LESSON FIFTEEN Hezekiah: The Challenge from Assyria Quote: “He trusted in the LORD God of Israel; so that after him was none like him among all the kings of Judah, nor any that were before him. For he clave to the LORD, and departed not from following him, but kept his commandments, which the LORD commanded Moses.” 2 Kings 18:5, 6 Bible Marking Hezekiah - 2 Kings 18 2 Kings 18:1 - “Hezekiah” - Means “strengthened of Yahweh”. It was only through Yahweh’s strength that the reformation was accomplished, that Hezekiah was healed, and that Assyria was defeated. So great was Hezekiah, that we are given 3 records of his life (Kings, Chronicles and Isaiah). A Reformation on Divine Principles Mark above & “Ahaz” - Means “possessor”, ie. a selfish man, below 2 Kg 18 who was Judah’s worst king Ahaz had given himself over to idolatry, following the examples of those who had left the truth (2 Chron 28:1-2), and 2 Kings 18:2 - “Abi” - The margin has - ‘Abijah, of the world in general (2 Kg 16:3, 10-11). He therefore made 2 Chron 29:1’. “Abijah” means “Yah is Father”. Judah “naked” in the sight of Yahweh, and “transgressed sore She appears to be the inspiration for Hezekiah to against Yahweh” (2 Chron 28:19). Now Hezekiah brought devote his life to the service of Yahweh. See about a reformation upon Divine principles. He turned the Prov 22:6. people back to Yahweh and His Word and to the Pioneers of “Zachariah” - Means “Yahweh hath remembered” the truth (David, Asaph and Gad and Nathan etc). -

Barton Payne [p.50] The four chapters of Isaiah 36-39 that appear also in II Kings 18-20 and that contain historical dialog between the prophet and his king, Hezekiah, have produced more critical debate than any other section of I and II Kings.1 They furnish also some of our primary evidence for the unity of the Book of Isaiah,2 forming, as Delitzsch has put it, a “bridge” to the prophecies that follow.3 A thorough treatment of this evidence hence becomes impossible under present limitations. The writer would seek, however, to indicate three specific areas within this larger discussion in which sharpened awareness may contribute to a defense of the total authority of Scripture. L. CONDITIONING FACTORS IN EVANGELICALISM’S APPROACH TO ISAIAH 36-39 If we take, for example, such a question as the relation of Isaiah 36-39 to II Kings 18-20, it appears at the outset that liberal and conservative writers reach opposite conclusions because of their respective methodologies. The liberal, e.g. S.R. Driver, limits his admissable evidence to inductive comparisons of literary detail and of thematic concepts; he thus decides in favor of the priority of Kings.4 The conservative, e.g. Franz Delitzsch, while utilizing historical prose style as a confirmatory factor, concentrates on two reasons that arise (1) out of an analogy with other sections of Kings and Isaiah and (2) out of the authority of Chronicles, deductively applied to the chapters in question; he thus insists upon the originality of Isaiah.5 Bible believing scholars appear to be conditioned by five distinctive principles. -

You have a plan for each of us, and it unfolds throughout the turmoil of life, because You have chosen us for glory despite our unworthiness. We praise You for the blessings You give us so generously, and ask to be made worthy of our call. AMEN! Prayer Suggestions General theme of the week: BUILDING 1. For yourself Pray in those moments when there is a break between the things you are doing; pray for what comes next, just a prayer placing what you are doing in God’s hands, or whatever comes to you 2. For your friends and family Using the moments of the day again, pray for the members of your family and your friends; you can get through quite a few in the course of a day! 3. For the church and its work Pray for the churches of your neighbourhood, and seek God’s blessing on the work that they do 4. For your neighbourhood, your country and the world (News) Pray for those whose work is to gather taxes. Remember that Jesus blessed a tax collector, and seek to do the same. At this time of economic uncertainty, we need the tax systems of our countries to collect everything that is legally due, for the good of governments as well as the whole world. -

Therefore lift up your prayer for the remnant that is left.' " 5 So the servants of King Hezekiah came to Isaiah. 6 And Isaiah said to them, "Thus shall you say to your master, 'Thus says the LORD: "Do not be afraid of the words which you have heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed Me. 7 Surely I will send a spirit upon him, and he shall hear a rumor and return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land." He Text of Today's Gospel Is, I Am Sure, Very Familiar to You, and I Am Sure
21st Sunday A he text of today’s gospel is, I am sure, very familiar to you, and I am sure you have T heard many homilies on the confession of Peter’s faith and Our Lord’s entrustment to him of the keys of heaven. So precisely because of that, I am going to focus more today on the first reading from the prophet Isaiah. It is often said that we Catholics don’t know the Bible – and if all we read are short snippets like today’s, of course, that is inevitable. So let’s put the first reading in context. Isaiah tells us that Shebna, the Master of the palace – King Hezekiah’s chancellor – was dismissed and replaced by Eliakim, the son of Hilkiah. And Isaiah continues: I place the key of the House of David on his shoulder; should he open, no one shall close, should he close, no one shall open. Now what’s all that about? King Hezekaiah was the son of Ahaz. Ahaz – a young king, he was only 20 when he came to the throne of the Southern Kingdom, that is, of Judah, and 36 when he died - had followed a policy of accepting the over-lordship of the Assyrians. He gained peace for Judah by paying a tax or tribute to Assyria. But he went further: travelling to Damascus, he pledged allegiance to Tiglath-Pileser, and worshipped the Assyrian gods. He had Assyrian artifacts set up in the temple in Jerusalem, and temples to the Assyrian gods set up in Judah. -

