2019 SEASON REPORT Berowra Wallabies Junior Football Club

1 2

Presidents Report As Berowra recovered from the December hail storms it was a slow start to 2019 for all clubs in the area, but come season launch the Wallabies fielded ten teams from U6s through to U20s. We’ve seen great improvement in all of our teams over the year and to me it was really rewarding to see the skills, teamwork, fun, friendships and club spirit continue to grow, as well as welcoming new families to join in all the action rugby league can offer. Some of the highlights include: Our ‘Joeys’ pre-school program continued to grow participation rate of boys and girls in the 3- 6 age group with ten players graduating to U6s. With some eligible to play U6s again next year, this is a great introduction for both players and parents to rugby league. In the Minis, we again fielded two U6 teams alongside teams in the U7s and U8s. Continuing our super hero theme from last year, these teams took the field this season sporting a new Captain America jersey design which was a great hit with the players. The players exhibited some great skills and showed tremendous development throughout the season which will form the basis for seasons ahead. Watching the enjoyment and progression of our mini’s is always a highlight of any season. Of our six competition grades we had five teams make it into the semi-finals with the sixth, our U20s, only missing out on for and against in a tough Sydney wide Gold competition. For our U9’s in their first year of competition, the team grew in confidence, and skill as the season progressed, finishing fourth at seasons end before losing a tight semi-final against Asquith. In the U12’s it was year of development as they went up to a full field with 13-aside under MOD rules and moved to the larger Northern Conference competition. Fielding teams in the Gold and Silver/Bronze competitions both teams acquitted themselves well. The U12 Golds finished third and progressed to the preliminary final before losing to Narrabeen Sharks; whilst the U12 Bronze made up of U12 and U11 players, finished fourth and progressed to the second round of the semi-finals before losing in extra time to Avalon Bulldogs. A big thank you to Brett Carter and Dan Ferrington for taking on the coaching roles for these teams in 2019. Our U14s Berowra and U16s Grizzlies teams were both Minor Premiers and progressed straight into the grand finals. Whilst both teams narrowly lost their grand finals it was a fantastic season for both teams, something I’m sure they will remember for a long time, and which they and their coaches should be extremely proud of. A special mention and huge congratulations must go to the following players who have reached this year a milestone with the Wallabies.

Berowra Wallabies 2019 Season Report 3

A special mention and huge congratulations must go to our players that reached 100 and 200 game milestones with the Wallabies this year. This is a terrific achievement for these players some who have played from u6s right through to u16s. As a club we would like to thank all our players with how they have represented our club, whether that be displaying excellent sportsmanship on the field, supporting and helping out junior teams or helping raise money for charities, you have all helped build a fantastic culture at the Wallabies. Thank you to all the parents for supporting your kids and teams all season and we hope to see you all back next year at the Wallabies. Spread the word about our great club and bring along a new mate for 2020 to join in all the fun associated with playing the greatest game of all. On behalf of the players and committee we would like to extend a huge thank you to all of our coaches, managers, and trainers for all for their time, effort, knowledge, patience and dedication in working to get your teams to realise their full potential. It is a huge commitment but a very rewarding one and the development of players is so evident and that is directly attributed to your efforts. We hope to see you all back involved next season. We would like to acknowledge all our sponsors for their support in the 2019 season (shown here in the pages of the year book). In a tough financial environment, we deeply appreciate each and every donation made from our sponsors. Without our wonderful sponsors we wouldn’t be able to get these kids on the field. A big thank you to everyone involved on the committee and their families. Your dedication, effort and commitment to ensure everything behind the scenes runs smoothly so the players are able to get on the field each week is very much appreciated. I would also like to thank all those who volunteered where they could at setup or pack up, on the BBQ, running lines, or in the canteen throughout the year. Go the Wallabies. Bryan Summerhayes

Berowra Wallabies 2019 Season Report 4

Treasurers Report The 2019 season saw the Berowra Wallabies producing a financial surplus. Cash reserves improved by 80%, improving the viability of the club. While registrations came in closer to the start of the season than what was planned, the late surge pushed registrations 7% above last year. The support of the local community also provided a 8% lift in the club’s sponsorship programme. Pleasingly a number of new sponsors were added to our programme, extending the coverage of our club. Costs were managed well throughout the year, despite the fact that a number of 2018 costs were paid during this season. The success of the canteen has continued this year, and it continues to be a vital part of the club’s surplus. It is important that we continue to have the help from across the club to run the canteen, without the assistance of club members the canteen would not be the contributor that it is. Throughout 2019 the club also supported a number of projects, including the new scoreboard, AED and beginner programmes. As we head towards 2020 the club has commenced building its financial plan, including sponsorship programmes, to ensure a surplus is repeated. The committee is committed to improving our surplus and cash reserves in order to support future projects and programmes. Greg Mitchell

Joeys In 2019 we again kicked off the pre-season recruitment with an eight week ‘Joeys’ pre-school program running at Warrina Street Oval after school. The program focuses on developing healthy lifestyles and fundamental movement skills like catching, passing and balance in a fun team environment.

