    Chapter 3: Research Methodology Within broader contours of communication studies, media and journalism studies is developing rapidly. Many aspects of media from the impact of advanced technologies to emerging new practices of journalism are being probed by both the professionals and the academia. As stated earlier, media convergence and multimedia journalism have become central points of this growing research. Lot of work is carried out on these topics in USA and the European countries. As evident by the review of the existing scholarship, there is not much research on these trends in India. Especially, the research in regional language media settings in India is missing. This research 'Critical Study of Multimedia Journalism and Media Convergence in Indian Context' is an effort to fill this void. 3.1 Exploratory Research Design A research design is an outline for conducting a study and provides direction to it. It is considered as a blue print for collection, measurement and analysis of data for the research. Since there are many models of media convergence and practices of multimedia journalism are still evolving, this researcher has used the exploratory design for this study. Exploratory research is normally conducted to tackle new problems which may not have been clearly defined and the phenomena are still evolving. There is little or no significant research available related to them. This explores the research topic to varying levels of depth and helps to gain better understanding of the problem. Exploratory research may not offer conclusive solutions to the existing problems but it lays a foundation for future studies. This research on multimedia journalism and media convergence in Indian context will be valuable in this respect.

One major concern for a developing country like India is creating suitable employment opportunities and training for skill development to all citizens. ‘Make in India’ is an initiative of the government to encourage multinational, as well as domestic, companies to manufacture their products in India, the major objective behind it is to focus on job creation and skill enhancement in twenty-five sectors of the economy. In order to fulfill this national initiative, it is important for all employable citizens of the country to understand how the scheme works and how the know-how to be industry ready while implementing the scheme. This knowledge transfer could be achieved only when the government takes all initiatives to spread the awareness to the employable citizens. This paper takes a qualitative content approach to investigate how government has used the regional newspapers of Tamil Nadu to transfer the idea behind ‘Make in India’ scheme work for the betterment of the country. The advent of satellite televisions and social media could not change the daily routine of newspaper reading. Leading Malayalam dailies have introduced mobile phone apps to extend their presence among mobile phone users. Introduction Kerala people became very fond of newspaper reading many decades back. High literacy level and public library movement have influenced the reading habit of Kerala people. Indian Readership Survey 2017 says that about 60% of the Kerala population reads newspapers. Newspaper readership at the national level is about 16.5% (Media Research Users Council, ​ 2018). “From literacy to political consciousness, urban dominance, history, sociology, ​ demography and even geography – it all plays a role" (Cris, 2018) Kerala people love ​ newspaper reading. Kerala has good statewide coverage of broadband and mobile phone. As per the CyberMedia Research report, Kerala leads among other states in mobile phone penetration with 65% (Thomas, 2018). The popularity of mobile phone and Internet have ​ ​ influenced the social life of Kerala people. Social media and mobile phones have played a great role in coordinating relief operations in flood-affected Kerala in 2018 (Thiagarajan, 2018).

Citizens are given the right to votes for one particular political candidate they like and bring them to power. The voting behavior has drastically changed over years due to the influence of media. Elections go a long way in making a democracy successful; they reflect political culture and people’s political behavior. Elections are intellectual exercise that helps people to remain vigilant of the activities of the government. Democracy is about the power of citizen however; the powerful media has changed the way information is given to the public during an election. Instead of providing right information to voters and marshaling change, the press has taken the role of an influencer. This study compares and analyses the news coverage of Rajya Sabha election 2020 campaigns in two leading newspapers in Bangalore during the pre-election session. The study will also focus on the amount of space allotted for election coverage. The content analysis of this publication will be analyzed to check if any publication is biased towards a particular political candidate or a party or if it is giving any excessive information either by news coverage or photographs.

As it has got its most important status in the world’s media to popularize the newspaper, there is a distinct lack of comparative research on the media coverage of sports. To minimize the gap, this search draws attention on sports coverage during the London Olympics, 2012 from three different newspapers of different languages. The coverages were recorded considering the preview, competition and review phases. The results show that the total coverage of the English newspaper, the Telegraph (36039 sq. cm.) was more than the other two Bengali and Hindi newspapers (9224 sq. cm. and 2599 sq. cm. respectively). The female performers got more attention (34942 sq. cm.) than the male performers (12920 sq. cm.). All the three newspapers provided maximum coverage in the competition phase rather than the other two phases. The English newspaper provided more attention in preview of the main competition also in comparison to the other two newspapers. It has concluded that the coverage of the print media depends mainly on the performance of the athletes, popularity of the performers and intensity of the competition.

Even as the new media continue to grow in leaps and bounds, the traditional print medium is not far behind. Very interesting, fulfilling and financially lucrative career options are available to young people in the field of Mass Communication. While the focus of Mass Communication education remains on Journalism, the other attractive career options that open up are in the areas of Advertising, Public Relations/ Corporate Communications and New Media (including Social Media). As for the entertainment industry, there are courses to train people in TV and Radio anchoring, reporting, editing, directing, shooting (camera persons) and such other specialized jobs for which skilled people are in great demand. History Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University could well claim to be a pioneer in mass communication education in India, for offering the first structured and well-planned journalism course after the country won freedom in 1947. It was to the credit of Hislop college, Nagpur and its then Principal, the Late Dr.D G Moses, who established a full fledged Department of Journalism with the approval and encouragement of Nagpur University in 1952-53. Prof. K E Eapen was the first Indian scholar to be the head of the department. The begining was made with a diploma course in Journalism, which was later elevated to the degree level in the mid sixties.

    What is Magazine? The Word Magazine is coined by the Edward Cave. It is derived from Arabic word ‘makhazin’ which means storehouse- all bundled together in one package. A magazine can be explained as a periodical that contains a variety of articles as well as illustrations, which are of entertaining, promotional and instructive nature. It generally contains essays, stories, poems, articles, fiction, recipes, images etc. and offers a more comprehensive, in-depth coverage and analysis of subject than newspapers. Most of magazines generally cover featured articles on various topics. Magazines are typically published weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, bi-monthly or quarterly. They are often printed in colour on coated paper and are bound with a soft cover. In a simple, we can say that ‘the better the visual narrative of the magazine, the more it will appeal to its specific audience’. The publisher’s purpose for a magazine is to give its advertisers a chance to share with its readers about their products. Magazine Journalism Magazine Journalism uses the similar tools as traditional journalism tools used for gathering information, background research and writing to produce articles for consumer and trade magazines. The cover story is the beacon in any magazine. The cover page quite often carries stunning headlines to facilitate a compulsive buying of the magazine. Vanitha : An Indian Magazine Vanitha is an Indian magazine published fortnightly by the Malayala Manorama group. Vanitha in Malayalam means woman. It was launched in 1975 as a monthly and later become fortnightly in 1987. Its Hindi edition was launched in 1997.
