For the first 40 km or so. the Bharathappuzha follows an almost noftherli, irrtrrse till Palaqhi. A little rnore than two-thirds of this area (4.100 km') is within L Kerala and the remaining area (1786 km'?) is in Tamrl Nadu. Though Bharathapuzhahas a v. i,trge basin, the waier flow is relatrvely less compared to other long nvers in Keraia v because a large pofiion of tlie basin is located in the comparatively drier regions (Tamil a; \adu and Palakkad Gap). The rrver rs the Nile of Kerala and has the name Nila also. Its l_. main tributarres are Chitturppuzha, Kalpathypuzha, Gayatahnppuzha and t Thoothappuzha. l- Chitturppuzha starls from Nfoolathara Dam rvhere water reaches tiom many streams of l-. ChrttLrryuzha or Kannadipuzha has Palar, Aliyar, [Jppar as its tributarres. l_ Lr Chittur this river is knorm as Sokanaasini and in Kannadr it is known as IJ Kannadipuzha. It irrigates atrol'e 65kms in Palakkad. l-. The Kalpathipuzha originates in the upper slopes of the Western Ghats deep insrde IJ Palakkad district frorn the place called Chenthamarakulam in the hills, north of Walayar. li It rs fonned from the confluence of four streams, namely N{alampuzha, Wala}.ar, Koravar l- and Varattar. The N,[alampuzha Dam is built across this river just before it enters into Palakkad town. The river is named after the Kalpathi Siva temple in Palakkad town and iormed after the union of Korayar from Anamalai and Malampuzha at Kadukkamkunnu region. Gayathripuzha is one of tire rirain tributaries of the Bharathapuzha. Ga-vathripuzha has \,fangalam nver,A),al-urpuzha,Vandazhippuzha,Meenkarappuzha, and eh-ullbgr as its rnbutanes. l-l,- l- t't_ l' One of the problems faced by Kalpathypuzh4 like most of the o&er rivers in Kerala, is rilegal sand mkring. This has left many pits in the aver bed which lead to shrub growth. l' 'W'ater During summer the river is covered by a green carpet of Hyacinth {Perari local t' name) and other shrubs. In fact in the sufilmer m*nths, there is almost no flow in L most parts of the river, only with small ditches. The freshwater discharge from the river a; has been decreasiag ccatinuously. The main collectians were rj done from the pools like regions of the river and also from occasional, pits of sand L mining. lj IJ After ccunting, the fishes were released back to the river, afterpreser,:ing a fe.;r samples for identification. Water quality was analysed using the Water Quality Test Kit provided by the KSBB. Scoping study was coaducted on 20'h M*yo 2t10. The rapid infrastructure development and urbanisation leads to the mismatch in the demand and supply. The scarcity of resources leads to the illegal activity and degradation of the environment. This paper addresses the issues relating to sand mining in the BharathapuzhaRiver in Kerala India, its economic analysis and its consequences. Finally attempts to bring the attention of the international community for sustainable growth. Index terms: Sand mining, economic analysis, sustainable growth Introduction The Bharathapuzhariver in the Indian state known to be the Nila of Kerala. The Bharathapuzha River covers 155 KM in Kerala. The details course of the river has been shown in the figure no. 1. During of its course it covers the areas like South Chittur, kannadi Bridge, kalpathiPuzha, Mankara, Cheerakuzhi, Pattambi, thrithala, ThuthaPuzha, Kuttipuram and Ponnani sea level etc. In its upper course River carries large size rocks at high velocity due to higher steep. However, this inclination decreases from Pattambi to Kuttipuram Region where sand is deposited by the river. Sand mining is primarily carried out in this region. The river has over dammed in its course, mainly its water used for the irrigation purpose. The rapid globalisation and development leads to the scarcity of the natural resources like sand. As sand are the primary integrands for the construction projects.

BIJU (ALATHUR): I bring to the attention of the House a serious problem that struck Alathur Parliamentary constituency two weeks back. Following heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu, water was released from Aliyar Dam situated at the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border into my constituency resulting in serious damage. Without proper intimation and understanding the consequence of such an act, 45,000 cusec of water was released per second. This affected the Moolathara regulator and the associated Left Bank Canal (LBC) and Right Bank Canal (RBC) that distributed water to twelve gram panchayats in my constituency. With sudden inflow of water with immense pressure RBC was completely shattered. With this disaster, Kozhinjampara, Vadakarapathy, Erithyanpathi, Poplpulli and Elapulli gram panchayats wee completely affected. Today the reservoir situated between Aliyar Dam and Moolathara regulator is completely submerged in water. With the rapid inflow of water, agriculture was severely affected. Roads, bridges and houses were destroyed. One man lost his life. Hence, I request the Government to take immediate measures to rebuild Moolathara regulator and recover the function of RBC so that the second rotation of crops can be done without fail. This is of utmost importance as a large number of people of my constituency are farmers and rely on agriculture as their sole source of income. My constituency is also renowned for paddy cultivation and, if affected, will disturb the contribution of rice production in Kerala.

    Swami Dayananda AIM for Seva Chatralayam for Boys Student Strength: 35 ACADEMICS Overall, positive changes have been observed in our students with respect to studies, sports and participation in social activities. Many of our students come from poor backgrounds and lacked social skills and were poor in academics when they joined our hostel. Now, we have witnessed a huge improvement in their behaviour and outlook. CELEBRATIONS Independence Day celebrations saw flag hoisting in the hostel premises. WELFARE Our students regularly attend NSS (National Service Scheme) camps as well as seminars organised by the child welfare department. VOLUNTEER Kerala (Chatralayam - Palakkad) A volunteer group of NRIs aims to help develop musical talent in the students through the Karoke Insta Gana. SUSTAINABLE LIVING A well-constructed goshala houses 25 cows from where the hostel gets its daily requirement of milk. The hostel has a large vegetable garden with seasonal plants and various types of plantains. TRIPS The students were taken on a trip to the Ramaeshwaram temple, beach in Madurai, and to the Thiruparankundram, Pazhamudhircholai, Pillayarpati and Pazhani temples, besides an outing to Malampuzha dam gardens, Palakkad fort and Kakapathri car festival.

The BMCs of Kerala has also been declared as Environmental watch groups by the Government of Kerala vide GO No 04/13/Envt dated 13.05.2013. In Kerala after the devastating natural disasters of August 2018 Post Disaster Needs Assessment ( PDNA) has been conducted officially by international organizations. The present report of Rapid Impact Assessment of flood/ landslides on Biodiversity focus on community perspectives of the affect on Biodiversity and Ecosystems. It is for the first time in India that such an assessment of impact of natural disasters on Biodiversity was conducted at LSG level and it is a collaborative effort of BMC and Kerala State Biodiversity Board (KSBB). More importantly each of the 187 BMCs who were involved had also outlined the major causes for such an impact as perceived by them and suggested strategies for biodiversity conservation at local level. Being a study conducted by local community all efforts has been made to incorporate practical approaches for prioritizing areas for biodiversity conservation which can be implemented at local level.
