Ellen was the youngest child of Richard and Ann Hindley. BGGGGBBG She was born on 18th August 1843 at Seven Oaks, near Antrobus, and she was baptised at Stretton Church on 19th September 1843. Her father was listed as a shoemaker. (See the Stretton Church entry below).

1842-1845 Great Budworth Births at Registry Office. (p. 44)

I conducted a search at Warrington Registry Office in 1994. I found an Ellen Eliza Hindley in the Great Budworth Births for the period 1842-1845.

In the National Births Index for 1843(Q3) there is an Ellen Eliza Hindley registered at , Cheshire but no father or mother is recorded.

I am not sure that our Ellen is also the same as Ellen Eliza.

In the 1851 Census Ellen is aged 8 years old and living with her parents at Pepper Street, Appleton. Her brother, Thomas, is the only other child in the same household but he is not in the next census as he died in 1859, aged 19 years. Thomas was buried at Great Budworth on 19th September 1859.

1860 Marriage. Ellen Hindley married Samuel Beswick on 20th August 1860 at Farnworth, near . (This marriage information was given to me in 1994 by a male descendant). I eventually found the marriage in the National Marriages Index, registered at Prescot, Lancashire, in 1860 (Q3). The individual references for both Ellen and Samuel were (8b 840). ELLEN HINDLEY (1843-1871+) 1843ELLE/2

Samuel Beswick was baptised at Great Budworth Church on 9th June 1839. His parents, Samuel and Mary, were from Antrobus.

1860 Birth. Three months after the marriage Ellen gave birth to her first child, Ann.

1861 census – No sign of Ellen or Samuel.

1881 census and beyond – No sign of Ellen or Samuel, not even their deaths.

However, there is a Warrington registered death for an Ellen Beswick in 1879(Q4), aged 37years. Ellen would actually have been 36 years old in the last quarter of 1879.

It is likely that both Ellen and Samuel died at quite a young age. ELLEN HINDLEY (1843-1871+) 1843ELLE/3

The following details of the family also come from information given to me in 1994 by a male descendant of the Scott line.

Samuel and Ellen had four daughters;

Ann born on 28th October 1860 at Runcorn. Ann Beswick (1860-1911) married th Peter Scott (1856-1938) on 24 December 1880.

Mary (Polly) who was born in 1865.

Ellen born in 1867. Ellen was christened at Antrobus. At one time it is believed that all Ellen’s children were “housed” at the Dutton Workhouse. By March 2013 the only Cheshire Workhouse records on the Internet were those from .

Emma born in 1869. At 13 years of age Ellen was working in Great Budworth as a servant. Did she drown in a canal?

I have confirmed the years of birth of the four daughters by checking through the Index of National Births.

Ann’s birth was registered at Runcorn in 1860(Q4). Mary’s birth was registered at Runcorn in 1865(Q2). Margaret Ellen’s birth was registered at Runcorn in 1867(Q2). Emma’s birth was registered at Runcorn in 1869(Q2).

In the National Marriages Registers for , Annie Beswick married Peter Scott in 1880(Q4).

Scott family descendants appear in the 1881, 1891, 1901 and 1911 Censuses.
