Inside This Issue from the Executive Director SPRING 2013 EDITION Hills & Dales Residents, Challes (left) and Ashly (right) are proud members of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville Pioneer Sparkles cheer team. This team (first in the nation at the collegiate-level) is a group of children and young adults age 11-21 with special needs and disabilities from the Tri-State area and is fully integrated with the Pioneer cheer and stunt team. Congratulations Challes and Ashly on your performances and accomplishments through the team! Inside This Issue FROm ThE ExEcuTIvE DIREcTOR . 2 FROm ThE BOARD OF DIREcTORS . 3 REcOGNITION –– From Wishes to Reality . 4-7 hIllS & DAlES hAPPENINGS . 8-11 2 973 013 1 From the Chief Executive Officer A recent seminar hosted by hills & Dales and presented by Dr. Tom Pomeranz, a nationally renowned expert in the field of disabilities, certainly presented an opportunity to pause and think about what the words respect, quality, and person-centered supports can mean for an organization like hills & Dales and for the people who depend on the supports and services we provide to them. The title of this provocative session was “To Boldly Go Where Everyone Else has Gone Before” and it has its roots in the history and evolution of services for people with physical and cognitive disabilities. Our Foundress, Elaine Barwick, knew this 40 years ago that we should never settle for good enough when her option for supports for her son was far away and in a place that was unbearable to consider. She made the change that she marilyn Althoff wished to see, a life that was meaningful for her son, Jamie. cEO I strive today to continue to stretch the minds of the staff, the families and the community members to consider how we embrace, engage, and include people with disabilities. Do we truly provide respect when we fail to recognize a life anchored in our own beliefs may keep us stuck and hold us back from actually fulfilling our mission ? Tom provided us with a number of examples that we will consider to assure we are moving toward better outcomes for people and our agency. As we celebrate our 40 years of building meaning - ful lives we continue to embrace our higher mission and responsibility to transform attitudes and change the hearts and minds of our hills & Dales community. We will strive to value each person respectfully, inclusively, and with a vision and focus from “this is what we have always been”, but rather to “this is what we can be.” ATTENDEE COMMENTS... “You made me realize that I can be doing so much more to improve the quality of the lives of the individuals I support.” – hills & Dales Employee “I was blown away at the depth of his knowledge and experience, and all the ideas he presented. Some of it was painful to hear, but needed to be heard. I learned a lot about how to “respect” people instead of just “accept” and that no person is valued more than any other - no matter our situation or abilities. His passion to right some wrongs is contagious and I hope to make the world a better place for my son and many others.” – Kathy corbett, hills & Dales Parent “Hills & Dales is dedicated to building meaningful lives for individuals with disabilities by offering services that support the whole person and enhance community inclusion.” 2 hills & Dales Happenings From the Board of Directors During my first tour of hills SPRING 2013 EDITION & Dales many years ago before joining the Operations Board and now acting as the © 2013 by hills & Dales Jamie Barwick hills & Dales 1011 Davis Street Foundation President, I was Dubuque, Iowa 52001-1397 phone 563/556-7878 astounded by the compassion fax 563/557-3822 and caring commitment I saw email [email protected] in front of me. From day one doctors did not expect her Al Krueger, Secretary/Treasurer to live long, but she passed at the age of 66 after a MEMBERS-AT-LARGE wonderful and meaningful life because of the supports Greg Adams Joyce connors of my grandparents and an organization similar to hills molly Grover & Dales called Opportunity village in clear lake, Iowa. Tom Kane Throughout my time at the funeral and hearing the many Debra mcGinnis Dan Raduns positive things Opportunity village provided for my aunt Jill Reimer (which I have known for a long time), my thoughts and mike Ruden Tom Sarvis feelings never strayed far from hills & Dales and the Keith Sindberg role it plays in so many people’s lives here in Dubuque John Tallent and the surrounding area. It may not always be a Jamie Barwick glamorous job, but this organization and the staff truly Hills & Dales Foundation do great work to help people reach their full potential.
