Some guests were assigned to be “grinders,” which waves on an incredible aquatic experience in Stingray City. means they operated manual winches for controlling things I was next looking forward to joining our guests on a different like the boom and raising and trimming the sails. I was named kind of Caribbean activity, participating in a mock race on the Team Captain (I’ll explain more of that in a moment) and a world-class, America’s Cup-style yacht. put in charge of the main mast. (There were also two or three deck hands on board to assist.) I had no idea how much fun I was about to have. We set out on our tender boats and, since I was Team Captain, I had the privilege of choosing our vessel. I selected True North IV. These 12 Metre Challenge sailing experiences in St. Maarten are on four beautiful racing yachts: Stars & Stripes 87, Stars & Stripes 86, Canada II and True North IV.

4 As Team Captain, I was charged with two main duties. First, The shouting of orders by our skipper was key. We had to despite my complete lack of sailing experience, I had to pay close attention to all the moving parts, taught ropes and select our track on the course. Second, my role required sudden adjustments, reacting instantly to his orders to take me to motivate the team to victory — something I felt quite the lead. It felt like something between a dance competition, equipped for…until we got started. Apparently, my idea of a sparring match and…flying. We held the lead for most of egging our team on by trash-talking our opponents is a bit the race, slicing through the surf, narrowly avoiding a collision too nice. The more competitive guests schooled me in how to with the competition and heeling so sharply that you weren’t do it properly. They were almost too good at it! sure if you’d fly off — it was thrilling!

The race started with a bang, albeit not a literal one. After I continued to trash talk and handle the main mast while pulling anchor, we set sail, and once both vessels aligned our captain called out the orders. The grinding of the on the course, we were off! I’ve always enjoyed a good winch, the trimming of the sail, the constant vigilance and breeze and have always respected the power of the wind, responsiveness required…I don’t know that any of us realized from my time in California with the Santa Ana winds to my how hard the work would be. We held strong until the last living in Florida, weathering tropical storms and more…but, leg of the race. aruba’s pink beach SHARE THE SAND WITH A FEW NEW FEATHERED FRIENDS

8 “The first thing that stood out to me wasn’t their color, aruba’s but how tall they were.”

BY MARI DE ARMAS It was early November and the fall season air was already brisk. Sweaters and scarves, instead of sandals and spaghetti straps, were now staples of my wardrobe. A few months prior I had moved to a new city and, for the first time in my life, I was four hours away from the nearest beach, instead of my pink beach usual hard limit of no more than 45 minutes from door to sand. I needed an SHARE THE SAND WITH A FEW NEW FEATHERED FRIENDS escape that required sun, swimming and frosty umbrella drinks, so I looked at a weather map, kept heading south until I read 85 degrees and discovered my next destination: ORANJESTAD. continue...

I placed my towel down without lifting Aruban mornings at this location before heading out to one my gaze from the flamingos. Incredible. I reached into my bag of the island’s beaches. The staff was gracious and I enjoyed for my phone to be ready to snap a picture, when I noticed a listening to them seamlessly switch from Papiamento to pair of odd looking, pink webbed feet next to mine. Dutch to English throughout the morning, plus their breakfast was outstanding. On this particular day, I hurriedly devoured “Oh, hello,” I said very much out loud. The flamingo didn’t my poffertjes (delicious Dutch-style silver dollar pancakes) respond, it was on its way to visit a friend who was standing because I had a boat to catch. It’s the only way to reach in the mangroves directly behind my beach lounger. Renaissance Island, home of Flamingo Beach. The first thing that stood out to me wasn’t their color, but Flamingo Beach gets its name — not from pink sand or a how tall they were. With their necks stretched out, they’re bird-like shape — but because it quite literally has flamingos nearly my height (they can grow to almost 5 feet tall). And, freely roaming the shore. This was too good to be true, so when they’re that close, their beaks can look menacing, but I had to see it for myself. they were actually quite gentle when taking food pellets from my hand. The ultimate flamingo encounter happened After a quick, 10-minute boat ride toward a lush little island in at the fresh-water showers, where they like to congregate. the middle of the clearest blue-green water I’ve seen in recent I went in to rinse off the salt after my swim and two of my memory, I disembarked onto a charming dock surrounded by new feathered friends joined me, then bent their necks for mangroves. MORE THAN FLAMINGOS After a few hours with the flamingos, I walked over to the “OH, HELLO.” other side of the island and set up camp at Iguana Beach. Along the boardwalk and through the mangroves, I caught my This adult-only side of the island offered a wider beach and first glimpse of beach: three rows of perfectly arranged beach every amenity I could ever want for a perfect beach day: drink loungers over white powder sand, facing a calm shore…then service, water-activity rentals, extra towels, a shop, a bar, a two flamingos came into the frame. Despite its importance in ancient and modern Mesoamerican societies, very little is known about agave’s domestication. That is most likely because the same species of agave can be found in several different gradations of domestication. Some agaves are completely domesticated and grown in plantations, some are tended in the wild, some seedlings (vegetative propagules) are transplanted into home gardens, some seeds collected and grown in seedbeds or nurseries for market.

