Weekend a la Carte are a legally authorised trading body who are officially permitted to sell tickets for La Scala Opera House in Italy. Many ticket only web sites are not legally authorised to do so. We will always guarantee your seats and ticket level as soon as tickets are released (usually around 6 months prior). Day by Day Itinerary Day 1Fly to Milan and Private Airport Transfer to your hotel page 1/7 Fly to Milan where your private driver will be waiting to transfer you to your hotel. This transfer is private to you so there is no waiting around for a group. All of the hotels we use are in the centre of Milan, within very easy walking distance to the Duomo and La Scala opera house. Rest of day at leisure to have a wander. Day 2Day at Leisure and Attend La Scala Opera in the very best seats page 2/7 Day at leisure to explore Milan. The city can be easily travelled on foot, or there is an excellent Metro system. We recommend you explore the Duomo and rooftop, before heading to Castello Sforzesco to enjoy the museums. There is a very relaxing park joined to the castle. Take a stroll to the other side of the park where you can see the Peace Arch. This was built for Napoleon when he had temporary rule over Milan. On his departure from the city, the Milanese decided the arch was far to plain and it is now intricately decorated in true Italian style! The other main sight to visit is the Pinacoteca di Brera gallery where some of the best works of art are on display. Well worth a visit! This evening head to La Scala for your night at the opera. With your tickets you have fast access without having to queue at the Box Office. Be seated in the stall seats, which are the very best seats in the house. Please note there are very limited tickets for performance events prior to March. This gothic building was built in the 5th century and took almost six further centuries to complete. The tour is not complete without a trip onto the rooftop, allowing beautiful views across the city. The roof can be accessed either by lift or stairs. With the duomo being the centre-point of Milan, no trip to this Italian city is complete without a visit to this historical building. Price per person: From £125 based on 2 people. Lake Maggiore Day Trip Eescape from the city for a day by optingt for an island hop experience to Lake Maggiore, surrounded by majestic Alps and beautiful scenic gardens. You will be taken to Stresa, (around 1.5 hrs) for some time shopping, before your shared 2hr panoramic boat cruise on the lake, enjoying fresh crystalline waters. You will visit all three of the Borromee Islands – Isola Madre, Isola dei Pescatori and Isola Bella, before arriving back at Stresa to resume your private transfer back to Milan. Please note this is available from 01 April – 20 October on Sundays only Price per person: From £80 Day 3Visit to The Last Supper Head to Santa Maria delle Grazie which houses Leonardo da Vinci’s famous The Last Supper fresco. Witness The Last Supper with your timed entrance. This 15th century painting is one of the world most famous paintings and has led to many speculations and tales. One story goes that the monastery complained to Leonardo about the time it was taking him to finish the painting. He rather rudely wrote back to say that he had been struggling to find the perfect villainous face for Judas, and that he was now considering using the features of the prior who complained as a basis of Judas! Another claims that the loaves on the table if read from right to left reveals a hidden tune. But the most controversial story is the figure to Jesus’s right.     Mauro Guerrini receives Milano Ambassador Award The Milano Ambassador Programme is a project to promote the City as location to host conferences of relevant and international importance. The organizers of this project are Milan Municipality and Fondazi- one Fiera Milano, with Lombardia Region and Milan Province. On May 15th, within the ambit of the above programme, Mauro Guerrini, President of the National Committee of the IFLA 2009 World Library and Information Congress, Milan, received a relevant award as “Ambassador of the City of Milan”. The award was the recogni- tion of the great care and the full engagement that was lavished by Mauro Guerrini and the National Committee to promote Milan as host of the IFLA 2009 Congress.     THE PRECIOUS JEWELS OF THE MONASTIC ORDERS ANCIENT ABBEYS IN THE LOWLAND OF MILAN Among these monasteries we like to present the Cistercian centers of Chiaravalle and Morimondo, and those of Viboldone and Mirasole founded by the religious order of Humiliati. We must not forget that, in the past, in the vicinity of Chiaravalle and Viboldone, the navigable channel Vettabbia, dating back to Roman times, was an important means of transport of goods towards the Lombard capital, thus connected with the river Lambro, the Po and with Comacchio. ABBAZIA DI CHIARAVALLE The Cistercian A b b ey of Santa Maria di Chiaravalle, was founded in Lombardy, already home to numerous Benedictine monasteries, in 1035, thanks to the generosity of the Milanese population. It is the work of the n o ble Burgundian San Bernardo (1090 - 1153), abbot of Clarivaux and charismatic leader of the yo u n g Cistercian religious order, an important branch of the great Benedictine fa m i ly. Like the nearby abbey of Morimondo, the church and the adjoining monastery of Chiaravalle were built according to the tradition of the Cistercians, exploiting the typical local bricks. The abbey, erected near the Roman road towards the river Po , brought prosperity and importance to the economy throughout the area, thanks to the work of reclamation of the monks and the consequent flourishing of fa r ming and agriculture. The imposing elegant towe r, which still stands with its conical spire on the green countryside of Milan, was a symbol of reference for all the surrounding areas and a sign of the undisputed power of the monastery and the religious order.
