  • From the Late Cretaceous of the North American Gulf Coastal Plain, USA
Palaeontologia Electronica palaeo-electronica.org New occurrences of Belonostomus (Teleostomorpha: Aspidorhynchidae) from the Late Cretaceous of the North American Gulf Coastal Plain, USA Nathan E. Van Vranken, Christopher Fielitz, and Jun A. Ebersole ABSTRACT This research reinforces the poorly documented Cretaceous record of the aspido- rhynchid fish Belonostomus found in the North American Gulf Coastal Plain. This unique fish has gone mostly unnoticed in fossil collections due to the heightened diver- sity and popularity of other Cretaceous teleosts. Six new specimens are documented from various fossil sites in Texas, Mississippi, and Alabama. Most of these fossil locali- ties have not produced aspidorhynchid material until now and help bridge the gap in records between the Lower and Upper Cretaceous stratigraphic records of the North American continent. The inclusion of these new Belonostomus records also helps to further our understanding of this enigmatic fish. Nathan E. Van Vranken. The specimen has been tentatively assigned to the superfamily Penaeoidea Rafinesque-Schmaltz, 1815, for the lack of main diagnostic characters. Despite the incompleteness of the body, it is the second report of penaeid from the Lower Cretaceous of Mexico, increasing the scarce knowledge about the decapod assemblage of Tepexi de Rodríguez basin. Keywords: Crustacea, Decapoda, Penaeoidea, Lower Cretaceous, Mexico.

Tlayua quarries are 94 km southeast of Puebla and 2 km northeast of the town of Tepexi de Rodriguez in the Eastern part of central Mexico. The Middle Member is fossiliferous and composed mainly of a micritic lithographic limestone with layers having packs that consist of as much as 30 % hematite. The fossils are confined to these iron rich layers. These Middle Member are about 28 m thick. Due to the abundance, variety and conservation of its paleobiota, the Tlayua quarry is one of the most important fos- siliferous localities from North America’s Cretaceous.
