Hardiman 2005 ABSTRACT This dissertation marks the first synthetic and contextual analysis of domestic sculpture for the whole of the Hellenistic period (323 BCE – 31 BCE). Prior to this study, Hellenistic domestic sculpture had been examined from a broadly literary perspective or had been the focus of smaller regional or site-specific studies. Rather than taking any one approach, this dissertation examines both the literary testimonia and the material record in order to develop as full a picture as possible for the location, function and meaning(s) of these pieces. The study begins with a reconsideration of the literary evidence. The testimonia deal chiefly with the residences of the Hellenistic kings and their conspicuous displays of wealth in the most public rooms in the home, namely courtyards and dining rooms. Following this, the material evidence from the Greek mainland and Asia Minor is considered. The general evidence supports the literary testimonia’s location for these sculptures. In addition, several individual examples offer insights into the sophistication of domestic decorative programs among the Greeks, something usually associated with the Romans. -

Th roughout the period there were developments in decorative motifs, techniques, and skill with distinctive emphasis on the pleasing aesthetic through intricately elaborated objects made of a wide range of contrasting materials. Th ese include metal, clay, bone, textiles, wood, bark, horn, antler, ivory, hide, amber, jet, stone, fl int, reeds, shell, glass, and faience, either alone or in combination. Yet this period precedes the development of the state and urbanism, in which the creation of art became recognized as a distinct activity. Although the Bronze Age was a period of common cultural values across Europe, craft s were performed in regionally specifi c ways leading to diversity of practice. Local develop- ments in metalworking are well understood, but a frequent emphasis on metalworking has oft en been to the detriment of other craft s, some of which played a major role in everyday life. Th is chapter examines craft production in three contrasting materials that would have been widespread in the Bronze Age: ceramics, textiles, and bone. -

By the time he died in 1917, he was not only the most celebrated sculptor in France, but also one of the most famous artists in the world. Rodin rewrote the rules of what was possible in sculpture. Controversial and celebrated during his lifetime, Rodin broke new ground with vigorous sculptures of the human form that often convey great drama and pathos. For him, beauty existed in the truthful representation of inner states, and to this end he often subtly distorted anatomy. His genius provided inspiration for a host of successors such as Henri Matisse, Constantin Brancusi and Henry Moore. Unlike contemporary Impressionist Paul Cézanne---whose work was more revered after his death---Rodin enjoyed fame as a living artist. He saw a room in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York dedicated to his work and willed his townhouse in Paris, the Hôtel Biron, to the state as a last memorial to himself. But he was also the subject of intense debate over the merits of his art, and in 1898 he attracted a storm of controversy for his unconventional monument to French literary icon Honoré de Balzac. The Culture of Remembrance of World War II and the Holocaust in Unified Germany Christoph Thonfeld* Abstract Since the 1990s, Germany has dealt with the difficult integration of collective and individual memories from East and West Germany. Alongside the publicly more prominent remembrances of perpetration has occurred an upsurge in the memories of German suffering. At the same time, Europe has increasingly become a point of reference for national cultures of remembrance. These developments have been influenced by post-national factors such as Europeanisation and transnationalisation along with the emergence of a more multicultural society. However, there have also been strong trends toward renationalisation and normalisation. The last twenty years have witnessed a type of interaction with the ‘other’ as constructively recognised; while at the same time it is also excluded by renationalising trends. Researchers have described the combination of the latter two trends as the cosmopolitanisation of memory. This article adopts the diachronic perspective to assess the preliminary results since 1990 of the actual working of this cosmopolitanisation process within the culture of remembrance of World War II and its aftermath in Germany. In their foreign relations work, these non-state actors preceded the Polish-West German political relations that were established in 1970. The dissertation has a twofold focus on private contacts between these activists, and on public discourse through radio, television and print media, primarily its effects on political and social change between the peoples. My sources include the activists’ private correspondences, interviews, and memoirs as well as radio and television manuscripts, articles and business correspondences. Earlier research on Polish-German relations is generally situated firmly in a nation-state framework in which the West German, East German or Polish context takes precedent. My work utilizes international relations theory and comparative reconciliation research to explore the long-term and short-term consequences of the discourse and the concrete measures which were taken during the 1960s to end official deadlock and nationalist antagonisms and to overcome the destructive memories of the Second World War dividing Poles and Germans. -
Keltiké Makhaira. on a La Tène Type Sword from the Sanctuary of Nemea

ON A LA TÈNE TYPE SWORD FROM THE SANCTUARY OF NEMEA An iron sword (IL 296) was discovered in Well K14:4 in the sanctuary of Zeus at Nemea (today Archaia Nemea, Corinthia / GR) in 1978 (fg. 1, N). Although promptly published (Stephen G. Miller 1979; 2004) and displayed in the local archaeological museum, and known therefore for four decades now, it has received only very little attention so far (the only exception being a brief note in Baitinger 2011, 76). The present paper is an attempt to make up for this disinterest. DESCRIPTION The iron sword has a straight symmetrical two-edged blade tapering towards the point with some preserved wooden elements of the hilt (fg. 2). The measurements of the sword are as follows: overall L. c. 83 cm; blade L. c. 72 cm; blade W. at the hilt 4.9 cm; tang L. c. 11 cm; L. of the preserved wooden handle 6.5 cm; W. of the guard 5 cm; L. of rivets in the hilt 24 mm. The sword has not been weighed. The object was re- stored after its discovery; no information about the nature and extent of this intervention has been pre- served, however. It underwent a mechanical cleaning and was heavily restored with epoxy 1. A later and duly documented conservation in 2010 aimed mostly at the stabilisation of the object. The blade is bent but complete. In several spots (particularly in its upper fourth and towards its very end), the remains of iron sheet cling to the blade surface. -
