Oxfordshire County Council Election DAVE BOWEN Goring Division (, Goring Heath, Goring-on-Thames, , , South Stoke, , Whitchurch, )

I am 46 and have lived in Whitchurch-on-Thames with my wife, Hayley, for the past 9 years. For 17 years I have worked for London Underground as a tube train driver. I am a Parish Councillor in Whitchurch and I am now in my final year completing a Law Degree. I believe this will contribute to my effectiveness as a local councillor.

I am also an ASLEF trade union representative helping members with employment and conditions of service issues. Working in the transport sector, I see every day the damage that underfunding and privatization have had. As a parish councillor, I fought hard to save our local bus service that would have stopped running when the County Council cut the bus subsidy.

With local government already cut to the bone by the Tory government, funding across the County has left every public service struggling to survive and there is more in the pipeline. It is the most vulnerable in society that rely on public services and suffer most. In my work as a Parish Councillor, I see at first hand the damage that is being inflicted on local communities by this heartless Tory administration.

I would ask you to vote for me on May 4th so I can fight further cuts and protect our threatened public services.

VOTE LABOUR in GORING VOTE for DAVE BOWEN on THURSDAY 4 MAY Threats and Challenges These are common right across this Division. I will use my experience and TOGETHER WE CAN TACKLE THEM. Education The controversial Tory school funding formula means huge cuts to every school in the area. Langtree School is set to lose £326,245 – this equates to £549 per pupil. That pupil could be your child. In real terms this could result in the loss of 8 teachers. Those teachers could be teaching your child now. When they are gone, the size of classes will expand and entire subjects could disappear. Schools will be stripped back to a basic entitlement. How much extra cost are you contributing to your child’s education now?

School Funding cut Per pupil cut Potential Loss of teachers Langtree School £326,245 £549 8 Chiltern Edge Community School £181,636 £351 4 Kidmore End Primary School £63,411 £305 1 Whitchurch Primary School £55,239 £416 1 Stoke Row Primary School £47,031 £516 1 Goring Primary School £43,743 £188 1 Woodcote Primary School £39,272 £209 1 South Stoke Primary School £30,121 £641 1 Checkendon Primary School £22,522 £243 1 Health and Social Care Adult social care is in crisis due to underfunding, work force shortages, bed losses in the acute sector and the private sector’s unwillingness to pay adequate wages. Elderly care is something we will all require. At the other end of the spectrum, Children’s Centres with their outreach work, and Youth Services – are either cut or downgraded. I will fight vigorously for vital public services and support the County Labour Group in bringing Care Work back in-house. Highways Potholes are a major road safety issue and increasingly preoccupying motorists who suffer damaged tyres as well. This failure is yet another example of Tory mismanagement, adding to future costs. Community ideas for improving road safety and traffic issues can be resolved with facilitating funds. I will work with residents to tackle these problems. Transport Bus subsidies have been wiped out across the County leading to the withdrawal of some services. I will seek to reverse this by looking at viable alternatives. I am working with a Community Interest Company working on a not-for profit basis to introduce a new route to help resolve this deficiency. “As a Parish Councillor, I have We want to hear from you worked hard to get the very best for my parish. As your County Councillor, I will strive to listen and 07531 600888 represent your interests and views [email protected] fairly. Together we can build a community where everyone can [email protected] flourish. I would welcome this opportunity to serve you.
