The Kenyan agricultural sector contributes 26.2 % of GDP and employs 80 % of the labor force either directly or indirectly in related activities (GOK, 1997). The livestock sub-sector plays an important role in the livelihood of millions of Kenyans. Livestock accounts for about 10 % GDP and 30% farm gate value of agricultural commodities (GOK, 1997). It contributes products such as milk, meat, eggs, hides and skins and manure for home consumption and surplus products are marketed earning farmers income and therefore contributing to household food security. The livestock sub-sector employs 50% of the agricultural labor force and raw materials for local dairy and meat processing industries. In the mixed crop–livestock production systems in the high and medium potential areas of Kenya, livestock provide manure used to improve soil fertility resulting in better crop yield. Traction power from cattle is useful in land preparation, weeding and transportation. In the pastoral production systems there is total dependence on livestock (cattle, sheep, goats and camels) by the pastoral households. The current study focuses on the constraints faced by cattle producers because cattle has been ranked the top livestock species kept by farmers in most parts of Kenya (Emongor et al, 1999).

    Kenya’s Tana River Delta under siege By Serah Munguti Communication and Advocacy Coordinator, Nature Kenya The Tana River Delta in Kenya’s north coast is under unprecedented threat as corporations and foreign agencies scramble to exploit its riches for export crops, biofuels and minerals. The projects are proposed in an area where no development project has succeeded for the last fifty years. Tens of thousands of people would lose their livelihoods, and globally endangered birds and primates and crucial wintering sites for migratory birds would be lost, if the rush of schemes in the Delta goes ahead. The Tana River Delta is a vast patchwork of palm savanna, seasonally flooded grassland, forest fragments, lakes, woodland, mangroves, beaches, sand dunes, coral reefs, seagrass beds and the river itself. This ecosystem supports several communities and enormous numbers of livestock, wildlife and water birds. Large assemblages of water birds qualify the Tana Delta as an Important Bird Area. A 1992-3 study recorded 22 different species of water birds occurring in the Tana Delta in significant numbers – 1% or more of the biogeographic population – including pelicans, storks, egrets and terns. In seasons of heavy rains, some five thousand water birds, representing over 16 species, nest in the Delta, and the young fly off to populate wetlands all over the country. The great numbers of water birds – more than 15,000 recorded in a recent water bird count covering only a third of the Delta – indicate the Delta’s importance for conservation of migratory species, and for tourism. In addition, the Delta hosts the endangered Basra Reed Warbler, vulnerable Lappet-faced Vulture and near-threatened Malindi Pipit, and 13 of Kenya's 30 East African Coast biome bird species.

He makes his living as a Boda Boda driver, the local term for the young men who transport residents of Kakamega about town on the rear of bicycles. But Akhonya sees each pas- Zsenger encounter as more than a source of income; it’s an opportunity to educate and inform. From the front of his bicycle, cars whizzing past him on Kakamega’s dusty roads, he talks with his passengers about AIDS. Discussing matters such as HIV testing and proper condom use, he has turned his job into a mechanism for helping his neighbors maintain their own health. Akhonya is one of about 200 Boda Boda drivers who have completed a five-day, peer-education training program on HIV/AIDS since October 2003, enabling them to spread prevention mes- sages in the towns of Bungoma, Busia, Kakamega, Mumias, Nzoia and Webuye.
