This thesis begins with the ancient karakia incantation recited by Rākaihutū, the famous Waitaha tupuna who cleared the passage ways through the great Pacific oceans to Aotearoa (Beattie, 1918, p. 146) 2 KĀ PĀKITUA Kā Pākitua is the name on the prow of the Te Uruao Kapuaraki waka canoe and also the toki adze that Rākaihautū raised as he chanted the karakia above.

Sweet Charity really is an act of love. Legendary Italian film-maker Federico Fellini created the filmNights of Cabiria for his wife Giulietta Masina. The famous American choreographer Bob Fosse then turned it into a Broadway musical for his wife Gwen Verdon. Perhaps best known from the iconic 1966 film starring Shirley McLaine, Sweet Charity is a feel-good dance musical in the best sense. I love Jackie Clarke’s work and have been looking for something to showcase her talents for some time. The New Zealand Post Season of Sweet Charity is the perfect vehicle for her great voice, her playfulness, her mimicry, her extraordinary understanding of musical styles and her irrepressible energy. I’m also privileged to work with two of New Zealand’s finest and most committed artists, choreographer Shona McCullagh, and musical director/arranger (and composer in his own right), John Gibson.

Highlights We committed production funding to nine new feature films (including two documentaries) and also supported the completion of seven low-budget independent digital features. We provided strategic, logistic and financial support in the form of prints and advertising grants for six new NZFC-financed features released in New Zealand cinemas during the year. NZFC-financed shorts achieved success at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2011. Blue won the Cannes Critics’ Week prize for Best Short and Meathead was one of nine films selected for the Main Competition. The 61st Berlin International Film Festival awarded the Crystal Bear to short film Manurewa. Written and directed by Sam Peacocke, the film screened in the Generation 14plus Youth Section of the competition. Boy continued its success in New Zealand cinemas during 2010/11, finally completing its theatrical run with a record-breaking NZ box office total of $9.3M.

It also supported the completion of 16 digital features. The NZFC provided strategic, logistical and financial support in the form of prints and advertising grants for seven new NZ features released in New Zealand cinemas during the year. Taika Waititi’s Contents feature filmBoy premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. It was awarded the Grand Prix award in the Generation Section of the Berlin Film Festival in February 2010 and went on to become the highest grossing NZ film of all time with a box office of more than $9 million. Gaylene Preston’s filmHome By Christmas enjoyed a highly successful cinematic release reaching $1.15 million box office. The film was nominated for 10 Qantas Film Awards. Independently financed feature documentaryThis Way of Life, directed by Tom Burstyn and produced by Sumner Burstyn, received a Special Mention in the Generation Section at the Berlin Film Festival.

To support the strategy, new funding opportunities and support for Māori filmmakers were also announced. • Karen Waaka-Tibble became the NZFC’s inaugural Pou Whakahare, a role established to assist in implementing Te Rautaki Māori. • The 125 Fund, a feature film fund for projects where at least two of the key creatives, including the director, are women was launched, and opened for applications in June. • Eleven feature films (including four documentaries) with NZFC production financing were released theatrically in New Zealand in the period. The title which generated the highest box office wasThe Breaker Upperers with a gross of $1,762,706 (to 30 June 2018). • The New Zealand Screen Production Grant (NZSPG) International attracted New Zealand Qualifying Production Expenditure (NZQPE) totalling $693,892,538 in the period, which triggered grant payments of $149,265,574. • 42 final NZSPG certificates were issued, 13 to New Zealand productions and 29 to international productions.
