7 | Checking for Charity 2017 our is

Checking For Charity isto a non profit assist corporation that is changing the world through competitive hockey events.

A little ambitious? Yes. But we believe that change in this world starts by creating a small movement of passionate people with a common goal.

Checking For Charity was founded by a tight knit group of hockey players with a shared love for the game and a desire to make the world a better place. Since the beginning, Checking For Charity has been committed to not only raising as much money as possible for charity but also to putting on the most competitive and professional tournaments and events.

Each team that enters a Checking For Charity tournament will select a charity to represent. All proceeds from team entry fees, donations, corporate sponsors, merchandise sales, raffles, our Beef & Beer event, and other fundraising activities are placed into one pot. Each team is guaranteed a percentage of that pot by participating in the tournament. Each team has the opportunity to increase that percentage based on how they place in tournament play.

Our unique hockey centric approach to raise money and awareness for the various charities represented at our tournaments has inspired more and more people to become a part of the Checking For Charity movement.

Whether you are a player, volunteer, a sponsor, even just a fan, we want you to join our team!

FOR CHECKING Charity

13 | Checking for Charity 2017 a Division Washed Up Hockey Legends (WHL) PLAYING FOR: Homes For Our Troops We are a national non-profit organization founded in 2004 who are strongly committed to helping those who have selflessly given to our country and have returned home with serious disabilities and injuries since September 11, 2001. We assist severely injured Veterans and their families by raising money, building materials and professional labor, and by coordinating the process of building a home that provides maximum freedom of movement and the ability to live more independently. The homes provided by Homes for Our Troops are given at NO COST to the Veterans we serve. PDX All Stars PLAYING FOR: Dollar For Portland Dollar For is located in the beautiful green city of Portland, Oregon. We are a non-profit organization that strives to inspire people to be generous by donating as little as $1 a month to help families with medical debt. Once a month we partner with a local organization to help us identify a family in need. Once we have found a family that needs medical debt relief, we shoot a short video that tells their story. This video goes online and is pushed through social media with a goal to get people to give $1. If we all gave a small amount we can make a big impact in the lives of local families. 100% of every dollar given to Dollar For goes directly to the specific families in need. This has been our vision and desire from the moment we thought of this idea. To cover our expenses, we will depend and lean on our incredible donors, sponsors and charitable foundations. We want people to know that every dollar matters because 100% of every dollar will truly go to these families that are in medical debt.

Its various fundraising partners and programs support the nonprofit’s mission to save and improve the lives of as many children as possible. 10 Barrel Brawlers PLAYING FOR: Make-A-Wish Children’s Wish Foundation International is a non-profit wish granting organization founded on the premise that seriously ill children regardless of race, color creed, religion, or economic status, are not able to experience a normal, carefree childhood. Children’s Wish Foundation will fulfill the favorite wish for any child having a limited life expectancy with medical-science as we know it today. Each wish will be complete while the child is healthy enough to fully enjoy it. The immediate family is included in the wish fulfillment so that the child and family can share in the experience and create happy memories together. LITTLE CUTIES PLAYING FOR: Child Aid We believe education is the most effective long-term solution to poverty. Day in and day out we work to improve children’s lives by helping them learn to read, succeed in school and develop the literacy skills they need to improve their lives.

14 | Checking for Charity 2017 15 | Checking for Charity 2017 B Division C.O. Rockchucks PLAYING FOR: Central Oregon Sparrow Clubs Sparrow Clubs USA exists to set the stage for simple, yet heroic acts of kindness in schools and youth culture, through the concept of empowering kids to help kids in medical need. The ultimate goal of Sparrow Clubs is to impact youth culture by imprinting compassion, generosity, and integrity on the hearts of kids in local schools. We believe that compassion can overcome anger, that generosity can overcome selfishness, and that integrity can overcome apathy. The Sparrow Clubs program compels and motivates kids of all ages to look beyond themselves for the sake of serving others in need—not just the family of a child in medical need, but others throughout our community. Serving others leads to change at a heart level. The Hosers PLAYING FOR: OHSU Knight Cancer Center The OHSU Knight Cancer Institute is an international leader in cancer research and personalized cancer treatment. The director, Brian Druker, M.D., helped usher in the era of personalized cancer medicine with his discovery that cancer cells could be shut down by disabling the molecules that drive their growth without harming healthy cells. The drug that resulted from that research, Gleevec®, revolutionized how cancer is treated. It also inspired a new wave of exploration of treatments that target cancer-causing molecules. Most recently, Dr. Druker’s plans to advance the early detection of cancer beyond methods used today, so that it’s possible to catch and treat the biological triggers of the disease, inspired Nike co- founder Phil Knight and his wife, Penny, to pledge a $500 million donationto Knight Cancer if OHSU raised an additional $500 million as part of a two-year fundraising campaign. Thousands of donors from across the country and around the globe stepped up to the Knight Cancer Challenge, and OHSU announced the completion of the challenge on June 25, 2015.