OCEAN DRIVE MIAMI The Complete Guide

BY SARA SHULMAN

Ocean Drive is Miami’s most iconic street, likely because of all the movies it’s been featured in, and it’s also usually the first place people think of when they hear Miami Beach. The pastel-hued Art Deco buildings, colorful night lights, fancy cars and, of course, rows and rows of palm trees are exactly what make Ocean Drive quintessential Miami. Stretching from 1st street all the way up to 15th street, Ocean Drive is filled with colorful shops, all types of dining and, of course, the best people-watching around.

You don’t want to miss this emblematic locale.

20 History of Ocean Drive In the 1910s, Miami pioneers Carl Fisher, John Collins, and the banking Lummus brothers, bought a failing piece of cropland and mangroves from the father and son duo Henry and Charles Lum. The group of ambitious men had the pockets to invest in the swamp-land and, by 1913, Fisher completed the first luxury hotel in the area. Soon after that, the Lincoln Road shopping district was built and, by 1920, a South Beach land boom had started. Suddenly, hotels, mansions, and luxury buildings were popping up everywhere.

The architectural style most popular at the time was Art Deco, which is why so much of the area is built with the iconic look. As more and more hotels were popping up, Ocean Drive started to become a real hot spot, mainly for its views and proximity to the water.

By 1980, the Ocean Drive area was beginning to look run down and haggard.

It was losing its special appeal and many of the historic buildings weren’t kept up. But, this degradation prompted a city-wide renaissance of sorts, and the community mobilized to restore many of the priceless Art Deco buildings that are alive and well today.

RAPTORS IN I’ve been a huge fan of Jurassic Park ever since it came out in 1993. I even honed my impersonation of those famed and terrifying creatures to the point of being able to jump flat-footed onto a stainless-steel kitchen SITKA counter…but these aren’t those kinds of raptors. These are birds of prey, most notably, the regal and majestic national icon of the United States of America: the bald eagle. And, if you’ve not had the privilege of meeting one in person, they live up to the hype.

“THE BEST PART... WAS GETTING TO MEET THE RESIDENTS LIVING OUTSIDE.”

44 It was September and the weather, I was told, was rarely so We spent some time quietly observing the eagles in the perfect. I was on my first trip to Alaska and was fortunate Suzanne & Walter Scott Foundation Bald Eagle Flight to have my father with me (this was his third visit to our Training Center (I call it the SWSFBEFTC for short). It’s country’s Last Frontier). By the time we arrived in Sitka, a one-way mirrored, indoor training ground for eagles we’d walked on the otherworldly grounds of Mendenhall rehabilitating and relearning how to fly again. EXPERIENCE ICY STRAIT POINT WITH JOHAN DYBDAHL by Terry Ward

In every fishing port, down every winding fjord and at the foot of every calving glacier, an Alaskan cruise is full of discoveries. But, there’s something particularly special about coming ashore at Icy Strait Point, the site of a historic salmon cannery near the tiny town of Hoonah in southeast Alaska.

You’re on Chichagof Island here, a dense wilderness home to Hoonah, Alaska’s largest native Tlingit village, and more coastal brown bears than humans (prepare to be amazed — they’re even bigger than grizzlies).

Hoonah and Icy Strait Point make for a truly wild port of call where you can immerse in Alaska’s native culture and wildlife in equal measure.

