About the Authors Eliot Greenspan is a poet, journalist, and travel writer who took his backpack and typewriter the length of Mesoamerica before settling in Costa Rica in 1992. Since then, he has worked steadily for the Tico Times and other local media. He is also the author of Frommer’s Belize, Frommer’s Costa Rica, and Frommer’s Guatemala, as well as Costa Rica For Dummies, and the chapter on Venezuela in Frommer’s South America. Neil E. Schlecht is the author and co-author of a dozen travel guides (including Spain For Dum- mies, Frommer’s South America, and Frommer’s Peru), as well as articles on art and culture and art catalogue essays, and is also a photographer. He now resides in northwestern Connecticut.

He was 75. Marshall Lamm, a spokesman for Mr. Hutcherson’s family, confirmed the death, saying Mr. Hutcherson had long been treated for emphysema. Mr. Hutcherson’s career took flight in the early 1960s, as jazz was slipping free of the complex harmonic and rhythmic designs of bebop. He was fluent in that language, but he was also one of the first to adapt his instrument to a freer postbop language, often playing chords with a pair of mallets in each hand. He released more than 40 albums and appeared on many more, including some regarded as classics, like “Out to Lunch,” by the alto saxophonist, flutist and bass clarinetist Eric Dolphy, and “Mode for Joe,” by the tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson. Both of those albums were a byproduct of Mr. Hutcherson’s close affiliation with Blue Note Records, from 1963 to 1977. He was part of a wave of young artists who defined the label’s forays into experimentalism, including the pianist Andrew Hill and the alto saxophonist Jackie McLean. But he also worked with hard-bop stalwarts like the tenor saxophonist Dexter Gordon, and he later delved into jazz-funk and Afro-Latin grooves.     Cuba's Commercial Aviation Crisis and Its Alarming Record of Air Disasters

    Cuba’s commercial aviation crisis and its worrisome record of air disasters June 29, 2018 The crash last May 18th of a Cubana de Aviación Boeing 737 in Cuba is another indication of the Cuban regime’s pervasive disregard for human life, one that infiltrates even its civil aviation practices. In Cuba’s totalitarian system, the state is, at the same time, absolute owner, supreme regulator, and judge. It seeks to profit from its commercial aviation at the same time it is charged with its safety −all the while, it is free of any accountability, as the judiciary is fully subordinated to the executive branch and an independent press as well as civil society institutions are outlawed. Absent transparency, oversight, and legal recourse, the lives of all who fly are perennially in peril. Gross negligence seems to have caused the latest avoidable deaths. Around noon on Friday, May 18th, a Cubana de Aviación flight from Havana to the eastern city of Holguín went down shortly after take-off, killing 112 of the 113 passengers1 (three women survived the crash, but two succumbed soon thereafter). The sole survivor, a 19-year old woman, is to date fighting for her life. Five Mexicans (the crew and a tourist), two Argentines, and two Sahrawis (one with Spanish citizenship) died. Cuban victims included five children and ten married couples who were evangelical pastors returning from a retreat in Havana and who left many orphans. Photos of the victims and gut-wrenching stories of so many lives cut short and their stricken loved ones have filled news reports and social networks.

    RASG‐PA ESC/29 — WP/04 14/11/17 Twenty ‐ Ninth Regional Aviation Safety Group — Pan America Executive Steering Committee Meeting (RASG‐PA ESC/29) ICAO NACC Regional Office, Mexico City, Mexico, 29‐30 November 2017 Agenda Item 3: Items/Briefings of interest to the RASG‐PA ESC PROPOSAL TO AMEND ICAO FLIGHT DATA ANALYSIS PROGRAMME (FDAP) RECOMMENDATION AND STANDARD TO EXPAND AEROPLANES´ WEIGHT THRESHOLD (Presented by Flight Safety Foundation and supported by Airbus, ATR, Embraer, IATA, Brazil ANAC, ICAO SAM Office, and SRVSOP) EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Flight Data Analysis Program (FDAP) working group comprised by representatives of Airbus, ATR, Embraer, IATA, Brazil ANAC, ICAO SAM Office, and SRVSOP, is in the process of preparing a proposal to expand the number of functional flight data analysis programs. It is anticipated that a greater number of Flight Data Analysis Programs will lead to significantly greater safety levels through analysis of critical event sets and incidents. Action: The FDAP working group is requesting support for greater implementation of FDAP/FDMP throughout the Pan American Regions and consideration of new ICAO standards through the actions outlined in Section 4 of this working paper. Further back in U.S. history, cops, and sol- diers murdered hundreds of union members and labor organizers between 1870 and 1950.

Powell Over the past two decades, the Western Hemisphere has seen dramatic advances in the institutionalization of democracy and the spread of free market economies. Today, the nations of the Americas are working in close partnership to build a hemisphere based on political and economic freedom where dictators, traffickers and terrorists cannot thrive. As fate would have it, I was in Lima, Peru joining our hemispheric neighbors in the adoption of the Inter-American Democratic Charter when the terrorists struck the United States on September 11, 2001. By adopting the Democratic Charter, the countries of our hemisphere made a powerful statement in support of freedom, humanity and peace. Conspicuous for its absence on that historic occasion was Cuba. Cuba alone among the hemispheric nations did not adopt the Democratic Charter. That is not surprising, for Cuba alone among the nations of Americas is a dictatorship. For over four decades, the regime of Fidel Castro has imposed upon the Cuban people a communist system of government that systematically violates their most fundamental human rights. Just last year, the Castro regime consigned 75 human rights activists, independent librarians and journalists and democracy advocates to an average of nearly 20 years of imprisonment.

    PRIMEROS VUELOS DEL CORREO AÉREO EN CUBA 70 ANIVERSARIO DE LA LÍNEA AÉREA DEL CIRCUITO NORTE El correo aéreo nacional se inauguró oficial- mente el 30 de octubre de 1930, iniciando vuelo desde la Ciudad de La Habana, con escalas en Santa Cla- ra, Morón, Camagüey, Victoria de las Tunas, Holguín y San- tiago de Cuba, y regresó al día siguiente con un recorrido a la inversa, haciendo escala en las ciudades señaladas. La tarifa establecida fue de $0.10, por cada onza, que se justificaba con los sellos que se emitieron con esa finalidad, deduciendo del importe total vendidos un 80% que era abonada a la Com- pañía Curtiss que transportaba dicha correspondencia. El día 5 de enero, el servicio aéreo fue ampliado com- binándolo con el correo ordinario estableciendo una ruta es- pecial entre Antilla, Cayo Mambí, Barrederas y Baracoa, que fue operada por la Corporación Aeronáutica de Cuba, en prin- cipio a través de embarcaciones de vapor de una compañía particular y más tarde a través de hidroplanos.
