GENERAL POLICY 72 73 Honorifics will be utilized as means of reward, recognition, motivation, inspiration, academic 74 enhancement, economic development and fostering excellence in accordance with the 75 terms and conditions associated with the particular honorific. The creation of awards and 76 lectureships at the department, college or campus level must be approved by the Vice 77 Chancellor for Academic Affairs. The creation of chairs and professorships must be 78 recommended by the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, the Chancellor and the LSU Eunice PS No. 62 Effective: August 14, 2000 Revised: December 3, 2012, May 30, 2013, September 18, 2015, February 8, 2016, April 12, 2017 Page 3 of 8 ________________________________________________________________ SUBJECT: Academic Honorifics: Chairs, Professorships, Lectureships, & Awards ________________________________________________________________ 79 President and finally approved by the Board of Supervisors. The University reserves the 80 right to decline any proposal to endow or designate an honorific. Recommendations for 81 creation of honorifics must include: 82 83 A. Sources of Support: 84 1. University sources: allocation of University funds. 85 86 2. Recognized Support Organization: endowment, annual gift or one-time donation. 87 88 B. Classification of Honorific Being Created: chair, professorship, lectureship, or award. 89 90 C. Duration: single event, specific term or indefinite term. 91 92 D. Exact Title and Basis for Naming: 93 For clarity and consistency, a standard format for naming chairs and professorships will be 94 followed. The format comprises three elements, as follows: 95 96 ________(1)_______ ________(2)________ ______(3)______ 97 (Name, usually of (honorific type, with (academic discipline) 98 donor or honoree) appropriate adjectives) 99 100 For example, "Fred C. Frey Chair of Southern Studies" or "Chevron Professorship in 101 Engineering." Use of the adjective "endowed" in the title is discouraged because it 102 unnecessarily lengthens the title. This format notwithstanding, strong donor preferences will 103 be honored. 104 All references to an honorific in the LSU Board of Supervisors’ resolution to establish the 105 honorific, in subsequent personnel actions, in catalog entries and in other publications must 106 be uniform and consistent. 107 For endowments of $1 million or more, or designated support at a similar level, the honorific 108 title usually should be "chair." Exceptions would include honorifics originally termed 109 professorships that have reached the $1 million level through a number of contributions and 110 state matching grants. Such honorifics would remain titled "professorship," or an approved 111 variation, such as "university professor." Endowments of less than $1 million should be titled 112 "professorship," or an approved variation of that term. 113 114 E. Current Value to the Recipient: 115 116 1. Chairs and Professorships: Monetary consideration may take several forms depending 117 on the length of appointment to the honorific and whether there are specific duties 118 associated with holding the chair or professorship.