Whether you choose to set out on whale or brown bear watching tours, kick back with Icy Strait Point’s iconic “Crabby Bloody Mary” (it’s garnished with beach asparagus, a Tlingit foraging favorite) or take in a cultural program led by the local people, stories unfold from the moment you step onto the island.

“When you walk off the ship, go up the ramp and reach the head of the dock, you’re already on the beach and in the woods. It’s feet-on-the-ground wilderness and a real close to nature experience,” says Johan Dybdahl, Director of Special Projects for Icy Strait Point.

Born in Ketchikan to a Norwegian father and a half-Tlingit/half-Irish mother, Dybdahl moved here with his family in 1947 when he was just two months old. His father worked as a tender captain for fishing boats during the summer months and as a winter watchman for the historic salmon cannery at Icy Strait Point during the long winter months, when the family was the cannery’s lone year-round residents.

48 Today, you can look for Dybdahl Tlingit stories like that one and others at Icy Strait Point, wearing his await when you take part in a cultural signature white “halibut” hat (it program or simply engage with the many looks a bit like a beret), and ask Tlingit people working at Icy Strait Point him what it was like growing up in and living in the nearby town. such a unique part of the world. Hoonah is easily reached from Icy Strait “When we were kids, we’d go Point via a short wilderness pathway or down to the shore to throw one of the regular bus shuttles during potato peelings into the water, the cruising season. Just don’t come and the halibut would come and expecting a big town, Dybdahl says. “I’ve suck them up,” he says. “We’d had people stop to ask me where the see all kinds of whale traffic town center is and I say, ‘You just drove in and out of the bay of Port through it,’” he laughs. And, the Tlingit people have a special relationship with “We never had to put up a sign there that says, ‘Go Skip Rocks,’” the animals. says Dybdahl, “It’s in everyone’s DNA, they see a flat rock and skip it.” “When I grew up, the (Tlingit) women were out there picking berries right alongside the bears and talking to the bears to tell The beach, he says, is a “high energy” one. them what they were there for,” he says. “People believed that if “We get a lot of southwest wind that blows down the bay, so you just told the bear what you were there for, you’d be fine.” the rocks are weathered and smooth,” says Dybdahl, “We don’t Among the many oral stories passed down by the Tlingit is one mind how many rocks you throw because in the winter they get about Bear Bay, the former name of Port Frederick, which lies washed right back onto the beach.” inside the Inside Passage. SPRUCE TIPS & ALDER SMOKE SAMPLING LOCAL CRAFT BEERS IN JUNEAU, ALASKA

There’s nothing small about Juneau, Alaska. As the sprawling Due to these and other challenges, only around 32,000 capitol of our most remote and rugged state, Juneau ranks people reside within Juneau’s 3,255 square miles — not quite as America’s second-largest city by overall area. This being Alaska, there’s a lot more land than there are BEER, BEER, BEER, BEER… people inhabiting it. It takes a tough person to call Juneau home; there are exactly zero roads connecting the city to the While Juneau may be less than jam packed with year-round rest of Alaska. Downtown Juneau itself sits at sea level, while people, it’s certainly not lacking breweries or craft beers to mountains ascend 3,500 feet above it. From year-round staples like white beers and stouts to seasonal offerings like pumpkin ale or limited editions like the jalapeño double IPA, ABC offers a wealth of options for beer lovers of every type and stripe.

BEYOND ABC… Juneau takes its name from Quebec-born gold prospector Joe Juneau, but its more recent wave of prospectors involve something closer to liquid gold.

Alaska is immersed in a full-blown “beer boom,” thanks to a strong surge in breweries, microbrew and craft beer production. A visit to historic downtown Juneau quickly confirms this, as breweries and tasting rooms can be found at seemingly every turn. It’s not just Juneau, either. Alaskan cities like Anchorage, Fairbanks and Wasilla — along with smaller communities like Homer, Skagway, Seward and Sitka — are all home to a budding and brewing new “gold rush.”

According to the 2015 Brewers Association’s State Craft Beer Sales & Production, Alaska is now home to 27 craft breweries — good enough to rank the state 35th nationally in that department. Want a more impressive statistic? How about 5.3 breweries for every 100,000 Alaskans — the eighth-highest such penetration in America. Or, 12.7 gallons of beer per capita, good enough for fourth-best nationally.

