06 2019 110th Annual Report 2019 110th Annual Report 07 NSWRL Junior League Administrator, Balmain District

The 2019 Balmain District JRL season was one of great success. Having had the opportunity to move into the Junior League Administrator role, the season has been an incredible learning experience in understanding all aspects of this proud Junior League District and developing strong relationships with the individuals at all levels who ensure its ongoing success.

The 2019 season saw over 1600 registered participants across 12 clubs participate in competitions from Under 6's up to Open Age. On the field, we saw some outstanding games of football played in the true spirit of the game, some fantastic displays of athleticism and sportsmanship, and some pleasing results across the board from all teams and clubs within the District. To cap it all off, we held the 2019 Grand finals at Leichhardt Oval on Saturday 31st August and Sunday 1st September. What a way to finish off another year at the prestigious 8th wonder of the world, which was enjoyed by all participants and spectators.

A personal highlight for me for this season was the 2019 Balmain District JRL Inaugural Gala Dinner on Friday 13th September at Le Montage. This season saw a change to previous District social events with a greater focus on the recognition and appreciation of our wonderful volunteers. The night was full of fun, laughter and socialising which also gave us the chance to say thank you to all the special people involved in our District. It was pleasing to see people from different clubs within the District all united together at such a successful event. Shout out to the Tiger statue who turned out to be very popular during the evening!

There are many who I would like to thank for making my first season as the Junior League Administrator, a memorable and enjoyable one. Firstly, having started in the role as after the season was already underway, I was extremely fortunate to have the ongoing support and guidance of NSWRL Club and Competition Coordinator Danielle Kifooti that allowed me to settle into the role whilst dealing with the week to week operations of getting players on the paddock. I am very grateful for this support and look forward to our continuing relationship in future seasons.

I would also like to thank all the clubs within the District for making my first season in the job an enjoyable one. As I made my way around to all the grounds at different points over the course of the season, it was pleasing to be welcomed with such kind hospitality. It has been an absolute pleasure getting to meet the great people in your clubs and I look forward to working with you all next year.

A big thank you to the Sydney Roosters JRLFC for their continued partnership and support of our Mod competition. We really enjoy the integration of your teams in our district and we hope this continues for many years to come. I would also like to extend my gratitude to Phillip McMahon and the Balmain Referees Association for their continued service and assistance. They are a key component to the District and their level of service goes above and beyond every year.

I would also like to thank Paul Sironen, , NRL Game Development Officers - Chris Gale and Dave Fauonuku, the Balmain Tigers RLFC Board, our major sponsors – Painaway and Ryde Eastwood Leagues and NSWRL for their ongoing contributions, support and guidance. Without you all, the Balmain Junior League would not be as successful as it is.

And lastly, to Richard Kelly, Michelle Nielsen and the Balmain District Junior Rugby Board, thank you for everything you do for me and the District. It has been a pleasure getting to know you all and I look forward to working with you all during the 2020 season, which will hopefully be our best one yet!

What a great season 2019 has been in the Balmain District Junior Rugby League.

I was fortunate to continue building strong and positive relationships with the local Junior League Clubs and with the Board of Directors and associated staff.

It was great to handover the temporary football administration duties I was filling to Stacey Pittendrigh when she came on board as the fulltime Administrator for the District. Stacey has brought an impressive level of enthusiasm, professionalism and approachability to the role and I am extremely keen to work alongside her at NSWRL for the benefit of the Balmain District Junior Rugby League.

Pre-season Club Information Nights and Face to Face Ground Manager training were well attended. Clubs embraced the responsibility of creating positive Game Day Experiences for all participants and it showed week to week across the District.

Primary Schools

SECRETARY'S 2019 NRL community carnival saw the NRL Game Development Staff along with the full Wests Tigers first grade squad visit 18 Schools within the Balmain district. This year the REPORT message we delivered to close to 4000 students was about celebrating differences with a key focus on inclusiveness.

The NRL introduced the new League Stars program nationwide in term 3. League Stars is aimed at children aged 5-12 who do not currently participate in Rugby League with Lyn Phillis the aim of giving them the necessary skills and positive experience to transition to a junior Rugby League team. Undoubtedly a legend of the Balmain Tigers, Chalk started as a ball boy for the Tigers in 1955. He served as both a manager and selector with the Jersey Flegg teams in the 1970s and 80s, before joining the Balmain Tigers Board in 1985. He became Chairman in 1997 and was the inaugural Chairman of Wests Tigers.

John also served on the NSWRL, ARL and NRL boards from 2001 onwards, serving as NSWRL and ARL Chairman from 2010-2012. He held the position of NSWRL President from 2013 and was awarded Life Membership in 2015. He was recognised at the NSWRL Centre of Excellence in 2019 with a room named in his honour.

In 2016, Chalk was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) “for significant service to rugby league as an administrator at the state and national level, and to Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth.”

Few have served our club, nor our game, for as long and with as much distinction as John Chalk.

He will always be known as one of the great Tigers and will be sorely missed by all in our game.