Led by our qualified coaches alongside Kyle Jefferey from Rising Stars Sports Development, the goal of the program is to capture the imagination of children aged 3-5 years old and demonstrate to parents that ours is a safe and well governed sport run by enthusiastic volunteers, so that as they transition from preschool to primary school they choose junior league with the Berowra Wallabies as their sport of choice.

Our ‘Joeys’ continued to grow participation rate of boys and girls in the 3-6 age group with ten players graduating to U6s.

It was also exciting to see the launch of the Baby Bears programs across the North Sydney Junior Rugby League district clubs on the back of the success of our Joeys program that launched last year.

Thank you to everyone involved each week running the program.

Keep an eye out for our Joeys program running again in early 2020, it’s a great way to keep our kids active, meet new friends and learn more about junior league.

Coach: Marc Pasparne Manager: Kaela Pasparne

We had a great season with 5 new players this year joining our team. It was a great season of watching the team change as they got to know each other. All players gained confidence and skills that helped them grow as NRL stars this year. Aryah was the only girl in our team! She was ferocious in her tackles & managed to score some try’s in her 1st season with the club. Kaise was our youngest player & had no fear this year. He committed to every tackle & would try to run straight through each time he got his hands on the ball. Duke was our speed machine who scored several try’s for the team this year & mastered tackling by the end of the season. Jono was always ready for the ball! Watching him laugh as he would get past the other team to score his try put a big smile on his face as well as the team. Xander thrived in his first season and was quick to get the aim of the game. He managed to score try’s, tackle & put in 100% effort each week. Will, Brax & Mase continued to grow in their 2nd season of NRL & will be players to watch. These boys helped train all our new players & show them how much fun NRL is as a team sport.

U6 Greys Report

Coach: Dean Burgess Manager: Kiri Burgess

What a great season we have had this year. For most of the Greys it was their first season of footy which meant learning lots of new skills and the rules of the game. Our team has learnt so much this year, catching and playing the ball, learning how to tackle and run with the ball and by the end of the season some of us had started using a fend to try and break free from the opposition. Our team has bonded really well and have become good friends. We had a fabulous season with lots of fun and am looking forward to seeing you all back again next year. Liam- has come so far this year starting the season off quietly with learning how to catch and play the ball, running with the ball and by the end of the season he was getting in there and trying to assist with tackles. Leo- had a smile on his face every time he touched the ball he made some great tackles and runs with the ball. Lachie- showed some great potential for his first season of footy scoring tries and making some fabulous tackles. He was always at training and games supporting his team even when he was unwell. Bobby- registered just the day before our first game, he was a little shy to start with but once he learnt how to run and tackle by the end of the season, he was making runs and putting on some great tackles.

Berowra Wallabies 2019 Season Report 12

Ellie- this is Ellie’s second season of footy and her skills have developed even further. One of our top try scorers, Ellie was out there making lots of tackles and giving her best. Carter- our smallest and youngest member of the team Carter wasn’t ever afraid to get out there and try. He made some amazing tackles on some of the bigger players sometimes coming off second best but always out there trying. He was also one of our top try scorers. Poppi- this is also Poppi’s second season of footy and she has come a long way. From being the shy little girl who didn’t want to run with the ball at the start of last year to our top try scorer this year. Poppi was too fast for the opposition on many occasions. U12 Maroon Report

Coach: Brett Carter Manager: Andy Ward Trainers: Steve Guaslaa

The 2019 Season for the Berowra Wallabies under 12 was filled with change for the kids. They were playing their last season of Mod football which included adjusting to some rule changes and new coaching staff. Pre-season training began in February/March and the kids all trained very well with the older Wallabies, it was a good sign that the kids would perform well in 2019.