And, when you’re in Juneau, you can enjoy everything ABC has to offer. Along with much, much more.

Another outstanding option is Devil’s Club Brewing Company. Located on Franklin Street, the Devil’s Club kitchen and taproom are open daily from 11am until 8pm. Offering contemporary American styles and modern takes on traditional Belgian beers, the taproom proudly serves up brews like Spruce Springsteen Spruce Tip Blonde, Country Fields Sour Blackberry Saison and their Signature IPA.

Jefferson Randolph Smith became better known as Soapy Smith, a notorious con artist who generously contributed to the reputation of the Wild West during the early 19th century. When the Civil War changed prosperity for his initially wealthy family from Georgia, they relocated to Round Rock, Texas. Briefly entering the world of cowboys, he found he was not one for laborious work, instead finding his niche in swindling unsuspecting victims to line his pockets, a trade he would develop and fine tune to become the most infamous bunco artist of his time. 62 SALMON EN CROUTE WITH CREAMY TARRAGON MUSTARD SAUCE serves 4

SAUCE SALMON Kosher salt and freshly 1 cup crème fraîche ¼ cup butter ground black pepper 2 tablespoons heavy 1 cup minced mixed wild 2 sheets puff pastry, cream mushrooms thawed 2 tablespoons tarragon ¼ cup minced shallots 40 baby spinach leaves mustard ¼ cup dry white wine 4 (5- to 6-ounce) skinless salmon fillets Kosher salt and freshly 1 tablespoon crème ground white pepper fraîche 2 egg whites 1 tablespoon tarragon mustard

MAKE THE SAUCE

In a medium bowl, combine the crème fraîche, cream and mustard and mix well. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

PREPARE THE SALMON

In a large sauté pan over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the mushrooms and shallots and sauté until softened. Increase the heat to medium-high. When the mixture is lightly caramelized, add the wine and stir to deglaze the pan. When the alcohol has completely evaporated, remove the pan from the heat and stir in the crème fraîche and mustard. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Reserve.

Preheat the oven to 400°F/204°C. Line a sheet pan with parchment paper. Cut each sheet of puff pastry into 4 rectangles, rolling out the dough if needed to create rectangles 1 to 2 inches longer and wider than the salmon fillets. Layer 10 spinach leaves, shingle style, in a row in the center of each of 4 rectangles. Top each with a salmon fillet and one-fourth of the mushroom mixture. Top each with another rectangle and crimp the edges to seal.

Place on the prepared pan and brush with the egg white. Use a knife to make 3 small slits in the top of each pastry package. Bake until golden brown, about 15 minutes. Let rest for 5 minutes and serve warm with the sauce on the side.

PORT GOLF ROYAL COURSE REVIEW JON SHERMAN

Last fall I got a chance to play Port Royal in Southampton, Bermuda at the Goslings Invitational tournament. I quickly fell in love with the views and layout, and it’s easily become one of my favorite golf courses that I’ve ever played.

While Bermuda was never on my golf map before this trip, I’m more than happy to get the word out there because more golfers should consider this golf course in their travel plans.

BERMUDA’S GOLF CROWN JEWEL

Most golfers don’t know it, but Bermuda is an amazing golf destination. Just a short flight from most East Coast airports, it should get more attention than it does.

Golfers can choose from Port Royal, Turtle Hill, Belmont Hills, Ocean View, and Tucker’s Point. Port Royal and Mid Ocean Club are the two most acclaimed courses on the island, but since Port Royal is a fully public course, it is usually the top choice for visitors to the island. As a side note, despite Mid Ocean Club being fully private, the staff at Cambridge Beaches Resort & Spa (where I stayed) can get you on there.

66 Port Royal Golf Club hosted the PGA Grand Slam from 2009 to 2014. This brought the course (and the island) plenty of attention THERE AREN’T from golfers since they were able to watch the winners of each major championship compete on its stunning layout. MANY GOLF

Recently, the PGA Tour announced The Bermuda Championship. Starting in the fall COURSES IN of 2019 Port Royal will host a yearly PGA Tour event from October 31 through THE WORLD November 3. After playing several rounds at Port Royal WITH THIS during my week at the Goslings Invitational tournament, I’m here to tell you that this is a must-play destination. If you are planning KIND OF VIEW a golf trip it should definitely be on your radar. This was my second trip to Bermuda and it’s far and away one of my favorite vacation destinations.

