Foreword

ogether with our team of organisers we have been working on Pula 2018 since March. Now the complete officials team starts to shape. T In line with our ambitious schedule, which would leave us carefree during the summer, it is about the right time to publish President’s vision booklet, which is an integral part of calls for Vice-Presidents and Chairper- sons of Pula 2018 – 15th Regional Session of EYP Croatia. We are looking forward to reading your applications and can’t wait to meet you in ! Yours truly, Filip Konić and Nika Milinović, Head Organisers of Pula 2018

Vision

e are very happy to launch the call for officials of Pula 2018, which stands apart through its theme “openness in the core of identity”. W To truly grasp the idea of the theme one must dive in the history of the city. Pula, or Pola, as my grandparents used to say, was passed on be- tween three spheres of influence during the last 100 years. The historical capital of Istria hosts a splendid mixture of Austrian footprints, Italian archi- tecture and Croatian cuisine. This wonderful mixture, which forms the back- bone of Pula/Pola’s cultural identity could not exist without constant open- ness to the differences of the world. Openness will constitute the backbone of the session, this includes:

• Openness to participants from different backgrounds, including stu- dents from vocational and Italian-speaking high-schools.

• Openness in the session’s cultural programme featuring Balkan tunes and Italian dishes, Roman amphitheatres and Istrian beaches.

2

• Openness as a subject of discussion, with simple committee topics aimed to have the participants explore the differences of tomorrow which require greater openness.

• Openness to all officials regardless of their level of experience and role at the session, with a strong focus on inter-team integration.

• Openness to new ideas and projects, to explore how we can make the experience of newcomers in our youth more fun and exciting. Filip, Nika and myself are happy to open the call for Chairpersons and Vice -Presidents. If you feel interested in this theme, we would be honoured to receive your application and join us to shape this session together. Sincerely, Manfredi Danielis, the President of Pula 2018

3 Pula 2018—15th Regional Session of EYP Croatia

Location

hen choosing the hosting cities for our regional session, EYP Croatia aims for regional balance. As we try to visit all parts of Croatia in a W year, we needed a session in the western parts of our country. And we had the perfect candidate. City of Pula, also Città di Pola, the historical capital of Istria region is located at the tip of the biggest Croatian peninsula and will host the 15th Regional Session of EYP Croatia from September 27th to September 30th 2018. This ses- sion will mark the return of our regional sessions to Istria, back where we started 9 years ago with 1st regional session in 2009. We are thrilled to hold a session in a city with such an impressive historical heritage, which began almost 3000 years ago, with the Illyric tribe of Histri. It was a prominent part of the Roman Empire, marked with numerous monu- ments; the most popular is the Arena, one of the best preserved Roman am- phitheatres in the world. During the Middle Ages, it changed many rulers and states. Being the main military port of the Austrian navy helped its develop- ment into a shipbuilding and trading powerhouse. The 20th century was a troubling one – Croatian and later Italian citizens faced repression, which led to refuge in their home countries. Today, Pula is a thriving city oriented towards culture and youth. It is also a university centre, welcoming students from many different parts of Croatia, which make up 70% of the student population.

Tourism is an important part of today’s Pula and the Pula is served by an whole region, which are among the most visited international airport places in whole Croatia. The rest of the delegates will be selected from the open call, and it is expected that most of the applications will be from the Istarska County and the neighbouring Primorsko-goranska County. We are currently also negotiating with EYP Italy to have a 5-member delegation on this ses- sion, improving the academic quality. 6 committees of 10 delegates will be chaired by 10 chairpersons and 2 chair- ing vice-presidents, co-chairing in pairs, and led by the session president. The media output will be provided by 6 media team members, overlooked by 1 editorial assistant and 1 editor. The organising team consists of 7 organ- isers, headed by 2 head organisers. A jury of 1 head of jury and 2 jury mem- bers is planned as well, to improve the quality of selection process, while easing the burden on chairs. This session will be the usual regional session, with 1 day for CMO team- building and training and the usual three days of teambuilding, committee work and general assembly for the delegates. “ Openness in the core of identity.
