Digital Thailand1 ดนุวศิน เจริญ Synopsis In December 2016, Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-Ocha had led the government for more than two years. Driving the new government’s vision was the fact of an economy primarily based on agriculture, manufacturing, and tourism, but with inefficient government services and poor infrastructure, and a competitiveness ranking that placed Thailand behind other developing countries in many factors that determined a nation’s overall ranking. Nevertheless, all officials were confident that the planned digital economy policy would contribute immensely to national development, to people’s quality of life, and to the country’s competitiveness in preparation for the advent of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC). However, the problems attendant to development of digital economy were numerous, including government tardiness in adopting ICT technologies, limited population access to broadband internet, increasing cybercrime, inefficient payments and logistics infrastructure, controversial issues related to the Computer Crime Act of 2016 (as amended), digital divide, poor education, lack of research and innovation, and lack of public trust in transactions on the Internet – to name a few. Also, the military government’s recent announcement of its intention to control the access and flow of information on the Internet through introduction of a revised computer crime act had generated widespread criticism. Although the military government would vanish after promised elections, the Prime Minister had made it clear that his government was willing to do anything to ensure the success of the digital economy policy, which was to be his government’s major legacy. Thus, he had to determine what steps to take to implement the digital economy policy and devise strategies to deal with obstacles.

Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha Narendiradebyavati Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha Narendiradebyavati (Thai: พัชรกิติยาภา นเรนทิราเทพยวดี, RTGS: Phatchara Kitiyapha Narenthira Thepphayawati, also known as Princess Pa or Patty, born 7 December 1978) is a Thai diplomat and princess of Thailand, the first grandchild of King Bhumibol and Queen Sirikit of Thailand, and the only one of the seven children of King Maha Vajiralongkorn born to his first wife Princess Soamsawali. Early life and education Princess Bajrakitiyabha was born on 7 December 1978 at Amphorn Sathan Residential Hall, Dusit Palace in Bangkok, She is eldest child and first daughter of Vajiralongkorn and his first wife princess Soamsawali, She studied at the all-girls Rajini School when she was in elementary and junior high school. She moved to England and began her secondary education first at Heathfield School in Ascot, finishing at the Chitralada School. Princess Bajrakitiyabha received a LL.B. degree from Thammasat University, as well a B.A. degree in International Relations from Sukhothai Thammatirat University, both in 2000. She subsequently obtained a LL.M. degree from Cornell Law School in 2002 and a J.S.D. degree from Cornell University in 2005. On 12 May 2012, she was awarded an honorary LL.D. degree from IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law. On completion of her doctorate Princess Bajrakitiyabha worked briefly at the Thai Permanent Mission to the United Nations, in New York, before returning to Thailand. In September 2006, she was appointed Attorney in the Office of the Attorney General in Bangkok, and is currently appointed to Office of the Attorney General of Udon Thani Province.

Four key sectors picked in drive for export growth Source: The Nation (Link) The Commerce Ministry aims to drive exports in four key sectors - heavy industry, agricultural products and foods, petrochemicals, and jewellery and ornaments - in an ambitious bid to achieve overall export growth of 1.2 per cent to US$230.23 billion (Bt7.83 trillion) this year. "Although many organisations have revised down their export shipment targets to negative growth, the ministry will maintain its goal [1.2 per cent] as it foresees brighter export opportunities for some high-potential sectors, while the depreciation of the baht should benefit export expansion in the remaining months of the year," Commerce Minister General Chatchai Sarikalya said yesterday. The goal is to generate an additional $80.86 billion from the four priority sectors, bringing their combined full-year shipments to $141.56 billion. This accounts for 57 per cent of the total export-shipment target for this year, said the minister. In heavy industry, which includes automobiles and parts, computers and parts, construction materials, rubber products, electrical circuits, machinery, air-conditioners and electrical appliances, the ministry now aims to drive exports to $53.63 billion this year, from the earlier target of $33.08 billion. For agricultural products and food, the ministry hopes to drive shipments from $7.57 billion to $12.41 billion, while for petrochemical products, to goal is to lift exports from $6.29 billion to $9.99 billion. For jewellery and ornaments, meanwhile, exports are now targeted to increase from $2.97 billion to $4.82 billion.

Maha Sura Singhanat Somdet Phra Bawornrajchao Maha Sura Singhanat (Thai: สมเด็จพระบวรราช Maha Sura Singhanat เจามหาสุรสิงหนาท; RTGS: Somdet Phra Boworaratchao Mahasurasinghanat) (1744–1803) was the younger brother of Phutthayotfa Chulalok, the first monarch of มหาสุรสิงหนาท the Chakri dynasty of Siam. As an Ayutthayan general, he fought alongside his brother in various campaigns against Burmese invaders and the local warlords. When his brother crowned himself as the king of Siam at Bangkok in 1781, he was appointed the Front Palace or Maha Uparaj, the title of the heir. During the reign of his brother, he was known for his important role in the campaigns against Bodawpaya of Burma.
