Neben kleineren Populationen in Rheinland-Pfalz, Niedersachsen und Sachsen liegt der Verbreitungsschweipunkt mit der größten Populationsdichte im Süden Brandenburgs und Nordsachsens. Der Falter ist eine Charakterart der sandigen und trockenen Kiefernwälder, insbesondere deren Ränder, Schneisen und Lichtungen. Die Larven leben an Schwin­ gelarten, Festuca sp., die Imagines sind auf Nektar angewiesen, wobei sie vor allem blau- bzw. violettblühende Pflanzen aufsuchen. Die Art zeigt dynamische Schwankungen hinsichtlich ihres Auftretens. In Jahren mit natürli­ chem Rückgang können anthropogene Einflüsse, die zu Veränderungen der Habitate beitragen oder die Larvalent­ wicklung nachteilig beeinträchtigen, zum Aussterben der Art führen.