With the amalgamation of the under 11 kids into the 12’s squad the club registered two teams for the under 12 division and we ran two teams for the season. We trialled against Belrose with the whole squad and all of the kids performed very well on the day and enjoyed being back playing Footy with their mates.

The Northern Conference (gold team) entered into an unchartered territory of different teams from the Northern beaches and different playing venues to experience. Needless to say there were plenty of nerves for the first competition game against Narrabeen at Lake Park. I was very proud of the boys, taking on a new team on an oval they had not played at before. They lost the first game by 4 points and showed they were not going to be easy to beat in 2019.

The competition was fast and tough for the entire season and we struggled to get consistency and flow due to Byes, forfeits, wet weather, injuries and unavailability’s.

The statistics concluded at:

• 2 x wash outs • 1 x forfeit

Berowra Wallabies 2019 Season Report 17

• 1 x draw • 6 losses and three of the losses by 4 points • 5 Wins

The boys should be very proud of their achievements in their first Northern conference competition. They were highly competitive all year and to make the Semi-finals, beat Narraweena at Warrina St oval in front of their home supporters and progress to a final, was a testament to all of the boys for the hard work and commitment.

Unfortunately the boys were out muscled by Narrabeen in the final and bowed out in third place for season 2019.

I would like to take the opportunity to thank all of the kids and parents over the past few years for their ongoing support, to Andy Ward for his managerial and mentoring contributions over the last 7/8 years and Steve Gauslaa for his valued training contribution this year.

In closing, I would like to congratulate Cheyne Brown in his appointment as the u13’s coach for season 2020. Cheyne brings a wealth of current football experience and the kids will only prosper from his guidance.

I look forward to seeing all the boys return next year, where they play their first international rugby league season and push to go all the way.

Go Wallabies!!!!!!

U12 Greys Report

Coach: Dan Ferrington Manager: Michelle Earle Trainers: Lee Taylor Josh Davenport Tana Killick

So, a bit about the season:

We started the season not knowing until the very last minute if we could form (2) U12 sides, thankfully for the players we were able to get just enough numbers for (2) teams and therefore provide more kids the opportunity to play.

We merged the U11 kids up into the U12’s group as they were extremely short and unable to make a side, we ended up with (5) U11 kids to play for the Greys allowing us to make a team, we also had (3) kids play their first year of footy and I couldn’t be more proud of all of these Boys.

We had a tough year based on results however a sporting season for a young age group like under 12’s can be judged on much more than wins v losses or for and against, hopefully with my goal of being fair and providing all the kids with equal game time and opportunities I hope the success of this season will be measured on how many of the players back up and play for the Wallabies next year and I hope that based on this groups enthusiasm for the game we get everyone back.

There were a few highlights to the season in which we finished a whole lot stronger to where we started:

The draw against the Hawks at Turramurra was arguably our best game, the Hawks eventually made it through to the GF in our division. Our defense was outstanding that day only letting in three tries and there were a couple of special efforts in the game - two tries for Ethan Waite and some barnstorming runs from Cam Gins.

Berowra Wallabies 2019 Season Report 20

We had a good win against Belrose 14-12 toward the end of the season with the players defending eight or so sets in there half in the last 10 minutes of the game. Belrose actually scored from a kick in the last minute only to be called off side the whole Belrose bench and players went up simultaneously only to realise and be let down that the ref had blown it up. It was great to see the team get this win and some much-needed self-belief for themselves, in which I had in them throughout the whole year.

We ended the season in a Knockout Semi Final at Warrina against Avalon who had forfeited twice to us throughout regular season; we lost in extra time Golden Try 16-12. Our defense in our last game was something for the team to be really proud of, our Captain Kayla especially can be proud of her effort on her last game in a mixed team.

Thanks, Dan Ferrington

With everyone returning from 2018 and with some new recruits over the summer the team trained hard and gelled really well as a unit through the pre-season in preparation for 2019 season. The season kicked off in early April as a combined nine team NSWRL Northern Conference competition, with the first ten rounds set to decide the split of Gold and Silver divisions. With a washout in round one, the boys first game was against 2018 gold division Lane Cove Tigers at Warrina Street, which proved a tough first encounter as the team adjusted to positions and speed of the game. From that game however the boys kicked into gear, winning four of their next seven games, to be sitting in fourth place at the end of round ten. Having only lost games to eventual gold division teams Lane Cove, North Curl Curl, Mona Vale and Cromer the team was relegated to the Silver division. Whilst not beating those teams, the team certainly competed in parts of those games, only to fall due to lapses in concentration and experience. After the competition split, the team went on to win their remaining five regular season games to finish minor premiers and headed straight into the grand final after beating Narrabeen

