Minority Media and Community Agenda Setting A Study On Muslim Press In Kerala Muhammadali Nelliyullathil, Ph.D. Dean, Faculty of Journalism and Head, Dept. of Mass Communication University of Calicut, Kerala India Abstract Unlike their counterparts elsewhere in the country, Muslim newspapers in Kerala are highly professional in staffing, payment, and news management and production technology and they enjoy 35 percent of the newspaper readership in Kerala. They are published in Malayalam when Indian Muslim Press outside Kerala concentrates on Urdu journalism. And, most of these newspapers have a promising newsroom diversity employing Muslim and non-Muslim women, Dalits and professionals from minority and majority religions. However, how effective are these newspapers in forming public opinion among community members and setting agendas for community issues in public sphere? The study, which is centered on this fundamental question and based on the conceptual framework of agenda setting theory and functional perspective of minority media, examines the role of Muslim newspapers in Kerala in forming a politically vibrant, progress oriented, Muslim community in Kerala, bringing a collective Muslim public opinion into being, Influencing non-Muslim media programming on Muslim issues and influencing the policy agenda of the Government on Muslim issues. The results provide empirical evidences to support the fact that news selection and presentation preferences and strategies of Muslim newspapers in Kerala are in line with Muslim communities’ news consumption pattern and related dynamics. Similarly, Muslim public’s perception of community issues are formed in accordance with the news framing and priming by Muslim newspapers in Kerala. The findings trigger more justifications for micro level analysis of the functioning of the Muslim press in Kerala to explore the community variable in agenda setting schema and the significance of minority press in democratic political context. -

What is Magazine? The Word Magazine is coined by the Edward Cave. It is derived from Arabic word ‘makhazin’ which means storehouse- all bundled together in one package. A magazine can be explained as a periodical that contains a variety of articles as well as illustrations, which are of entertaining, promotional and instructive nature. It generally contains essays, stories, poems, articles, fiction, recipes, images etc. and offers a more comprehensive, in-depth coverage and analysis of subject than newspapers. Most of magazines generally cover featured articles on various topics. Magazines are typically published weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, bi-monthly or quarterly. They are often printed in colour on coated paper and are bound with a soft cover. In a simple, we can say that ‘the better the visual narrative of the magazine, the more it will appeal to its specific audience’. The publisher’s purpose for a magazine is to give its advertisers a chance to share with its readers about their products. Magazine Journalism Magazine Journalism uses the similar tools as traditional journalism tools used for gathering information, background research and writing to produce articles for consumer and trade magazines. The cover story is the beacon in any magazine. The cover page quite often carries stunning headlines to facilitate a compulsive buying of the magazine. Vanitha : An Indian Magazine Vanitha is an Indian magazine published fortnightly by the Malayala Manorama group. Vanitha in Malayalam means woman. It was launched in 1975 as a monthly and later become fortnightly in 1987. Its Hindi edition was launched in 1997. It has a readership of over 3.7 million, making it fifth highest read magazine in India. -

Signed: Date: iii Abstract by Prateek Sibal School of Public Affairs Sciences Po Paris Freedom of the press is inextricably linked to the economics of news media busi- ness. Many media organizations rely on advertisements as their main source of revenue, making them vulnerable to interference from advertisers. In India, the Government is a major advertiser in newspapers. Interviews with journalists sug- gest that governments in India actively interfere in working of the press, through both economic blackmail and misuse of regulation. However, it is difficult to gauge the media bias that results due to government pressure. This paper determines a newspaper's bias based on the change in advertising spend share per newspa- per before and after 2014 general election. -

The current economic and political situation in India: perspectives from senior Indian editors Thursday 13 February 2014 10 – 11.30am Seminar Room B HC Coombs Building 9, Fellows Road, ANU After ten years of Congress-led United Progressive Alliance rule parliamentary elections are due in India in April/May 2014. Against this background the Australia South Asia Research Centre (ASARC) is hosting a panel discussion with four senior influential newspaper editors from India. They will be speaking on the current economic and political situation in their country. Jaideep Bose is Editorial Director of the Times of India group. Based in Mumbai, Bose heads the newspaper’s operations across 32 editions located in major cities and smaller towns. With a circulation of approximately five million, and a readership close to 30 million, The Times of India is the country’s largest circulating national newspaper. Bose has had an impressive career record and was one of India’s youngest editors when he took over as Executive Editor of The Times of India in 2004. He also holds positions on the boards of Times NOW, the group’s television news channel, as well as in several other group companies. He was instrumental in launching the newspaper chain’s civil society campaigns, India Poised, Lead India and the Teach India initiatives. Bose began his career with The Telegraph newspaper in Kolkata. He was Executive Editor of The Economic Times when he moved to The Times of India. Bose holds a bachelor’s degree in Economics from Jadavpur University, Kolkata. Anil Padmanabhan is Deputy Managing Editor with The Mint newspaper published by the Hindustan Times group in association with The Wall Street Journal. -

The BJP garnered 37.4 per cent, improving from the 31 per cent it registered in 2014. The NDA vote share has gone up from 37.3 per cent to 43.86 per cent in 2019. This constitutes a decisive mandate in their favour. The right wing offensive unleashed by the BJP during the last five years has consolidated with this mandate. Most opposition parties barring those from Tamilnadu, Andhra Pradesh and a few other states have suffered big reverses in these elections. The CPI(M) and the Left have suffered a severe setback in these elections particularly in their strongholds of Kerala, West Bengal and Tripura. The CPI(M)’s declining presence in the Lok Sabha that the Central Committee has been noting since the 2009 election continues and the Party has now registered its lowest presence in the Lok Sabha till date. In terms of vote share, the decline of CPI(M)’s electoral performance began much earlier. In 1989, we had 6.6 per cent vote share. It declined to 3.2 per cent in 2014. -

Sainath t Newspapers have become products like any other consumer, industrial or service products. They have unique features which other products do not have. The newspaper industry in India is witnessing intense competition from within and from outside like electronic and internet media. This has tremendous bearing on circulation and advertisement revenues. The industry has responded proactively to these challenges. There is more and more focus on marketing and innovations in marketing strategies. Reviews of some of these strategies are focused in the paper. The authors have presented a case study of TIMES OF INDIA GROUP for innovations in marketing strategies, which are product, price, promotion and distribution related. A survey has been conducted by the authors on a recent innovation in marketing strategy of TRIMMING and SLIMMING the size of the newspaper. The data collected from 357 readers of Bangalore are analysed. The readers in general are not only positive to these changes but also have observed them keenly. Such understanding of sensitivity of readers is crucial for the success of marketing strategies. Newspapers play a critical role in informing the positive developments, achievements and general public about news and events. Their experiments. Journalism has been the core of views on these would mould the opinions and newspaper in India. Of late, they are emerging attitudes of the people.
