Methods

All measurementsof morphologicalcharacten were madefrom dried specimens.Only the larger leavesand stamensoneach specimenwere measured. Wherepossible, anther colour ilnd seedcharacters have beenadded to the descriptionsofeach taxon, but thesecharacters should be treatedwith caution asthere irreoften few specimenswith matureseeds and anthercolour is sometimesbased on very few records. Conservationstatus has only been included fbr taxa warranting inclusion as Dcclared Rare or Priodty Flora or known from few localitics. All othertaxa are known trom at leastl5 localities, usually includingnature reserves, and do notappear to beat dsk atpresent. An explanationofthe conservation codesapplied to the Western Australian flora is given at the cnd 01'cachNrJ)l,ri.l issue.

A few PERTH specimenswere selectedfor citation under each taxon. Thesc arc mainly recent collcctions, mostly from ncw localitics,or oldcrspccimcns that have only recentlybeen incorporated or reidentilied. Distribution mapshave beenupdated, with eachsymbol rcprescntingthc occurcnce of thc taxonin a quartcrdcgrcc latitudc by a quartcrdcgrcc longitude area.

KeY to sPeciesand subspecies

Drawing up a reliable key for this speciesgroup is difficult becauseof the great valiability of the more useful characterswithin someofthe taxa. There may be occasionalatypical specimenswhich will not key successfullyon all charactersfor a pafticular lead

Excluding the newly discovered neokyrea, all species belonging to Pimelea secl. Heterolaenaare keyed undercouplets 11-26 in Rye (1988: 144-145). Couplet 12 of this key is misleading,as Pimelea brevistyla is inconectly keyed under the secondaltemative and three of the "flat specieskeyed only under the first alternativeof having leaf margins to inculved" actually have rectrrvedleafmargins, althoughnot asprominently recurvedas most of the taxa keyed only undel the "recurved secondalternative ofleafmargins to revolute". The new key given below overcomesthis shortcomingand other more minor inaccuraciesin the previouskey, and also differs tiom the earlier key in its inclusion of infraspecific taxa. l. Fromthe few matureseeds thathave been exarnined in thisspe c\es, P. breyistylqappears to be similar to Pimeleaspectabilis in having a relativety thick and shiny brown exocarp. Most membersof sect. Heterolaenahaveavery thin membranous exocarp, which is sometimesimpressed onto the mesocalp.

Previouslythe known rangesof the two subspeciesofP. brev,sry/4wele separatedby a failly large disjunction(see Rye 198?:Figure 58). A recentcollection from aboutmidway acloss the disjunction (J.R.Wheeler 2316) has briclged the gapin distribution, but not in morphology, between the two subspecies.

Breedingsystem. Female specimens examined: A.R. Annels 4014,R Helms ll Sep.1897and' M. Koch 2455 (also a bisexual specimen on same sheet). A few specimens(e.g. J. Seabrook 182), have inflorescenceswith someof the outermostflowers female and the rest bisexual.

Notsx. This subspeciesis much more widespreadand variable than the other subspecics. Most specimensfrom near Perth and northwards have flowers white at maturity, but white-flowered specimensbecome gradually less common and pale pink-flowered ones more common towards the south and eastof the subspecies'range, with all specimensfrom the far south-eastapparently having palepinkflowers. Thereis alsoa tendencyfor specimensin the southelnpart ofthe rangeto difTerfrom thosein the northernpart of the rangein having shorterand more clliptic leaves, and longer hairs on theswollen base ofthe floraltube. Someofthespecimens occurring furthestinland have the smallest {lowers found in ihis subspecies.

Throughoutthe subspecies'distribution some specimens have 1ew or no minutehairs occurring in thecentfal part ofthe bandoflong hairson thetloral tube, although most specimens do haveminute hairs throughout the band.

A specimenfrom SampsonsBrook (G.F. Berthoud 25 Oct. 1902)has particularly large leavesand flowers, the largestleaf 7 mm wide and the largestflowem with the slenderportion of the floral tube 9 mm long.

Breedingsystem. Some specimens (e. g. D. Edingerl5S andE.D. Kabay 604),haveinflorescences with the outermostflowers female and the rest bis€xual.

Nores. This attractive speciesis one of the most common Pimelea speciesin cultivation, favoured becauseof its dense domed growth habit, with very close patent leaves in an obvious opposite- decussatearrangement, and prolific pink flowers. It can generallybe distinguishedfrom other species by its distinctive growth form but occasionallyin the wild producesmore stragglygrowth with longer intemodesand with the leavesoften antrorse. The normal domed habit is evidently well suitedto its coastalhabitat in low windswept shrublands.