Unfortunately, the team fell one short losing the grand 16-12 Berowra 15 9 4 0 1 272 258 14 34 against a committed Ku-ring-gai Wallabies Cubs team. Whilst not winning the Narrabeen 15 7 5 0 2 213 212 1 32 silverware it is a huge Sharks achievement for a group of Ku-ring-gai 14 2 8 1 3 142 300 -158 25 players that trained and worked Cubs well together all year. Coach: Cheyne Brown Manager: Lisa Jenkinson Trainers: Greg Adnum Steve Mamari

In 2019 Berowra and Asquith having recognised that there is currently a drop off in player involvement from U16s onwards, met and decided that a 3-year trial formation of a joint venture between both clubs, to be known as the ‘Northern Grizzlies’, provided the greatest opportunity for players to be able to continue playing rugby league in our area. With 20 players registered across both clubs the team hit the paddock for a tough preseason in preparation for competing in a combined NSWRL North Team P W L D B FOR AGST PD PTS Eastern U16 Silver division competition. The season started Northern 14 10 2 0 2 330 141 189 37 Grizzlies well with a 36-14 win over North Sydney Brothers at Warrina Leichardt 15 8 4 0 2 351 128 223 34 Street Oval, which was the start Wanderers the team needed to build Manly 13 9 2 0 1 241 116 125 32 confidence across the playing Brothers and coaching group that the Holy Cross 14 6 6 0 2 198 240 -42 30 new Northern Grizzlies concept Rhinos would work. Narraweena 14 4 7 1 2 181 334 -153 27 During the season we had a few Hawks players out with injury and at NS Brothers 14 2 9 1 2 234 348 -114 23 times finished games with only 12 players despite this the boys Carlingford 14 2 10 0 2 146 357 -211 21 worked hard for each other and Cougars were still winning games.

Berowra Wallabies 2019 Season Report 24

The Grizzlies then went on to win ten of a possible twelve games and finished minor premiers; and were straight into the Grand Final after beating Leichardt Wanderers 34-20 in week one the semis. The team fought hard, however with a couple of key players out for the big game, the team found themselves a man short after a controversial sin binning at a crucial time with the Grizzlies behind 6-4 on the scoreboard. During that ten-minute sin bin period, Manly Christian Brothers scored a converted try and a penalty goal to stretch their lead out to 14-4 with eight minutes left to run on the clock. Back to a full complement the Grizzlies hit back with a try out wide, but eventually ran out of time, losing 14-8. Kaelan Brown was voted most valuable player for the Grand Final. In the inaugural season for this team it was a fantastic effort by the players and parents to get to the Grand Final.

Berowra Wallabies 2019 Season Report 27

Vale Doug McKinnon The Berowra Wallabies were saddened this year by the passing of Doug McKinnon, our first Life Member, on Tuesday 20th August. Doug played 186 games for the , player number 553, including 29 first grade games and was instrumental in founding our football club. He had the thrill of playing with some of the Bears greatest players, Irvine, Carlson, McCaffrey, and Hawick. After retiring from grade with the Bears in 1962, Doug was living in Berowra when he met local builder Bill Whiddon, through playing cricket at Berowra Oval. In Doug’s own words, the pair “soon became good friends mainly through his tragic support of the North Sydney RLFC with whom I had played until a couple of years before.” In 1967 Bill first proposed the idea of forming a rugby league club in Berowra at a time when it was largely unheard of. Following an inaugural meeting at the district hall the Berowra Junior Rugby League Football Club was formed with Bill as President, Doug as Secretary and Johnny Hoy as Treasurer. From that initial committee, Doug became a mainstay of the Berowra JRLFC committee through those early years from 1967 through until 1985; holding the position of secretary 7 times (1967-1970; 1973; 1984-1985) and Treasurer 5 times (1971-1975). Doug and his wife Fay (who was also a committee member, holding the position of Treasurer in 1985-1986) frequently opened their home up to hold committee meetings. In 1969 when Berowra fielded their first A’Grade side in the North Sydney JRL competition, Doug was the team's Captain/Coach. He continued his playing days with the club through until 1973 before taking up numerous coach and manager roles for many years. Doug is pictured above (second player standing on the left, circled) in Berowra’s very first A’Grade team taken at Berowra Oval in 1969.
