Bettye Lavette Afrakà 11 Luglio 2008 the Platters BETTYE LAVETTE AFRAKÀ 11 LUGLIO 2008 Bettye LaVette (suo vero nome Betty Haskin nata a Muskegon nel Michigan, U.S.A), è una delle migliori vocalist di blues e soul viventi, da molti esperti consacrata dopo l’uscita del suo album “I’ve Got My Own Hell to Raise“ del 2005, come “La Signora” della blackmusic scavalcando le altre regine precedenti. La sua carriera nasce con il primo hit "My Man, He's a Lovin Man" del 1962 (cantato da una Bettye sedicenne) e la striscia di successi che l'hanno seguito ("Let Me Down Easy", "Only Your Love Can Save Me", "He Made a Woman Out of Me") hanno fatto della Lavette quello che si dice un "perennial cult favourite" del circuito Nothern Soul in Inghilterra, anche per il fatto di aver inciso sia per la Atlantic che per la Motown incarnando una sorta di mediazione tra queste due scuole di pensiero della black music. L'ultimo "A Woman Like Me" si è guadagnato quattro stelle sulle selettive valutazioni di Music Guide con annessa recensione entusiasta. Il disco è prodotto da Dennis Walker, il songwriter e produttore che sta dietro il successo di Robert Cray. Bettye Lavette si è aggiudicata il premio “Best Come Back Blues Artist Award 2004” per l’album “A Woman Like Me”.A selezionarla è stata la Blues Foundation che elargisce onorificenze agli artisti e musicisti blues attraverso gli annuali Memphis WC Handy Blues Awards – i più importanti riconoscimenti per gli artisti e musicisti blues nell’industria della musica. Battye è stata anche nominata in tre altre categorie – Soul Blues Female Artists of the Year – Soul Blues Album of the Year – e Traditional Blues Female Artists of the Year. THE PLATTERS AFRAKÀ 11 LUGLIO 2008 The Platters Nati nel 1953 a Los Angeles, i Platters si caratterizzano per quella particolare tecnica vocale conosciuta come doo-wop, che consiste nel rinforzare il canto solista con armonie vocali sincopate e cori utilizzati più come strumenti d'accompagnamento che come voci vere e proprie. Il primo grande successo arriva nel 1955 con un brano intitolato Only you, riarrangiato dal maestro Ernie Freeman, che suscita l'interesse degli ascoltatori con la scalata alle classifiche nazionali ed internazionali. Successo determinato da una serie di novità che caratterizzano il gruppo: in primo luogo la voce solista, elegante e impostata, di Tony Williams (morto nel ’92), proveniente dalla tradizione gospel, che utilizza per la prima volta il famoso "singhiozzo" per spezzettare le note; la presenza di un elemento femminile nel gruppo (la giovanissima Zola Taylor deceduta il 3 maggio 2007), che rende unici gli impasti vocali. Dopo Only You, il successo si ripete con My prayer, cover di un brano francese del 1939 (Avant de mourir), The great pretender e You'll never never know, tutte arrangiate con il famoso terzinato che inflazionerà la musica popolare per circa un decennio. Il gruppo scriverà un importante capitolo della storia della musica attraverso un genere molto innovativo per l'epoca vendendo ben 53 milioni di dischi, con successi planetari quali Smoke gets in your eyes, Twilight time, Harbor lights, ma subisce una prima battuta d'arresto quando, nel 1960, quando il solista Tony Williams decide di mettersi in proprio. Di qui una serie di rimaneggiamenti nella formazione e l'utilizzo del nome "The Platters" da parte di ciascun componente che decideva di formare un proprio gruppo. In Europa da circa 20 anni sopravvive egregiamente la nuova formazione dei Platters che annovera: Freche Thompson (lead vocal), Kim Rhone, Orlando Johnson e James Sampson. Il loro spettacolo live, con pubblicazione del CD antologico omonimo è intitolato: Mllennium Tour. .

