a number of persons with dis- abilities over the last forty years. Examples of select episodes and implications for special education teachers for using Star Trek for instructional purposes through guided viewing are discussed. • Lingua Ex Machina: Computer-Mediated Communication and the Tower of Babel
Copyright © 1999 The Johns Hopkins University Press and the Society for Literature and Science. All rights reserved. Configurations 7.1 (1999) 61-89 Lingua ex Machina: Computer-Mediated Communication and the Tower of Babel David J. Gunkel We've finally reversed the damage done by the Tower of Babel, and God, no doubt, is wondering what we're going to do for an encore. 1 The "Tower of Babel" (Genesis 11:1-9) provides an account of the plurality of languages as having issued from an original and apparently universal tongue. The first line of the fable reads: "And all the earth was one lip and there was one language to all." This mythic loss of an original universality and the subsequent attempts to reestablish it by overcoming the confusio linguarum already constitute a kind of universal idiom: "The story of the confusion of tongues, and of the attempt to redeem its loss through the rediscovery or invention of a language common to all humanity, can be found in every culture." 2 The computer and the technologies of computer-mediated communication manifest the most recent version of this supposedly universal endeavor. According to numerous popular and technical discourses, the computer promises to supply a technological solution to the linguistic cacophony that has been the legacy of Babel. In this manner, computer technology participates in an old and apparently universal obsession, one that situates universality as both its origin and its purpose. [End Page 61] In this paper I will undertake an examination of the Babelian information that currently circulates through cyberculture and determines the general significance of networked computer systems.