As listed amongthe doubtful namesin Rye ( 1990:209), threevarieties based on cultivatedmaterial havebeen named under the illegitimate synorrymPimelea decassala. These varieties are probably all vadants of P. ferruginea but there is insufficient information to be certain. The specieshas a considerablerange around the coast, with specimensfrom the south-westcorner and south coast tendingtohave leaveseither longer or broaderthan thosefromthe westcoast, and with specimensfrom the far south-westnear Augusta tending to havethe longeststamens. Specimens from both endsof the rangenearly always haveboth pairs ofbracts ciliate whereasthose from someother partsof the range fairly often have the outer pair or both pairs glabrous. .d repuelsaJou aqu lurog eq1Sur,reqrlalrl dJo sJe,^doua[ssrcsurncJlc eq1,{q osle pue,Dprdstq ur 'slJEJq tou tnq DJouol d ur JepJoq,,rro11a,{ lcurlsrp z e,t€q qcrq^t eql ,{q peqsrnSuqstp,{[peer aq uec exBlo,rl sql sreqlusrauoqs qtr,r sre,r,rogre8rul a,ruq ot spuelpue .Jeru?aeuq Suue^\ou uleu slr qlr,$ 'Dtouol 'd eNlElertsesolcslr ueql poued Suue^\ogelq€rlu,r ssal u elsq ol stueesppr dstq Dalautd .saoN

Distributionand habtdt Distributedin theSouth West Botanical Province, extending along the west coastfrom TamalaStation south to Nine Mile Lake NatureReserve (south-west of Pinjarra)and extendinginland to ThreeSprings and near New Norcia. Occurs in deepsand or in sandover rock, the rockusually sandstone orlimestone but sometimes laterite. Recorded in Janah( Eucalyptusmarginata) andlorBanksia woodlands in the southempan of its range;further north recorded in Eucalyptus todti.anawoodlards or in vegetationdominated by othereucalypts or vadoustall shrubor smalltree species.(Figure 48)

Phenology.Flowers: August to earlyNovember. Fruits: September to November.Mature seeds were observedon J.S.Beard 6882 andW.E. Blackall2TT 5 '

Breedingsystem. Some specimens (e.g. E.A. Grffin 3374),have inflorescences with theoutermost flowersfemale and the rest bisexual or produceoccasional female inflorescences as well asbisexual inflorescences, while G.J.Keighery 13693 appears to be almostentirely female.

Notes. Recentcollections have extended the known rangeof the speciesboth northwardsand southwards. One ofthe specimens cited h erc(P. Bridgereater Nov. 1979)was previously misidentified asP. roseq, with whichit overlapsin rangeon the coastalplain betweenLake Pinjar and Pinjana. Etymology. From theGreek words reos-recentandfyreo-lightupon, referringtotherecentdiscovery thatthis taxon was a distinct species.A singlespecimen ( G.J.Keighery 6336) was availableat the time the was revised in Westem Australia (Rye 1988) and this was incorrectly placed under P, avonensis,

Noles. Closely relatedto Pimeleaciliata a]ILdP. rosea, beingsomewhat intermediate in morphology, forexamplein having stamensshorter than the sepals as in P, roseabut with a longerfilamentand shorter anthermore akin to the sizesfound in P. cilial4. Its distdbution of long hairs on the floral tube is also intermediat€but closer to that of P. ciliata. P. neokyrea is alsod:rstinguished from P. rosea by its inland rather than coastaldistribution and its white or yellowish rather than pink flowers. According to the label on E "/. Crodord3670 ttisspecimenof Pimeleaneokyreahasyellow flowers, but it is only in bud so the open flowers may still be white.

ln P. ciliota therearc two or occasionallythree pairsof ciliate bractswhereas the new specieshas at most one pair of ciliate bracts, and the outer bractsof P, neoleyrea are longer and nanower than the secondpair of bracts in P, ciliata, In the areawhere the two speciesoverlap in range,P' neokyreacan also be distinguished from P. ciliata by its longel leavesand white or yellowish flowers, but these differencesare not reliable elsewhere.

Illustrations. Rye (1984: Figure 4). A close-upphotograph of the inflorescenceis reproducedin Hopper et aL.(1990: 93).

