HOCKEY 101

A BASIC HOCKEY GAME There are three 20 minute periods in a hockey game, with two 17-minute intermissions between the fi rst and second period and the second and third period. Each team can dress 22 players (20 skaters and 2 goalies). There are not ties in hockey. During the regular season, teams play a 7 minute sudden death overtime if the game ends tied after 3 periods.

If neither team scores during overtime, the teams will compete in a shootout. Each team takes alternating turns shooting at the goal. The team with the most shootout goals after 3 players per shot is the winner.

The average ice time per game, per player is approximately 18 minutes. Teams skate full strength (with 5 players defending or scoring) except in specifi c cases such as when a penalty is called, pulling a goalie (to add a sixth skater), or during overtime (When there are only four players scoring or defending on each team).

Hockey penalties Below are some common offi cial calls that hockey offi cials make during a game. These signals are also used in roller (inline) hockey and they can even be heard in everyday language. After reviewing the call description and signal, use the word in the non-hockey related sentence. See if you can spot the number of times each call is made during the game today.

CHARGING - taking a run at an opposing player using more than three strides to build up speed. SLASHING - striking an opposing player with the stick ELBOWING - called when a player uses an elbow to impede an opponent. HOLDING - clutching an opposing playerʼs body with the hands, arms, or legs HOOKING - The use of the stick or blade to impede the progress of an opponent. INTERFERENCE - when a player impedes the progress of an opponent who is not in possession of the puck.

Two basic rules of hockey

Icing: occurs when an attacking (offense) player shoots the puck across the red center line and the opposing goal line untouched by the opposing (defense) team. If the attacking team (offense) is shorthanded (one man fewer) or the defending teamʼs goalie touched the puck, icing does not occur.

Offsides: if you are skating towards the goal at which you are shooting, and cross the blue line closest to the goal before the puck crosses that line, you will be called for off-sides once you touch the puck. Two basic rules of hockey • Once the ice is frozen and ready for the players, maintaining the top layer in good condition is important. The ice -resurfacer, often called a Zamboni (after Frank J. Icing: occurs when an attacking (offense) player shoots the puck Zamboni, the inventor of the fi rst ice resurfacer machine), is driven over the ice. It across the red center line and the opposing goal line untouched by scrapes off and collects the snowy ice chips while applying a thing layer of water to coat the opposing (defense) team. If the attacking team (offense) is the ice and even it out. shorthanded (one man fewer) or the defending teamʼs goalie touched the puck, icing does not occur.

Offsides: if you are skating towards the goal at which you are shooting, and cross the blue line closest to the goal before the puck crosses that line, you will be called for off-sides once you touch the puck. FYI: To take some of the bounce out of a rubber puck for a game, it’s frozen beforehand, and even kept frozen between periods. Most substances behave similarly when heated or cooled. Adding heat to a system (the puck) is essentially the same as adding more energy to it; if the puck is storing more energy it will bounce higher.
