Se trata de un tema reciente que ha suscitado el debate político en España y, por lo tanto, poco estudiado hasta el momento. Esto justifica el alto grado de novedad de esta investigación. En este sentido, el objetivo principal es conocer la evolución del enfoque periodístico otorgado a diversos ítems considerados de especial relevancia en este tema. Para ello, se ha llevado a cabo un análisis del discurso. Se han estudiado dos periodos temporales de especial relevancia para este proceso, la celebración de la Diada de 2012 y el anuncio del referéndum (2013). La muestra está integrada por cinco periódicos: el diario Ara, La Vanguardia, El País, El Mundo y La Razón. Lo que implicó el análisis de 319 noticias. Los resultados obtenidos permiten comprobar como la ideología no ha sido determinante en la manera de posicionarse de cada periódico respecto al tema de la independencia -

Variation and change in Latin American Spanish and Portuguese Gregory R. Guy New York University Fieldworker:¿Que Ud. considera ‘buen español? New York Puerto Rican Informant: Tiene que pronunciar la ‘s’. Western hemisphere varieties of Spanish and Portuguese show substantial similarity in the patterning of sociolinguistic variation and change. Caribbean and coastal dialects of Latin American Spanish share several variables with Brazilian Portuguese (e.g., deletion of coda –s, –r). These variables also show similar social distribution in Hispanic and Lusophone communities: formal styles and high status speakers are consonantally conservative, while higher deletion is associated with working class speakers and informal styles. The regions that show these sociolinguistic parallels also share common historical demographic characteristics, notably a significant population of African ancestry and the associated history of extensive contact with African languages into the 19th C. But contemporary changes in progress are also active, further differentiating Latin American language varieties. Introduction The Spanish and Portuguese languages have long been the objects of separate tradi- tions of scholarship that treat each of them in isolation. But this traditional separation is more indicative of political distinctions – Spain and Portugal have been separate nation-states for almost a millennium – than of any marked linguistic differences. In fact, these two Iberian siblings exhibit extensive linguistic resemblance, as well as no- tably parallel and intertwined social histories in the Americas. As this volume attests, these languages may very fruitfully be examined together, and such a joint and com- parative approach permits broader generalizations and deeper insights than may be obtained by considering each of them separately. -

“Behind-the-Table” Conflicts in the Failed Negotiation for a Referendum for the Independence of Catalonia Oriol Valentí i Vidal*∗ Spain is facing its most profound constitutional crisis since democracy was restored in 1978. After years of escalating political conflict, the Catalan government announced it would organize an independence referendum on October 1, 2017, an outcome that the Spanish government vowed to block. This article represents, to the best of the author’s knowledge, the first scholarly examination to date from a negotiation theory perspective of the events that hindered political dialogue between both governments regarding the organization of the secession vote. It applies Robert H. Mnookin’s insights on internal conflicts to identify the apparent paradox that characterized this conflict: while it was arguably in the best interest of most Catalans and Spaniards to know the nature and extent of the political relationship that Catalonia desired with Spain, their governments were nevertheless unable to negotiate the terms and conditions of a legal, mutually agreed upon referendum to achieve this result. ABSTRACT The aim of this thesis is to assess attitudes of speakers towards their local or regional variety. Research in the field of sociolinguistics has shown that factors such as gender, age, place of residence, and social status affect linguistic behaviour and perception of local and regional varieties. This thesis consists of three main parts. In the first part the concept of language, minority language, and dialect is discussed; in the second part the official position towards local or regional varieties in Europe and in Italy is considered; in the third part attitudes of speakers towards actions aimed at safeguarding their local or regional varieties are analyzed. The conclusion offers a comparison of the results of the surveys and a discussion on how things may develop in the future. I attended that conference symposium, and I recall an atmosphere of excitement and intellectual discovery. The presenters and much of the audience felt that the concept of language ideology was just beginning to open up important new areas for research on language and society, and we were impressed by the rich, diverse presentations that clarified and extended the concept. Language Ideologies INGRID PILLER Macquarie University, Australia Many people from around the world are likely to agree on the following: English is the most useful language for global commercial, scientific, and cultural exchange. The best kind of English is spoken by native speakers, particularly those from the United King- dom and the United States of America, and everyone else should try to emulate their English. American English sounds professional and competent, while African Ameri- can English sounds streetwise and cool and Indian English sounds nerdy and funny. While most readers will recognize these commonsense assumptions about English as a global language, it is also easy to see that they are nothing more than beliefs and feelings and that they are impossible to confirm or refute. This is most obvious in the case of value judgments about accents: Whether you think that Indian English is funny or not depends on who you are and what your experiences with Indian English are. If you are a speaker of Indian English, it is unlikely that you consider it funny; conversely, if you regularly interact with Indian speakers of English, you are unlikely to find the way they talk funny. On the other hand, if your main exposure to Indian English is through the character of Apu in the animated television series The Simpsons,youarelikelyto find Indian English very funny. While it is relatively easy to see through the idea that “Indian English is funny,” it is a bit more difficult to question some of the other assumptions in the introductory example, such as its many language names: The meaning of terms like “English,” “Amer- icanEnglish,”“AfricanAmericanEnglish,”or“IndianEnglish”isnotasstraightforward as it may seem. -

Language Contact and Intonation Change: the Case of Galician and Galician Spanish Language Contact Is One of the Driving Forces
Language contact and intonation change: The case of Galician and Galician Spanish Language contact is one of the driving forces of language change. As Thomason and Kaufman (1988:3) state, “contact-induced language change at all levels of linguistic structure is a pervasive phenomenon”. A language contact situation may be observed when at least two different language varieties are spoken within the same social group in a given period of time. In such a situation, at least three sociolinguistic scenarios may be encountered, each of which may give rise to a specific pattern of prosodic change. In the first scenario, the speakers of a linguistic community learn their first language and then, during a later period related to a second socialisation stage, they acquire their second language (Barker, 2005; Devis Herraiz, 2008; De Leeuw et al., 2010, 2012; Simonet, 2011, among others). As a potential consequence of this, bilingual speakers who are dominant in one of the two languages will involuntarily transfer some of the intonation characteristics of their L1 to the L2, giving rise to direct transfer. The second scenario is one in which the speakers have a similar competence in the two languages, which can thus be considered L1s, though they may use them for different purposes (Queen, 2001; Colantoni and Gurlekian, 2004; O’Rourke, 2005; Hickey, 2008; Fagyal, 2010; Muntendam, 2013, among others). As a result, fusion will take place, as simultaneous bilinguals will mix up intonational features belonging to each of their two languages and may develop an intonation system different from the ones used by monolinguals in each of the two languages.