Shrab commonly 0.2-0.35 mhigh, with decumbentstems often longerthanthis; stemswith axillaly hairs absentor few and inconspicuousin lower axils. Leaf blades |sually narrowly obovate, 15-37 x 4-8 mm; margins recurved;apex usually obtusewith a short thick mucro. Inflorescenceercctbut often at an angle to an almost horizontal stem. Involucral bractu ovate or broadly ovate, usually the samecolour as the leaves;outer bractsglabrousi inner bracts 11- 17 mm long, ciliate at leastat centre ofeach margin, sometimessparsely hairy towardsbase inside. Flowers white, sometimeswith a ring of short hairs inside at the throat, persistentin fruit; swollen baseof floral tube densely covered by retorse to reflexedhairs mostly 0.3-0.5 mrn long; slenderpoltion offloral tube 3.5-7 mm long, usually with retrorseto reflexed hairson basalpart, with widely antrorseto patenthails L3-3 mm long, often mixed with much shorter relexed to patenthairs, on centlal portion or Ieaching either to the baseor to the summit, sometimeswith somewhatsmallel and more anhorsehails towards summit, S/aaers much longer than sepals;filament4-6 mm long; antherorange,0.9-1.4 mm long. Seedalmost ovoid, 2.6-3.3 x 1.5-1.6 mm, whitish to golden brown over shiny black. Summer Pimelea

Phenology.Flowers:mainly SeptembertoDecember, probably also August. Fruits: mainly September to January. Mature seedswere examinedon M Casson,P. Ellery & C. McChesneySC7 0.2 & SC70.4, D.B. Foreman1494,C.A.Gardner 13666andT.A. H alliday 283. This speciesappears to produceviable seedsfar more regularly than its close relative P. lehmanniana.

Breeding system, Female specimenexamined A.R. Annels 2768.

Notes. Distinguishedliom its closestrel ative,PimeLeq lehmanniana, as rrrdicatedirl thekey. Pimelea spectabilis aan$rally atsobe readily distinguishedby having minute hairs intermixed with the long hairs of the floral tube and tends to have larger flowers and more densely hairy sepals than P. lehmanniana.

There are severalgeographical trends in morphological variation in this species Specimensfrom the northem areafrom Mundaring to DryandraState Forest tend to havethe inflorescencesmore erect, sepalsrelatively denselyhairy inside and relatively shon hairs on the lloral tube when comparedwith specimensfrom the south coast. Specimensfrom the Margaret River areaare usually similar to the northem specimensin mostcharactersbut tend to haverelatively few minute hairs intermixed with the long hairs of the floral tube, the minute hairs being presentin the upper part but otien absentin the 'belt' middle or lower part of the long hair on the slenderpart of the lloral tube. Specimensfrom the easternarea in Fitzgerald River National Park have relatively short leavesand short antherson long filamentscompared with specimensfrom other areas;they havependulous inllorescences and tend to havepale yellow flowers, with thesepals sometimes almost glabrous inside. In otherareas the flowers are white and sometimespink-tinged.

Discussion

Pimelea isci.tnentlydivided into four largesections, sect. Pln elea, secl. Calyptrostegla (C A. Mey.) Benth.,sect. Epallage (Endl.) Benth. and sect.Heterolaena, and alsoseveral small sections. Of the largesections, llelc rolae na is theleast v ariable and most restricted, occurring only in temperatesouth- westofAustralia. Eachofthe other threelarge sections extends across Australia, occurring in arid and temperateareas as well as alpine and/or tropical areas.Although smaller thun these three scctions overall,HeterolaenQ is a prominentgroup in south-westemAustralia, where it accountsfbr a third of the Pimelea specles.

Sect,Ileterolaena appearsto be closestto sect.Calyptrostegi4 but somecharacters prescnt in all or most members of sect.Heteroktena (lack of circumscission, glabrous and recurved leaf margins) suggesta relationship with sect. Pimelea, in which these charactersare commonly or occasionallypresent. The boundariesof all sectionsneed to be reassessed, particularly with regardto theplacementoftheNewZealand species, which arenow beingstudied by Colin Burrows (pers.comm ) at fie Unive$ity of Canterbury,Christchurch, New Zeaiand. Further study could possibly result in sect. Heterolaena being combined wilh sect. Calyptrostegia. However sect. trleterolaen.t rs a convenientgrouping of very similar species, all ofwhich appearto havetheir closestrelatives within the group.

When first describedby Endlicher( 1837),Il eterolaena rN as an infi'agenericcategoly of unspeciiied rank. Recentpublications have disagreedas to the autho$hip of the recombination to the rank of sectionas listed below.
