SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 15 7:30PM DURHAM HALL ALEY FINE ARTS CENTER CASPER COLLEGE

Andre Bohren is a lifelong musician. From early obsessions with Peruvian flutes and ʼ50ʼs Rock ʻnʼ Roll to his discovery of classical piano and syncopated funk, Andre is constantly broadening his musical horizons. At the age of 16, he performed Gershwinʼs Rhapsody In Blue with the Wyoming Symphony Orchestra as the featured piano soloist and was soon touring the U.S. and Europe with his father, American roots musician Spencer Bohren.

After a decade of near complete focus on piano, which in- cluded 5 years of study under Dr. Janet Ahlquist and 2 years under Dr. John Murphy at Loyola University in New Or- leans, Andre founded the eclectic funk-rock band Johnny Sketch and the Dirty Notes (JSDN), this time manning the drum chair. Composition and percussion drove Andre for the next 10 years while JSDN toured the country extensively, bringing his music to such renowned stages as Red Rocks Amphitheater, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, and New York Cityʼs Knitting Factory.

Having recently revisited his love of the classical piano rep- ertoire, Andre looks forward to delving once again into the world of piano and sharing the extensive knowledge he has gained through 25 years of musical experience.

Rob Verdi received his music education degree in 1984 from Arizona State University. While at ASU, Rob stud- ied classical saxophone and participated in a variety of perfor- mance groups, including jazz ensembles, the Phoenix Saxo- phone Quartet and the Phoenix Symphony. Several honors included the Miles Dreskill Orchestra Award, Outstanding Graduate of the Fine Arts Department, and being selected to the Walt Disney World All-American College Band. Rob is currently a member of the California Arts Council and active clinician for Disney’s Magic Music Days Program.

Rob’s professional jazz group, the Side Street Strutters, ac- cepted a full time position with the Disney Entertainment Division in 1985. With his passion for saxophone history, Rob has accrued an impressive collection of rare and unique saxophones. Saxophobia, Rob’s latest creative endeavor, ven- tures into the little-known world of some of the most unusual saxophones ever manufactured and pays homage to the great jazz performers who embraced the instrument.

Saxophobia brings to the stage a “Who’s Who” of sax gone wild! Audience members will see and hear a sopranino—the smallest saxophone in the world; a mammoth six-and-one- half-foot contrabass sax; and virtually everything in between. Other examples include straight alto, straight tenor, C-melody, Grafton all-plastic, Conn-O-Sax, slide and bass saxophones, and even an original 1880 Adolphe Sax tenor.

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 7 7:30 PM KELLY WALSH HIGH SCHOOL AUDITORIUM Mick Bolger Colcannon’s Christmas show is a relaxed and wry look at the season we all love. No bright lights and production numbers here - intead this show features traditional music, prose and poetry both silly and serious from writers such as Ogden Nash and T.S. Eliot, and some won- derful lesser known Christmas songs.

Mick Bolger is becoming increasingly recognized as a leading interpret- er of traditional Irish song. He sings in both English and his native Irish (Gaelic), bringing an emotional directness and surprising depth to his ma- terial. He also plays the bodhrán (the Irish goatskin drum) and his stories and unexpected flights of humor keep audiences intrigued. Mike Fitzmaurice Mike Fitzmaurice earned a degree in painting before becoming involved in music. Mike’s bass playing is unique in the traditional music scene, with the instrument often stepping up as an equal voice in the melodic texture. He is also a skilled composer, and has written two full-scale works for Colcan- non and symphony, “The Red Kite” and “Lusanna”.

A fiddler of both power and finesse, Jean Bolger began playing violin at the age of six. A later convert to Irish fiddle, she brings great control to her fiery playing and a firm delicacy to her subtle, nuanced accompaniments. Jean is also a prolific composer, and once wrote a new tune every day for a year. Jean Bolger

Brian Mullins originally joined Colcannon as a guitarist and mandolin player in 1994. His inventive rhythmic accompaniments are a defining aspect of the group’s sound. He also plays mandocello, cittern, erhu (Chi- nese spike fiddle) and flute, and his collection of odd instruments is an ev- er-growing phenomenon. Brian is a prolific composer and has performed and recorded with more projects than we can list.

Colcannon’s newest member, Cynthia Jaffe entered the Celtic music scene since 2002, in the Colorado-based trio “County Boulder.” Long intrigued by world music, she studied classical Indian music at Wesleyan Univer- Cynthia Jaffe sity’s World Music Program and in Madras, India.