1 Jesus Christ, the Key of David Isaiah 22:15-25 Introduction: In Isaiah 22, the Lord sent Isaiah to make an announcement to a government official named Shebna, who served Hezekiah, the king of Judah. The news he had for Shebna was not good. Shebna had, apparently, used his position to increase his own wealth and glory, and had usurped authority which did not belong to him. Shebna received the news that he would soon be abruptly removed from his office. Isaiah also announced that another man (named Eliakim) would take his place, who would administer the office faithfully. This new man would be a type of Jesus Christ. Isaiah 22:15-25 I. The fall of self-serving Shebna (vv. 15-19) In verse 15, the Lord sent Isaiah to deliver a message to Shebna, who was the treasurer in the government of Judah. He is also described as being “over the house.” This particular position was first mentioned in the time of Solomon. (Apparently, the office did not exist in the days of King Saul or King David, because it is not mentioned.) Afterward, it became an important office both in the northern and southern kingdoms. 1 Kings 4:1-6; 16:9; 18:3 2 Kings 10:5 The office of the man who was “over the house” of the king of Judah seems to have increased in importance over time, until it was similar to the Egyptian office of vizier. Joseph had been given this incredibly powerful position in the government of Pharaoh. (In fact, this position seems to have been created, for the first time, in Joseph’s day.) Joseph possessed all the power of the Pharaoh. -

BRINDLE The development of Samaritanism and its alienation from Juda ism was a process that began with the division of the kingdom of Israel, and continued through successive incidents which promoted antagonism, including the importation of foreign colonists into Sa maria by Assyria, the rejection of the new Samaritan community by the Jews, the building of a rival temple on Mt. Gerizim, the political and religious opportunism of the Samaritans, and the destruction of both the Samaritan temple and their capital of Shechem by John Hyrcanus during the second century B.C. The Samaritan religion at the time of Jesus had become Mosaic and quasi-Sadducean, but strongly anti-Jewish. Jesus recognized their heathen origins and the falsity of their religious claims. * * * INTRODUCTION ELATIONS between the Jews and the Samaritans were always R strained. Jesus ben Sirach (ca. 180 B.C.) referred to the Samari tans as "the foolish people that dwell in Shechem" (Sir 50:26). There is a tradition that 300 priests and 300 rabbis once gathered in the temple court in Jerusalem to curse the Samaritans with all the curses in the Law of Moses. When the Jews wanted to curse Jesus Christ, they called him demon-possessed and a Samaritan in one breath (J ohn 8:48). The Samaritans are important to biblical studies for several reasons: 1 (1) They claim to be the remnant of the kingdom of Israel, specifically of the tribes of Ephraim and Manasseh, with priests of the line of Aaron/ Levi. -
Isaiah Is Called "The Book of Salvation."
The Book of Isaiah Introduction: Isaiah is called "The Book of Salvation." The name Isaiah means "Yahweh is salvation" or “Yahweh is the source of salvation.” Isaiah, who is called the Prince of Prophets, shines above all the other writers and prophets of Scripture. His mastery of the language, his rich and vast vocabulary, and his poetic skill have earned him the title, "Shakespeare of the Bible." He was educated, distinguished, and privileged, yet remained a deeply spiritual man. He was committed to obedience over the long haul of his 55-60 year ministry as a prophet of God. He was a true patriot who loved his country and his people. Strong tradition suggests that he died a martyr’s death under the reign of King Manasseh by being placed within the hollow of a tree trunk and sawed in two. He was a contemporary of Amos, Hosea and Micah. As might be expected, salvation is the overarching theme in the book of Isaiah. Other themes include judgment, holiness, punishment, captivity, the fall of the nation, comfort, hope and salvation through the coming Messiah. The first 39 books of Isaiah contain very strong messages of judgment against Judah and a call to repentance and holiness. The people exhibited an outward form of godliness, but their hearts had become corrupted. God warned them through Isaiah, to come clean and purify themselves, but they ignored his message. Isaiah predicted the demise and captivity of Judah, yet comforted them with this hope: God has promised to provide a Redeemer. The last 27 chapters contain God's message of forgiveness, consolation and hope, as God speaks through Isaiah, revealing his plan of blessing and salvation through the coming Messiah. -

Isaiah 37:14-20, 38:1-8, 39:1-8 Over the next few weeks, we will be celebrating the conclusion of our All-In journey at The Summit Church. The sermon this weekend takes a closer look at how Hezekiah’s story finishes. At one time, Hezekiah was a hero, a faithful man, and an intercessor for his people. The invasion of the Assyrians tested his faith in God and Hezekiah responded with confident trust in God. As we will see this week, other circumstances in Hezekiah’s life showed that he was not firm in his faith to the end of his story. From Isaiah chapters 37-39, we will learn from Hezekiah’s journey of faith through his prayer life. These chapters provide more details about Hezekiah than what we learn from 2 Chronicles 32. The progression of his prayers will reveal what was most important to Hezekiah in the later years of his life. On the whole, Hezekiah was one of the greatest and most spiritually faithful kings in Israelite history. The point of this study is not to smear his name or sit in judgment on his character. Rather, the biblical authors, by telling this part of Hezekiah’s story, were showing that even Hezekiah could not remain faithful to the end. The end of his reign led to the most grievous time of Exile in Israel’s long history. Israel was still waiting for it’s true king to lead the people in faith, peace, and righteousness.
