El Consejo Universitario de la Universidad de Costa Rica me ha otorgado el honor de presentar a nuestra comunidad al profesor Aníbal Quijano Obregón, a quien hoy nuestra casa de estudios distingue –y de esa manera se distingue– invis- tiéndole con el mayor reconocimiento que otorga al mérito académico e intelectual: el Doctorado Honoris Causa. Presentar una semblanza intelectual de Aníbal Quijano no es una tarea fácil de acometer, por la extensa, fructífera y comprometida trayectoria que él, como so- ciólogo, ha construido durante más de seis décadas de persistente labor. -

Decolonizing Post-Colonial Studies and Paradigms of Political Economy: Transmodernity, Decolonial Thinking, and Global Coloniality RAMÓN GROSFOGUEL UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, BERKELEY Can we produce a radical anti-systemic politics beyond identity politics? Is it possible to articulate a critical cosmopolitanism beyond nationalism and colonialism? Can we produce knowledges beyond Third World and Eurocentric fundamentalisms? Can we overcome the traditional dichotomy between political-economy and cultural studies? Can we move beyond economic reductionism and culturalism? How can we overcome the Eurocentric modernity without throwing away the best of modernity as many Third World fundamentalists do? In this paper, I propose that an epistemic perspective from the subaltern side of the colonial difference has a lot to contribute to this debate. It can contribute to a critical perspective beyond the outlined dichotomies and to a redefinition of capitalism as a world-system. In October 1998, there was a conference/dialogue at Duke University between the South Asian Subaltern Studies Group and the Latin American Subaltern Studies Group. The dialogue initiated at this conference eventually resulted in the publication of several issues of the journal NEPANTLA. However, this conference was the last time the Latin American Subaltern Studies Group met before their split. Among the many reasons and debates that produced this split, there are two that I would like to stress. The members of the Latin American Subaltern Studies Group were primarily Latinamericanist scholars in the USA. Despite their attempt at producing a radical and alternative knowledge, they reproduced the epistemic schema of Area Studies in the United States. With a few exceptions, they produced studies about the subaltern rather than studies with and from a subaltern perspective. -

PHL 445/545 (CRNs: 16115/16156) Advanced Ethics, Fall 2017 MWF: 10:15-11:20 Cramer Hall 250 Instructor Alex Sager Office: 393B Neuberger Hall (Philosophy Department) [email protected] Office hours: TBD1 Course Description This course explores how history, geography, and power have influenced our understanding of ethics through a close reading of the major Latin American philosopher Enrique Dussel’s Ethics of Liberation in the Age of Globalization and Exclusion. Dussel offers a counter-reading of the philosophical canon from the perspective of people excluded from dominant systems. Through his engagement with dozens of major philosophers, Dussel builds a systematic ethical philosophy aimed at human liberation and emancipation. To engage and assess Dussel’s counter-reading, we will also study Kant’s Groundwork, the introduction to Hegel’s Philosophy of History, John Stuart Mill’s Utilitarianism, Marx’s Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts and Theses on Feuerbach, Rawls’ seminal essays on justice as fairness, and Nobel Peace Laureate Rigoberta Menchú’s autobiography. Culture, ‘The People,’ and Political Transformation in Enrique Dussel’s Twenty Theses on Politics Robert Cavooris Prof. Rob Albro Spring 2011 General University Honors Cavooris 2 “How is it possible to get out of Egypt?” 1 If there were ever a question that screamed liberation, this is it. The forlorn, excluded, and oppressed Hebrew slaves plan an escape into the desert, ready to risk it all in order to shed their chains. But why? What sparks this questioning, and what characterizes the moment in which they actually choose to act? These are difficult questions to say the least, and these are the very questions that Enrique Dussel’s politics of liberation seeks to answer. Liberation, in this conception, is freedom from all forms of domination, from the largest international disparities in power between, to the domestic repression of one person by her partner. In this sense, the question of liberation is always contextual and contingent in form, yet universally. In this discussion, I will examine how Enrique Dussel addresses liberation as a political question in his introductory text on the subject, Twenty Theses on Politics. In this text, he employs a number of unique concepts and philosophical understandings to explain his view of how politics can lead to empirical liberation, drawing all the time on the particular experience of Latin Americans in pursuit of this goal. Two important concepts that come out of this discussion are culture , which holds a unique and, I argue, contradictory position in his theory, and “the people, ” a recurring collective political actor that Dussel places at the center of political progress. -

