SPORTS SATURDAY, MARCH 28, 2015 Kings down slumping Islanders UNIONDALE: Anze Kopitar scored with 4:23 left and defenseman Alec Martinez had two assists as the Los Angeles Kings won the third straight game of their road trip by beating the slumping New York Islanders 3-2 on Thursday. Kopitar, who had a goal and five assists in his previous three games, got to a deflected puck off a drive by defenseman Andrej Sekera and fired it past Jaroslav Halak for his 16th goal. Jonathan Quick made 25 saves in his 400th NHL game. He has won at New Jersey, the New York Rangers, and the Islanders on this trip that has two games left. Nick Shore netted his first career goal in his 28th game, and Tyler Toffoli also scored for the playoff-hopeful Kings. PREDATORS 3, LIGHTNING 2 Pekka Rinne made 28 saves for his 40th win as the Nashville Predators moved into first place in the Central Division. Mike Ribeiro, Paul Gaustad and Mike Santorelli scored for the Predators, who took a one-point lead over St. Louis. The Blues have played one fewer game. Rinne made a pad save on Alex Killornís in- close backhand early in the third. The goalie had a career-best 43 wins in 2011-12. Tampa Bay got goals from Vladislav Namestnikov and Brian Boyle. DUCKS 3, BRUINS 2 Ryan Getzlaf scored 3:09 into overtime to lift the Anaheim Ducks to victory. Getzlaf, who also assisted on Corey Perryís tying goal late in the third period, beat Bruins goalie Tuukka Rask from the slot with a wrist shot over his shoulder to snap the Ducksí two- game skid. Ducks goalie Frederik Andersen stopped 27 shots. Loui Eriksson and Ryan Spooner scored for the Bruins. Rask finished with 29 saves. Boston dropped its sixth straight but tied Ottawa for the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference. RANGERS 5, SENATORS 1 Chris Kreider had two goals and an assist as the New York Rangers clinched a playoff spot. Dan Boyle, Mats Zuccarello and Tanner Glass also scored for the Rangers, who have 101 points. The P-Bruins got two goals from Ryan Fitzgerald along with goals from Anton Blidh, Jordan Szwarz, Trent Frederic and Austin Czarnik while Zane McIntyre made his 42nd start of the season in net. Providence dominated the zone time in the opening period and it showed on the scoreboard. After being held scoreless despite an 8-1 shots edge through six minutes, Blidh gave the P-Bruins a 1-0 lead at 7:59. Taking a pass from Cameron Hughes, Blidh started a 2-on-1 break with Jack Studnicka up the right side. Rather than pass, Blidh surprised Hartford goalie Alexander Georgiev with a wrister from inside the right circle for his 11th goal of the season. Just 1:11 later, Szwarz doubled that lead with his 21st goal of the season. At the bottom of the left circle, he blasted a one-timer in off a pass from Fitzgerald to give Providence a 2-0 lead into the first intermission. That domination continued into period number two with Providence tacking on a trio of goals. Fitzgerald found the back of the net on the power play at 2:58, tapping a beautiful feed from Czarnik in from the crease to make things 3-0 Providence. He struck again at 8:37, taking advantage of a poor Hartford clearing attempt.

The courting period has provided the Winnipeg Jets with the opportunity to express interest in several players they'd like to pursue come Saturday when the window to sign unrestricted free agents officially opens. Several players — including goalies Steve Mason and Brian Elliott and defenceman Karl Alzner, among others — have at least demonstrated some level of interest in joining the Jets. It's important to remember: for agents, the courting period is the time to drum up additional interest for the client. And a lot can happen between now and Saturday. Another team can swoop in with a bigger offer or provide an additional year or higher dollar amount to seal the deal. But the Jets go into this weekend with two distinct needs at the top of the wish list: an experienced starting goalie to share the net with Connor Hellebuyck and a defenceman who can play the left side, preferably a left-handed shooter. Historically, the Jets haven't been a team to swing for the fences or overpay to land a marquee name on July 1. Veteran centre Olli Jokinen was a place-holder and his signing in 2012 allowed Mark Scheifele to get some additional seasoning at the junior level before he was ready to be a full-time NHLer.

Besides my column in The Hockey News’ Ultimate Pool Guide, and my contributions to this year’s Score Forecaster (fifth year doing each), I put an ad in McKeen’s. That covers the big three hockey pool magazines and you should have at least one of them as part of your draft prep. The other thing you need, of course, is this Guide right here. It is not only updated throughout the summer, but I also make sure that the features/tidbits found in here are unique. I know what’s in the print mags and I have always tried to set this Guide apart from them. Once again, this is an automatic download – just pick it up in your downloads section. Look for one or two updates in August, then one or two updates between September 1st and 14th. After that, when training camp is in full swing, I will be updating every two or three days right into October. Make sure you download the latest prior to heading into your draft (and don’t ask me on one day if I’ll be updating the next day – I get so many of those that I am unable to answer them all, just download as late as you can). Any updates beyond this original release will be in bold blue.

    Providence Bruins Nathan Roberts [email protected], 401.680.4734 Eddie Pannone [email protected] P-BRUINS WEEK IN REVIEW 2/20/17 – 2/26/17 Providence, RI – There are just 20 games remaining in the 2016-17 AHL regular season, and after sweeping their set of three weekend games the Providence Bruins remain in strong position to make the playoffs for a fifth straight season. The P-Bruins started their weekend with a home-and-home series against a Bridgeport team they had just one win against all year and a team ahead of them in the standings. After taking the first game at home 2-1, Providence came back from a 3-2 third period deficit by scoring two goals in 15 seconds to win 4-3 in Bridgeport. Their weekend concluded with a 3-0 win over Springfield at the Dunk, Zane McIntyre’s first career shutout. Providence now sits second in both the Atlantic Division and Eastern Conference with a record of 33-14-5-4 and 75 points. Those 75 points are second most in the AHL and the team is just four points away from first place. In a loaded division, however, the team will have to continue their good play as fifth place Hershey has 67 points and only the top four teams from each division will make the playoffs. Tommy Cross led the team in scoring for the weekend, posting a goal and three assists while scoring in every game. His lone goal was the game winner on Saturday in Bridgeport and he also upped his team lead in rating to +19.

The P-Bruins got two goals from Danton Heinen and goals apiece from Anton Blidh and Ryan Fitzgerald while Zane McIntyre made his 15th straight postseason start in net. Syracuse opened the scoring just over eight minutes into the opening period, taking advantage of their first power play. Matt Taormina sent a pass from the blue line over to Cory Conacher at the top of the right circle. He blasted a one-timer by McIntyre for his fifth goal of the playoffs as the Crunch went up 1-0. That lead doubled at 14:18, as Michael Bournival tipped a Mathieu Brodeur slap shot from the blue line that found the back of the net for his fourth postseason goal as Syracuse entered the intermission up 2-0. The Crunch netted a third goal five minutes into the second, chasing McIntyre from the game. With Yanni Gourde screening him in front, Matt Taormina fired a shot from the blue line by the All-Star goalie to make things 3-0 and force Providence to bring Malcolm Subban in for the first time this postseason. The P-Bruins responded after the change in net, showing signs of life and getting on the board with 2:25 left in the period.
