׀Beth Zion Congregation | 3 Dear Beth Zion Family,

I am writing these words would remove one division, the entire operation while sitting on my Mirpeset would literally fall apart. The same is said about (balcony) in Tel Aviv. About the Jewish Nation. We are a people made up twenty five meters away is the of so many different types of Jews and each beach and the Israeli flag is individual serves a crucial purpose – and we flapping in the early morning need each other to maximize our success as breeze. In a few hours, the individuals and as a Nation. sand will be covered with bathers. However, right now The same can be said for modern . Israel there are just a few hard-core, early morning needs the settlers and the pioneers who live swimmers and the never-ending stream of along the border who convey to the terrorists FROM THE RABBI’S DESK THE RABBI’S FROM joggers running along the boardwalk. Behind who attack them daily that we are here to me, the construction has already begun on new stay. Israel also needs the high tech industry, building projects that spring up overnight like building projects and the exquisitely beautiful the dandelions that cover my front yard from Mediterranean beaches as well. Each supports one day to the next. the other. Israel also needs our support and loyalty as well. Loyalty does not mean that we I have an application on my phone called, “Red need to agree with everything that Israel does, Alert” that goes off whenever missiles are shot but just like a family, as dysfunctional as it may into Israel from any of the bordering countries or be, and no matter the disagreements that go on territories. Last night, there was a steady stream behind closed doors, they are still a family and of alerts when rockets were shot from Gaza into need to remain fiercely loyal to each other no the bordering settlements and kibbutzim. I do matter what. not get alerts from the many “terror kites” and “terror balloons” launched into Israel. However, Last year, the High Holiday theme at Beth these new modes of delivering damage and Zion Congregation was, “Celebrating the destruction have already destroyed thousands Blessing in our lives.” This year, as we approach of acres of crops and forestland. another High Holiday season, our theme will be, “Appreciating each other, regardless of The Gaza border is seventy kilometers from our differences.” Embracing this concept will where I sit on my balcony, yet the two scenes strengthen our relationships with everyone we could not be more different. Here in Tel Aviv, come in contact with – especially family. bathers and joggers enjoy the Mediterranean shore. In the communities adjacent to Gaza, I look forward to welcoming each and everyone there is destruction and fear. It is as if there are back to Beth Zion this High Holiday season. two different countries – one at war and one On behalf of Raizie and myself – Shana Tova where Israel is a vacation mecca, where building U’metuka – May we be blessed with a happy projects are constant and where high-tech start- and sweet new year. ups bring more venture capitalist investors to the county than anywhere else in the world besides Silicon Valley. Two different realities indeed. Rabbi Boruch Perton The great Rabbi Yisroel Mayer Kagan – known as the Chafetz Chaim, wanting to convey the importance of every Jewish man and women, used this parable. In the army, there are many different divisions; the infantry, the navy, Special thanks to tankists, the supply line, medical staff, kitchen, Devorah Abenhaim logistics, etc. Each and every unit is crucial to who has generously and unfailingly the success of the whole operation and if you given her time to Beth Zion by providing the Parsha for our weekly Shabbat Bulletin

Wednesday (after Chagim) 7:30 pm continuing with Parshat Noach “An in depth study of the book of Breishit”

“The women of Beth Zion have been most fortunate this year, in having Ora Rubenstein lead them in Torah Studies. Ora’s vast knowledge in this area and personable teaching style made our weekly sessions very enjoyable. This year, we did an in depth study of The Book of Genesis. We are looking forward to resume our learning with Ora after the holidays. Whatever topic is chosen, we know will not only be informative but also interesting and thought-provoking.” N PROGRAMS WOME FOR

During the summer months, Beth Zion Women are invited to come out for shiurim on long Shabbat afternoons in various homes around Cote St. Luc

We would like to thank the following people We would like to thank the following people who gave shiurim: who hosted this summer

Shelley Rothman-Benhaim Mathilde Benarrosch Yehuda Kops Shelley Rothman-Benhaim Rivi Levkovich Tina Bessner Sonia Sarah Lipsyc Bonnie Farkas Rikee Gutherz Madoff Barbara Mazer Dr. Bruce Mazer Rachel Pfeffer Neta Noiman Agnes Preminger Rabbi Boruch Perton Margaret Ronis Cindy Samuels Ronda Rosen Bluma Turgel Thérèse Stolovitsky Rabbi Michael Wolff Bluma Turgel Thea Yetnikoff “How to beat the long summer Shabbotot? I attend the ladies’ shiurim Shabbos afternoons at 5 pm, at various womens’ homes. Spiced by interesting lectures and tasty tidbits, it’s shmooze time for the Shabbos gals...Beth Zion’s own Shelley Benhaim faithfully organizes these weekly events.

How to beat the short winter Shabbatot? I attend Rabbi Perton’s Navi shiur, every Friday night at the Rabbi’s home. Aside from brushing up on my all too meager Navi knowledge, there’s Rebbetzin Raizie’s famous bourbon brownies!! Rabbi Perton’s lecture series on Tuesday nights provided insights into the Lost Tribes, as each year he explores various areas of Jewish Studies - always very PERTONent and interesting. This year, we were also treated to Rabbi Perton’s Pirke Avot classes, Thursday mornings, which proved to be deeply insightful. Yehuda Kops gives a weekly parsha shiur Sunday evenings - inspiring!

MAKE BETH ZION GREAT AGAIN! (my new slogan...and I’m not running for office)

Of course, every Shabbos, I take my 7 minute walk to Place Sidney Shoham, enter the doors of Beth Zion, and hear words of Torah, happy to greet all those lovely people at the upstairs minyan, downstairs minyan, and that other little rollicking minyan called the kiddush club. Every moment in the Beth Zion building, I can feel Rabbi Shoham’s presence.. Hope to see you there! Often!”
