Federico Selvi A critical checklist of the vascular flora of Tuscan Maremma (Grosseto province, Italy) Abstract Selvi, F.: A critical checklist of the vascular flora of Tuscan Maremma (Grosseto province, Italy). — Fl. Medit. 20: 47-139. 2010. — ISSN 1120-4052. The Tuscan Maremma is a historical region of central western Italy of remarkable ecological and landscape value, with a surface of about 4.420 km2 largely corresponding to the province of Grosseto. A critical inventory of the native and naturalized vascular plant species growing in this territory is here presented, based on over twenty years of author's collections and study of relevant herbarium materials and literature. The checklist includes 2.056 species and subspecies (excluding orchid hybrids), of which, however, 49 should be excluded, 67 need confirmation and 15 have most probably desappeared during the last century. Considering the 1.925 con- firmed taxa only, this area is home of about 25% of the Italian flora though representing only 1.5% of the national surface. The main phytogeographical features in terms of life-form distri- bution, chorological types, endemic species and taxa of particular conservation relevance are presented. Species not previously recorded from Tuscany are: Anthoxanthum ovatum Lag., Cardamine amporitana Sennen & Pau, Hieracium glaucinum Jord., H. maranzae (Murr & Zahn) Prain (H. neoplatyphyllum Gottschl.), H. murorum subsp. tenuiflorum (A.-T.) Schinz & R. Keller, H. vasconicum Martrin-Donos, Onobrychis arenaria (Kit.) DC., Typha domingensis (Pers.) Steud., Vicia loiseleurii (M. Bieb) Litv. and the exotic Oenothera speciosa Nutt. Upon our arrival, just after 5pm and passing through passport control we collected our luggage and on to arrivals where we met up with Paul T, our local tour leader. With our luggage loaded into the minibuses, we set off towards Istria with the aim of passing through the very attractive historic centre of Trieste and then on along the motorway beyond the city towards Koper-Capodistria, the main port in Slovenia. Many, indeed most of the place-names in this report are in two languages, Croatian (or Slovene) and Italian. At the crossroads of Europe where the three main language groups meet (Romance, Slav and Germanic), the area is an ethnic mix with large areas of bi- (and even tri-) lingualism. Taking the road for the centre of Trieste along the Costiera we stopped at the Galleria naturale for views across the Gulf of Trieste and towards the Slovenian and Croatian coast of Istria. -

Based on natural selection, mutation and genetic drift, speciation occurs simultaneously in organisms linking them in complexes webs called ecosystems. Clarify what a species is, it is the first step to understand the biology of orchids and start protection actions especially in a fast changing world due to human impact such as habitats fragmentation and climate changes. I use the biological species concept (BSC) to investigate the presence and eventually the strength of mechanisms that limit the gene flow between close related taxa. -

The project was directed by the French Orchid Society and involved 3000 specialists in orchids. Overall, more than 110,000 stations were referenced and 160 taxa were reported with their range on 154 maps. This project is original by synthesizing, at large scale, much accurate naturalistic information from local surveys, thanks to a participative approach and on the basis of scientific objectives. Some orchid populations have been recorded for more than 20 years, revealing demographic trends at the scale of the coun- try. Guidelines for application IUCN Red List criteria at regional level have been applied in order to establish The French Red List of orchid species. This represents one of the few examples of IUICN criteria being applied at a regional scale for a plant family. Based on the IUCN categorization about 1 in 5 species is threatened, one as Regionally Extinct (RE), 4 as Endangered (EN) and 23 as Vulnerable (VU). -

Vos lusus, un bilan et quelques explications Dans la nature, c‟est-à-dire sur le terrain, les très nombreux amateurs orchidophiles observent avec beaucoup d‟attention et soigneusement, depuis des années, les différentes orchidées sauvages. Ils ont donc mis en évidence des différences, des anomalies, au sein des populations de chaque espèce. Certains observateurs qui en notent l‟emplacement, retrouvent la même anomalie, sur le même individu, d'années en années, comme par exemple des plantes possédant des fleurs à 3 pétales et 3 sépales. C‟est le signe qu'il s'agit très probablement d'une mutation. Comme le dit avec justesse pmb : « On suit un Ophrys provincialis de même type depuis 8 ans au Bois du Rouquan. Il revient d'année en année (enfin, les bonnes années à Ophrys !) ». De plus, lorsque la même anomalie est rencontrée chez plusieurs « espèces » distantes, voire chez plusieurs genres éloignés, cela rend très vraisemblable la possibilité qu‟il s‟agisse de la mutation d‟un même gène (exemples des fleurs à deux labelles ou à trois labelles, des fleurs à 3 sépales -3 pétales ou à 6 tépales, etc….). Nous nommerons lusus toute anomalie morphologique pouvant affecter le développement, la coloration, etc…., mais le plus souvent susceptible de modifier la fleur dans toutes ses composantes. Ces malformations parfois spectaculaires ont généralement une origine génétique (mutation, altération du niveau d‟expression des gènes). Elles se retrouveront donc quasi identiques sur toutes les fleurs d‟un individu, et resteront inchangées d‟une année sur l‟autre pour un individu donné. Nous ne nous intéresseront ici qu‟à ce seul type de cause.