    "Disco Madness: Walter Gibbons and the Legacy of Turntablism and Remixology" Tim Lawrence Journal of Popular Music Studies, 20, 3, 2008, 276-329 This story begins with a skinny white DJ mixing between the breaks of obscure Motown records with the ambidextrous intensity of an octopus on speed. It closes with the same man, debilitated and virtually blind, fumbling for gospel records as he spins up eternal hope in a fading dusk. In between Walter Gibbons worked as a cutting-edge discotheque DJ and remixer who, thanks to his pioneering reel-to-reel edits and contribution to the development of the twelve-inch single, revealed the immanent synergy that ran between the dance floor, the DJ booth and the recording studio. Gibbons started to mix between the breaks of disco and funk records around the same time DJ Kool Herc began to test the technique in the Bronx, and the disco spinner was as technically precise as Grandmaster Flash, even if the spinners directed their deft handiwork to differing ends. It would make sense, then, for Gibbons to be considered alongside these and other towering figures in the pantheon of turntablism, but he died in virtual anonymity in 1994, and his groundbreaking contribution to the intersecting arts of DJing and remixology has yet to register beyond disco aficionados.1 There is nothing mysterious about Gibbons's low profile. First, he operated in a culture that has been ridiculed and reviled since the "disco sucks" backlash peaked with the symbolic detonation of 40,000 disco records in the summer of 1979.

    DISCO AS OPERATING SYSTEM, PART ONE Tan Lin When exactly did the era of the medium dissolve? Like most cultural phe- nomena, the dissolution of the medium and its attendant auras—painting, fi lm, music, photography, the novel—is hard to pinpoint. So it’s useful to turn from the PowerPoint lectures of art history, with their virtual-poetic implications, and look for sensory clues on the dance fl oor of the seventies, regarded as an operating system with a mirror ball, two turntables, Quaaludes, and a mixing board. The ad-hoc setup known as “seventies dance culture” or the “Disco Era”—beginning roughly in 1973 and ending in 1979—ushered in a post-medium era for the masses. In disco’s particular case, it led to a host of media formats and musics in the eighties and beyond: house, ambient, electronica, hip-hop, snap, trip-hop, dub, crunk, garage, hyphy, and techno. These mutations suggest how varied and unspecifi c dis- co as a genre became and how complicated its evolution and mainstreaming ultimately was. But then genre or medium was never the right way to think about disco. Asking what disco is is no less diffi cult than asking, What is music? But the question might be better rendered as, What sounds like music in an age of the dissolving medium? And one of the answers to this is “disco,” or, to use a more ambient search parameter, “the disco sound.” The post-medium era had numerous precursors both visual and aural.1 In his notes to the 1914 Box, Marcel Duchamp proposed bypassing the outmoded channel of retinal processing by making a “painting of frequency,”2 a project followed up by Duchamp’s program for “large sculptures in which the listener would be at the center.

The band recorded the album with Henry (Solomon Burke, Bettye Lavette, Rodney Crowell and Emmylou Harris, Carolina Chocolate Drops) in Los Angeles at Henry’s own Garfield House studio. The result is an elemental, spiritual type of rock-n-roll. The album features 11 tracks written and performed by Allison Russell and JT Nero. Nero is the group’s chief songwriter, with Russell taking most of the vocal turns. People often compare your brand of rock and roll – and rock and roll poetry – to gospel. I have heard your music actually described as “secular gospel.” What does that mean to you? JT Nero: Our music is very elemental – sun, wind, rain, bitter tears, love, joy. We write it to “save” ourselves and don’t shrink from the idea that it can “save” other people…though we don’t mean that in a religious sense. We are a band full of severely lapsed Lutherans, accidental Buddhists, vaguely hopeful whatevers. I just believe – on a gut level – that words and music together heal and transform like nothing else in this life. But not just any words… JT: Well what rock and roll poetry means to me, as opposed to any other kind of writing, is that it’s for the people. We are writing songs for everybody to sing – and I don’t mean dumbed down, I just mean elemental and universal…streamlined.

She found her way into it from another direction. “I made it a man-woman relationship,” she says. “I made the guy the cloth, I made the loom my past, I made the ‘feather in the wind’ the bitch,” she laughs. “It made a story in my head.” Similarly, LaVette learned that Pink Floyd’s “Wish You Were Here” had been written for onetime Floyd frontman Syd Barrett. “But I was singing it for David Ruffi n and Marvin Gaye, and all my friends from then who stuck with me so long and had such good thoughts for me,” she says. “I wish they could see this.” “This” is one of the most satisfying comebacks in the history of pop. After she fi rst made her name in the early 1960s, “the sugar turned to shit,” as she puts it. LaVette bounced among labels through the ’60s and ’70s.
