Included is an examination of literature and creative work focused on the Golden Age of Hip-Hop that explores early sampling processes and techniques. Through original compositions and an exegesis, the study provides unique and significant contributions to the field including the identification of four approaches to the design and construction of sample-based composition and associated techniques for achieving them using contemporary music technologies. The Golden Age of Hip-Hop is presented as a historical period of musical significance, not only for defining new genres and sub genres of music, but because of the influencing factors that emerging technologies had on new compositional processes and outcomes.

  • The Routledge Companion to Remix Studies
THE ROUTLEDGE COMPANION TO REMIX STUDIES The Routledge Companion to Remix Studies comprises contemporary texts by key authors and artists who are active in the emerging field of remix studies. As an organic interna- tional movement, remix culture originated in the popular music culture of the 1970s, and has since grown into a rich cultural activity encompassing numerous forms of media. The act of recombining pre-existing material brings up pressing questions of authen- ticity, reception, authorship, copyright, and the techno-politics of media activism. This book approaches remix studies from various angles, including sections on history, aes- thetics, ethics, politics, and practice, and presents theoretical chapters alongside case studies of remix projects. The Routledge Companion to Remix Studies is a valuable resource for both researchers and remix practitioners, as well as a teaching tool for instructors using remix practices in the classroom. Eduardo Navas is the author of Remix Theory: The Aesthetics of Sampling (Springer, 2012). He researches and teaches principles of cultural analytics and digital humanities in the School of Visual Arts at The Pennsylvania State University, PA. Navas is a 2010–12 Post- Doctoral Fellow in the Department of Information Science and Media Studies at the University of Bergen, Norway, and received his PhD from the Program of Art and Media History, Theory, and Criticism at the University of California in San Diego. Owen Gallagher received his PhD in Visual Culture from the National College of Art and Design (NCAD) in Dublin. He is the founder of TotalRecut.com, an online com- munity archive of remix videos, and a co-founder of the Remix Theory & Praxis seminar group.

Asbestos, a fibrous silicate mineral widely used for its chemi- cal inertness and heat-resistant properties, until discovered to be a cause of certain cancers, has “dis- rupted the normal progress of work,” said Carol Strode. At the request of the student body, the completion of the con- struction on the food court is only a few months away. The food court is scheduled to be completed in December 2001, ready to open for the Spring 2002 semester. Though the harmful mineral has caused some set backs, the original windows and the exterior wall to the patio have been com- pleted, Strode said.

Media-N | The Journal of the New Media Caucus Winter 2021: Volume 17, Issue 1, Pages 9–28 Media-N | ISSN: 1942-017X Funes the Crate Digger: AI, Perception, and Recall SCOTT HADEN CHURCH Brigham Young University ABSTRACT This essay was inspired by Jorge Luis Borges’s short story about Funes, a young man with perfect perception and recall. His stunning archival ability allowed Funes to create a shorthand system for creativity, a “rhapsody of unconnected words” to stand in for his archive of memories: “Anything he thought, even once, remained ineradicably with him.” There is a similar malady today, a cultural hyperthymesia, a fetish for the archive. Information is recalcitrant and will not disappear, which cheapens the value of information while amplifying the need for human attention. The art of searching through the information rapids, then, depends upon elimination perhaps more than retrieval. Human curators with inclinations toward perception and recall are needed to filter through this influx of information for the purposes of creative production. This essay theorizes the remix artist as a Borgesian librarian, a curator of archived information fragments. Through the process of “crate digging,” remixers find long-forgotten samples of music and then exploit their allegorical potential. Like Funes, remix artists have an uncanny ability to perceive and to recall. Unlike Funes, rather than perceiving their talents as a curse, remix artists are model curators, exemplars of how to filter and make meaning from information overabundance. To illustrate these points, I will address the crate digging on display in two essential remix albums, DJ Shadow’s Endtroducing… and J Dilla’s Donuts.

While rock musicians have attempted to come to terms with this phenomenon by either performing a ‘Romantic’ sense of authenticity (basically by importing folk values to the production process) or ‘Modernist authenticity’ (by highlighting experimen- tation and alienation), Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett, creators of Gorillaz, found a third way which ingeniously allows them to do both. By creating a virtual rock band, and by hiding their own media personalities behind those of their virtual alter egos, they brought themselves into a position which allows them to produce ‘sincere’ popular music which ‘playfully’ stages the absurdities of major label music business while very successfully operating within its very confines.

The actress with the biggest arms since Cory Everson (Miss Olym pia), Linda Hamilton is the super-duper actress who starred alongside Arnold Schwartzenegger in Terminator 2. She was also in the hit late eighties t.v. show, Beauty and The Beast (is there a theme here?) The Japanese queens of weird noises, Cibo Matto, consist of: Miho Hatori, the witty vocalist and the keyboard-playing Yuka Honda. They rock and I met them. Nana na na boo boo! Angelica Houston, otherwise known as Morticia Adams, is the dark haired actress who has appeared in many movies about fish. David Bowie's super-model wife, Iman, is the advice-giving goddess who's favorite line seems to be: "Listen to Iman, darling." The original feminist, the French revolutionary, Joan of Arc, was burned at the stake for standing up for what she believed in. The raspy voice of the late Janis Joplin is still as well known as it was before she died a drug-related death at age 27 (however, drugs do not rock.) The flame-tressed, hot-headed actress Nicole Kidman seems to be climbing up the ladder of movie stardom quickly. The pseudo-airhead who sings about her smelly cat, Lisa Kudrow is actually a very intelligent woman, in fact, she is almost a genius. Juliette Lewis is the young actress who has been in too many things to list.

DRAFT – PLEASE DO NOT QUOTE OR CITE [What follows are excerpts (including one full chapter, Chapter 5) from the forthcoming book, Creative License: Digital Sampling and the Law by Kembrew McLeod and Peter DiCola, with Jenny Toomey and Kristin Thomson (Duke University Press).] INTRODUCTION “A lot of people look at hip-hop sampling as doing what be-boppers did—taking standards of the day and putting a new melody on top of it.” - Greg Tate Digital sampling is a musical technique that incorporates a portion of a previously existing sound recording into new music.1 As De La Soul’s Pasemaster Mase tells us, sampling is “taking sounds and meshing them together and putting them all in time, to come up with something totally different.” During the 1970s, hip-hop DJs used the turntable as an instrument that could manipulate sounds—transforming the record player from a technology of consumption to one of musical production. And in the 1980s, hip-hop artists built on these turntable techniques by using digital samplers to construct single songs out of dozens of sampled sound sources. “We’d grab a conga sound,” says Mix Master Mike, a member of the Beastie Boys and the DJ crew Invisibl Skratch Piklz. “We grabbed trumpet sounds, violin sounds, drumbeat sounds, and re-manipulated them and created our own music.” Sampling can be done by using a variety of media and methods, including: cutting up magnetic audiotape on analog equipment; physically manipulating vinyl records on a turntable; and using digital technologies like computers or drum machines. While the term “digital sampling” refers only to the latter method, many people nevertheless use “sampling” more generally as a stand-in for sound collage, in all its forms.
