WHAT TO PACK FOR WINTER IN ALASKA Developing a winter clothing system As you will be outdoors every day it is important to have the right clothing and footwear with you. Choosing the proper gear will make your winter trip more enjoyable. Your clothing must work as a system that wicks away perspiration, insulates you from the cold and protects you from the wind. The preferred system is made up of several layers. This allows you to easily adjust your clothing to changes in the weather and changes in your heat output. The following are suggestions for your Winter Alaska trip. The First layer or Base layer Clothing next to your skin must wick perspiration away from your skin to keep you dry and warm. Capilene is excellent. Polypropylene is good. Wool or cotton are inappropriate as they are poor wicking layers. The Second layer (or layers) This layer provides insulation and retain your body heat without restricting movement. Pile, polar fleece, and synchilla are great. Wool is heavier and will hold moisture longer but maintains most of its insulating ability even when wet. The Third layer This offers extra insulation. A down filled parka or thinsulate are good examples. Some down filled parkas can be used as outer layer if they are water repellent. A down filled parka with insulated hood will keep you warm & toasty. The Fourth layer or outer layer This must offer protection from the wind, rain and snow. The more wind proof often is the less breathable. Goretex is a good choice as it is very windproof.

Layering Basics When you step outdoors, the ancient art of layering becomes your smart-technology thermostat. This tried-and-true strategy lets you regulate comfort by slipping layers on and off as your activity level or the weather changes. How to layer: To understand layering your clothing for outdoor activities, you need to know the function of each layer: 1. Base layer (underwear layer): wicks sweat off your skin 2. Middle layer (insulating layer): retains body heat to protect you from the cold 3. Outer layer (shell layer): shields you from wind and rain Even if you don’t wear all three layers at the outset, it’s a good idea to take all layers on every outing: You can peel off layers if things heat up, but you can’t put on layers that you didn’t bring along. We’re often asked about how to layer for certain weather. Any suggestions based solely on weather, though, overlook key considerations, like exertion level and personal metabolism. All recommendations are for someone who doesn’t run particularly hot or cold, who is going on an intermediate-level half-day hike: Cold-weather layers: Midweight polyester long underwear top and bottom; a jacket with synthetic insulation; midweight fleece pants; waterproof/breathable rain jacket and pants. Gold Webster’s Third New International Dictionary of the English Language: Unabridged (1961) notes objectively that the word wear is “often used in combination”. Not everyone, however, has been satisfied with all the combinations. In A History of Modern Colloquial English (Oxford, Basil Blackwell, 1936), Henry Cecil Wyld wrote: “[...] we may begin our brief catalogue of curiosities, and we thus designate them not because of any inherent strangeness or eccentricity in the words themselves, but on account of the curious fact that what are normal and natural elements of speech in some circles, are regarded in others as ‘vulgar’ and laughable. The children helped put clothing items on the boys so he could go outside and play in the snow. The children put on mittens, hat, scarf, coat, pants,and boots. Large Group Cassi: In large group we explored some new books all about winter. The children enjoyed reading The Snowy Day, The Mitten and Winter. We sang our core songs and the two new ones Ms. Nicole made song boards for. Since this was our first week of winter, we talked about the clothes we need to wear when it is cold. Nicole: This week in large group the children began to learn two new winter clothing song. We sand “Put on your shoes” by Super Simple Songs and “Winter Mitten Song” by Kidboomers. Then we viewed a book on the Smartboard targeting winter clothes you need to put on to get ready to play in the snow. We targeted the following winter clothing items: hat, mittens, scarf, coat, snowpants, and boots. Then the children completed a writing activity sharing what they put on in the winter. The children completed the sentence “I put on _____”. We made our choices on Tuesday and completed our book page on Thursday. Music and Movement In Music and Movement this week, we had the children getting dressed for outside play (we didn’t actually go out). With the help of our students using devices, they were able to tell the other children what to put on.
