ighlights of the Italian American experience were on the menu at Local 237’s Italian Heritage Celebration, HOct. 22, at Union Hall. In addition to great music, food, and camaraderie, honorees expressed great pride in their ancestors’ contributions to the New World and the Old. President Gregory Floyd presented awards to four deserving members and a Lifetime Achievement Award to Ralph Prossimo, a former Local 237 trustee and legislative director. Floyd also presented Golden Teamsters Awards to State Sen. Diane Savino and Lou DiBella, boxing promoter, film pro - ducer and head of DiBella Entertainment. Addressing the guests, DiBella, who played himself in the last “Rocky” film, said, “This means so much to me.” He added that his grandfather, an Italian immigrant, was an Ralph Prossimo, retired trustee and legislative director for Local 237, poses with his opera singer and a union activist, who helped organize the famiglia following acceptance of a Lifetime Achievement Award. Kenneth Quarles Packs It In After 20 Years Islip white collar member Kenneth Quarles, formerly a drug abuse educator and prevention specialist for the Town of Islip Access Program, retired recently with 20 years of service. Quarles was a recipient of the coveted President’s Award at Local 237’s 2010 Black History Event. His career was one of dedication to young people and adults at high risk. Prior to becoming a member, he worked with youths in a federal cor - rections facility and taught art in the Smithtown Central School District. His humanism extends to commitments outside of work. Quarles has served as president of the Suffolk County Perinatal Coalition. Under his leadership, the coalition obtained a million dollar grant to ensure that ba - bies born in Suffolk County had the optimal chance for survival.