68 | artcore | 2012-2013 JALAN CROSSLAND champion guitarist

Friday, JANUARY 11 7:30 PM JOHN F. WELSH AUDITORIUM, NATRONA COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL

Raised in a small Wyoming town, Jalan Crossland is one of a very few “alt country” artists his age who still claims the “country” as home. Maybe this explains the lyrical, ‘truth is stranger than fiction’ wobble to his songs about 21st cen- tury rural life. Live and on recordings he adds dazzling gui- tar and banjo fingerpicking to his kanky tales of hobos, tires, “mobile homes”, strippers, motor- cycles, trucks, cars, vice presidents and methamphetamines (“Drugs are bad” says Jalan).

Jalan has been touring both solo and with a band for ten years, but his musical upbringing is of course longer, and more sor- did. Though the guitar spends a lot of time in Jalan’s hands these days, the first stringed entity that caught his young eye and ear was the banjo, his uncle Dan figuring prominently in this. Despite this banjo affliction, Jalan somehow survived his Wyoming Teenage Boy Instinct for Self-Destruction well enough, to emerge in his twenties playing electric guitar for money on the road. All big hair playing a whammy-bar Ibanez Firebird copy, “in Iron Maiden wannabe bands.”

But the ‘country’ was and is always with him. Later Jalan’s metal phase gave way, to touring with honky-tonk country bands as a hired gun. He moved to solo status in the late 1900s, which is also when he began crafting his strange, new- old-timey tales of sagebrush and asphalt. While building his reputation as a solo artist, Jalan spent a lot of time at home in Tensleep, Wyoming (pop. 300) either by the woodstove or on the porch, picking and picking and picking, becoming a roots music virtuoso. True to his slacker past, Jalan managed a mere second place finish in the 1997 Winfield National Guitar Fingerpicking competition.

His new album, Portrait of a Fish, is a solo project in the pur- est sense – just Jalan with his guitar and banjoes in the studio. In support of the new album, he’s playing all his concerts this touring season as solo performances.

Timeless songs and great musicianship transport the audience to another time and place. Colcannon is equally at home on the stage at a folk music festival or per- forming with a symphony orchestra.

Colcannon has developed a distinctive, inventive, and contemporary musical style while still keep- ing in firm touch with the heart and essence of traditional Irish music. Colcannon’s concerts are renowned for their energy, for singer/frontman Mick Bolger’s irrepressible sense of humor and sly wit, and, of course, for the music; music that expresses flights of joy, deep sorrows, and an un- quenchable zest for life.

The band formed in 1984 in Boulder Colorado, USA, and their reputation has grown steadily over the years with the release of eight CDs on the Oxford Road Records label. The band’s CD ‘The Pooka and the Fiddler’ received a Parent’s Choice Award for its artful interweaving of music and storytelling. The Emmy®-award winning PBS special, “Colcannon in Concert,” filmed at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts has aired nationwide. In concert, these award winning musicians delve into music from Pink Floyd and Rush to Vivaldi, and House of the Rising Sun, as well as their own origi- nals that have been featured everywhere from NPR to the Travel Channel. Montana Skies seemingly non-stop tour schedule has taken them all across the US as well as to Canada, Asia, and Rus- sia; and their dedication to their musical vision has helped them build an enthusiastic grassroots fan base along the way. Combin- ing elements of classical technique, jazz improv and the power and energy of rock n’ roll; Jonathan’s guitar wizardry and Jenn’s blazing electric cello combine to create a sound that is truly re- markable. While the music defies simple categorization, it is a fu- sion in the truest sense of the word. It’s been called everything from chamber rock to psychedelic strings. Whatever you want to call it, rest assured, this ain’t your grannies chamber music.

Jonathan and Jennifer met while studying music at the University of Georgia, in Athens, GA. Recognizing a kindred spirit in each other’s devotion to their music, the desire to share music together Montana was ignited immediately. The two assumed they would be per- skies forming classical recitals and great works for the cello and guitar; then, in one trip to the library to select music, their whole world of classical intentions came crashing down. Jonathan explains, “The fact that ‘ready made’ repertoire is not available for our combination of instruments is really what pushes us to be more creative with our music. We love composing and arranging, and appreciate the opportunity to present old favorites, along with newer music, to our audiences.”

Jonathan’s full length instructional book and CD, “Getting Into Fingerstyle Guitar” was published in 2002 by Mel-Bay Publica- tions. Additional publications are in-the-works.