A TON OF STRATEGIC DECISIONS

After playing Port Royal several times and thinking about the layout of each hole, the course does a great job of testing your decision-making. Robert Trent Jones first designed the course in 1970, and in 2009 it was renovated by Robert Rulewich as part of a $16 million project.

In my opinion, it’s more of a tee shot course. I have never found myself in as many fairway bunkers as I did in my rounds there. On almost every par 4 or par 5 there are bunkers staggered in such a way that it will make you think twice about your target and club selection. There are plenty of landing areas that are pinched by bunkers and are ready to collect your slightly errant tee shots.

Additionally, several holes have some sneaky, difficult trouble that you might not be aware of if you have never played the course before. For example, on 14 if you hit your tee shot up the left side, trees block your direct view of the green. But if you cheat too much to the right, you’ll be greeted by a large bunker and some trees. continue...

The tee shot on the dog-leg right 15th might be the most of the ocean on the 7th green and 8th tee box. The course difficult. Two large bunkers guard the left side, and if you becomes dramatically more beautiful at this point because go too far to the right you will lose your ball in some native the ocean is in full view. However, this is where the wind bushes. Plenty of players posted big numbers on this hole can really show its teeth. during the tournament. Ignorance was bliss the first time I played the 15th because from the tee it tricks you into As you make your way up the 9th hole you start to realize thinking the landing area is more manageable than just what a special piece of land you are on. For the rest of it really is. the round, you are treated to beautiful views of Bermuda’s light-blue ocean. My view from the top reminded me of On iron shots, I found myself second-guessing club rounds I played in Hawaii. Simply put, Port Royal is one of selections due to the elevation changes and wind the most visually stunning courses I have ever played, and conditions. None is more challenging than the par-3 16th, I think you’ll feel the same way. which is Port Royal’s signature hole. When you first arrive, you can’t help but admire the beauty of the hole, but when Things come full circle when you tee off on the 16th hole. you get on the tee box things change quickly. In both of There aren’t many golf courses in the world with this kind our rounds, it was a swirling wind off the water, which had of view, and it reminded me of my out-of-body experience me pulling out three clubs. You can’t help but want to bail earlier this year at the 16th at Cabot Cliffs in Canada. out to the right, which can leave a terrifying bunker shot towards the ocean, or an extremely downhill pitch shot If you are traveling to Bermuda, Port Royal has to be on off the Bermuda grass. On both days I was able to leave the top of your list. It’s the best fully public course the my shots to the short-right side of the green for easy island has to offer and consistently ranked amongst the up and downs. best in the world. My hope is to be back soon!

Overall, the wind, bunkering, and elevation changes are Jon Sherman is the owner of Practical-Golf.com, a website dedicated to being an honest resource for the everyday golfer who is looking to the courses main defense. I had so much fun playing enjoy the game more, as well as improve. This article first appeared Port Royal because there was so much variety from one on Practical-Golf.com. He is also the author of the bestselling book hole to the next. While I would consider it a challenging 101 Mistakes All Golfers Make (and how to fix them). course, it’s also very playable for golfers of all levels because there are fairly wide landing areas off the tee. It’s a fair, interesting test of golf.

WHAT A BEAUTIFUL RIDE

Port Royal is almost two golf courses rolled into one. The clubhouse is perched on the highest point of the course and serves as a dividing point between most of the front nine and the back. Your tee shot off the first brings you down a steep elevation change as you head away from the ocean. The first seven holes are partially guarded against the sea’s wind as you meander through a lush low point. Trees guard most of the holes earlier on, and it gives the appearance of a tropical inland golf course.

As you make your way on the par-5 7th hole, conditions abruptly change both visually and with the wind. You are no longer protected by the hills, and you get a clear view

the light of halifax BY MARI ARMAS Mother Nature surely puts on a show in these parts. Local Nova Scotians are accustomed to a life alongside rugged coastlines, colorful fishing towns, rolling green hills and sparkling waters. Its capital, Halifax, not only encompasses this beautiful scenery, but her Haligonians (Halifax locals) are also quick to show her off to you.