Es decir, un análisis de los discursos emanados de la “symbolic elites” con la finalidad de evidenciar la construcción de la alteridad de los negros, en los espacios públicos, a partir del dispositivo de la colonialidad de poder (Quijano 2014). Esto, teniendo en cuenta que las construcciones discursivas están vinculadas a temas raciales, políticos y económicos que responden a procesos sociales e históricos diferentes y complejos. Es un estudio que se hace siguiendo la teoría de la modernidad-colonialidad. Palabras clave: Colonialidad del poder, elite simbólica, alteridad, identidad nacional, racismo. Introducción El estudio de la construcción de la identidad del grupo negro en el Estado-nación de Panamá, desde la perspectiva del análisis de la información emanada de la prensa periodística, entre 1904-1914, es un área escasamente explorado en la historiografía panameña. -

Ríos Burga Vice Presidente ALAS Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos Perú “La identidad latinoamericana implica, desde la partida una trayectoria de inevitable destrucción de la colonialidad del poder, una manera específica de descolonización y liberación: la des/colonialidad del poder”. (Aníbal Quijano Obregón) Hoy 31 de mayo del 2018 Aníbal Quijano nos ha dejado físicamente pero su pensamiento y obra creativa por su fecundidad y originalidad científico social universal y compromiso con la vida y los pueblos del mundo estará siempre presente. Seguir su aporte es conocer el curso de la sociología en América Latina y el Caribe en dialogo y crítica con otras experiencias del continente americano y el mundo. En un primer momento creativo bajo la influencia de Charles Wright Mills realiza un balance de la teoría sociológica clásica y la sociología de su tiempo evaluando temáticas como la modernización, la ideología, la política y la socioliteratura. En un segundo momento desarrolla la crítica del discurso socioantropologico funcionalista, el estructuralismo, la dependencia y del marxismo. En un tercer momento se centra en el debate sobre el capitalismo mundial y la dependencia. Para en un cuarto momento desarrollar una crítica radical del modelo cultural civilizatorio de la modernidad/colonialidad eurocentrista occidental y del neoliberalismo como sistema de poder global. A diferencia del modelo de pensamiento único autoritario neoliberal expresión de la nueva dictadura de las finanzas internacionales1 , Quijano promueve un modelo teórico científico que se construye como episteme y vida desde los propios actores sociales. En su crítica al capitalismo como totalidad histórica ubica las singularidades de América Latina y el Caribe desde un enfoque histórico sistémico relacional estructural y cotidiano. -

Dicho planteamiento es apenas un aspecto provisorio, dado lo prolífico de su obra. A la par de la guerra intestina que se desató en El Salvador en el último tercio del siglo XX, la filosofía de la liberación intentó dar una justificación teórica de los sectores más vulnerables. El pensamiento que surge a partir de estos hechos es eminentemente crítico, en el sentido de ser punto de partida de las víctimas. A partir de esta consideración, Ignacio Ellacuría se comprometió con la situación política. La propuesta es situar su pensa- miento en una política de la liberación en términos materiales (situado en la corporalidad), crítico (desde las víctimas) y negativo (desde el hambre). Palabras clave: Realidad histórica, liberación, praxis, historia, política. Abstract: The aim is to argue, in the most appropriate way possible, the proposal of “praxis” and “historical reality” of Ignacio Ellacuría. This approach is only a provisional aspect, given the prolific nature of his work. Along with the internal war that broke out in El Salvador in the last third of the 20th century, the philosophy of liberation attempted to provide a theoretical justification for the most vulnerable. -
