New Faculty and Academic Personnel 2017-2018
Nancy Colyar Assistant Professor of Library Science and Director of the Library Nancy joined Birmingham-Southern in September of 2016. She received a B.A. from the College of William and Mary, and she went on to complete an M.S. in library science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has previously worked as a director of the library systems of Kennesaw State University, Southern Polytechnic State University, and Louisiana State University.
Mary Hamil Gilbert Instructor of Classics Mary earned a B.A. in Latin, Greek, and English from the University of Georgia, followed by an M.A. in Latin and Greek from Washington University in Saint Louis. Mary also holds an M.A. and is completing a Ph.D. in classics from the University of Virginia. She has completed courses at the Rare Book School at Harvard University and the University of Virginia. Her research interests include Greek and Roman drama, mythology, and reception and translation studies.
Stephanie Hansard Visiting Instructor of Sociology Stephanie received a B.A. in sociology and anthropology from Agnes Scott College. She went on to earn an M.A. and is completing a Ph.D. in sociology from Georgia State University. She most recently served as a teaching associate at Georgia State University. Her research and teaching interests include social statistics, medical sociology, health disparities, and race and ethnic inequality.
Dasha Maye Assistant Professor of Library Science and Director of ARC Dasha joined Birmingham-Southern in September of 2016. She received a B.S. in psychology and communications from the University of Montevallo, followed by an M.S. in communications and information sciences from the University of Alabama. Before coming to Birmingham-Southern, Dasha served as a librarian for the Pinson Public Library.
Desireé Melonas Assistant Professor of Political Science Desireé received a B.A. in history from Saint Vincent College, and an M.A. and Ph.D. in political science from Temple University. She most recently held the position of Visiting Assistant Professor at Swarthmore College, and she has also served as an instructor at Temple University. Her teaching and research specializations include social and political theory, black political thought, identity theory, and political theories of space and place.
Caleb Moxley Assistant Professor of Mathematics Caleb earned a B.S. in mathematics and a B.A. in religious studies from Randolph College. While at Randolph, Caleb was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa and was a recipient of the Catherine I. Hastings Award in Mathematics. He then earned an M.S. in mathematics from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and is now working on a Ph.D. at UAB in applied mathematics with a minor in computer science. He has held teaching positions at UAB and Samford University, and has been an adjunct professor at Birmingham-Southern since 2015.

Javier Portillo Assistant Professor of Economics Javier received a B.Acc. in accounting and economics from Loyola University New Orleans. He went on to earn an M.S. and is completing a Ph.D. in economics at Florida State University. He served as an instructor at Florida State, and while there was the recipient of the BB&T Dissertation Fellowship and the Michael J. Piette Dissertation Fellowship. His research interests are public economics, law and economics, and experimental economics.
Matthew Rhoades Instructor of Physics Matthew received a B.S. in physics from the University of South Carolina, and will receive an M.S. in physics from the University of Alabama at Birmingham this August. He served as a teaching assistant at both institutions, receiving the Outstanding Senior Teaching Assistant award from UAB’s Department of Physics. He also received the Outstanding Teaching Assistant award from the American Association of Physics Teachers in 2017.
Ream Shoreibah Visiting Assistant Professor of Marketing Ream received a B.A. in business administration from The American University in Cairo, Egypt, followed by an M.B.A. from Indiana University, and a Ph.D. in marketing from the University of South Florida. She has taught at Fort Hays State University, the University of South Florida, and the University of South Florida St. Petersburg. She works as a non-profit marketing consultant and is the owner of a Yogurt Mountain franchise
Sebastían Troncoso Naranjo Visiting Instructor of Mathematics Sebastían received his undergraduate and master’s degrees in mathematics from Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, and is completing a Ph.D. in mathematics from Michigan State University. He served as a teaching assistant at both universities. He also served as the tutoring center supervisor and lead teaching assistant at Michigan State. His research interests include uniform boundedness conjecture, arithmetic dynamics, Diophantine geometry, and non-Archimedean analysis.
Amber Wagner Assistant Professor of Creative and Applied Computing Amber earned a B.S. in computer science and an M.S. in information systems from Kennesaw State University. She holds a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Alabama. She began her teaching career as a computer science instructor and database administrator for the Alabama School of Fine Arts. She served as the Associate Director of Technology Planning and Strategy for Kennesaw State University. Her most recent positions include teaching and research positions at the University of Alabama and Kennesaw State University.

Mary Page Wilson-Lyons Visiting Instructor of Religion An alumna of Birmingham-Southern, Mary Page graduated with a B.A. in religion with a distinction in leadership studies. She was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa while at the College. She then earned an M.Div. from the Candler School of Theology at Emory University, where she was a recipient of the Woodruff Fellowship, the highest accolade for an incoming student. She most recently worked as Director of Strategic Initiatives at The Women’s Fund of Greater Birmingham, and she has served the community with many other organizations including Magic City Acceptance Center and First Light Women’s Shelter.