“Peggy’s Point. You have to go there first.” Those were the opening lines of an email from Steve, a friend from Halifax, replying to my request for his recommendations. There was more to his email, of course, but I took the urgency of his tone very seriously. Visiting Peggy’s Point Lighthouse was in fact the very first thing on my agenda, and I’m so glad it was.

Under a blueish-grey sky, I headed out on the Lighthouse Route, a forty-minute car ride that was anything but boring. It was as if every colorful building, lobster trap, net, fishing rod, boat, and buoy I saw along the way was perfectly staged for a photo shoot. As we drove along the South Shore, there were several lighthouses we could’ve stopped at (like Fort Point and Cape Forchu), but following Steve’s strict orders, we were determined to make Peggy’s my first.

Along the way, my guide peppered me with incredible facts about this icon, like it’s one of the most photographed sites in the country and that the gleaming whitewashed lighthouse sits on impressive rock formations left by eroding glaciers millions of years ago. I learned that the village surrounding the lighthouse is home to nearly 40 people and that it was likely named Peggy’s as a nickname for Saint Margaret’s Bay, but there was a popular local legend that pegged Peggy as the sole survivor of a shipwreck.

But, even armed with all of that information, there was nothing to prepare me for the awe of standing before the stately lighthouse that has been an inspiration for artists and writers for generations.

74 “every corner of this village has a story to tell.”

75 halifax

I stood on those rocks for quite some time, overlooking the crashing surf that was glistening under a sky that had miraculously cleared up to turn pure blue. I watched an artist attempt to capture the spectacle of the place on his canvas. And then I too, like so many before me, snapped a photo of the lighthouse.

History vs. Folklore It’s hard to believe that the first lighthouse at Peggy’s Cove was nothing more than a small wooden house with a beacon on the roof. It was not for another 50 years, in 1914, when the current 49-foot lighthouse was built on the hamlet. The original wooden lighthouse then became the keeper’s home until it was damaged by Hurricane Edna in 1954 and was removed. The gleaming red and white tower even played a crucial role during World War II, as it was used by the Royal Canadian Navy as a radio station.

Adding a bit of local lore to the history of this iconic lighthouse is the Peggy of the Cove Museum. Gentleman

Ivan Fraser, local artist and storyteller created this tribute to the local legend of how Peggy’s Cove got its name. Based on the story Keith written by William deGarthe, the folktale says that a schooner was shipwrecked on Halibut Rock, just off the point on which the famous lighthouse sits, and its only survivor was a young woman After your adventure on the Lighthouse Route, named Margaret. 78 québec city to remember in Québec CityBY TERRY WARD

From springtime into the autumn months — anytime the weather is at its best for being outdoors — the people of Québec City capitalize by spending as much time as possible outside, enjoying their gorgeous city.

That’s when you’ll find them provisioning forpique-niques (or picnics, if you prefer) at the city’s markets and artisan food shops, putting together an impromptu spread to enjoy at one of the many beautiful spots around town. They have it down to an art form.

If you’ve got some hours to spare during a visit in this stunning old city, there’s perhaps no more authentique way to live like a Québec City local than by planning your own alfresco picnic to enjoy alongside the city’s residents.

PUTTING TOGETHER THE PERFECT FRENCH-STYLE SPREAD

First things first. For the ultimate picnic in Québec City, it all begins with the food. You hardly require a picnic basket (everything can be tossed into your backpack or reusable grocery bag), but you do need tasty ingredients for a French-Canadian meal to remember. And, this is a city that eats well, even at its most casual.

You can find everything for a satisfying lunch at any city grocery store chain, like L’intermarché or IGA. But it’s fun to make more of an occasion of it and dive into some truly local products celebrating Québec’s rich culinary heritage by visiting specialty grocers and bakers.

For a typical Québec City boulangerie, head just a few blocks away in the same neighborhood to Le Paingrüel, an artisan bakery tucked inside a red-brick building where the display overflows with delicious sourdoughs, classic baguettes and loaves made from organic wheat.

PICK YOUR PIQUE-NIQUE LOCALE
