Brebner for the Friends of Sandbanks 26th October, 2020 Generation One 1. Thaddeus Ketchum #78513, b. in Herkimer County, New York.1 . The Ketchum Family Pioneer Life on the Bay of Quinte, 1904; (pages 467 - 470) "There is no authentic testimony that reaches farther back than the beginning of the nineteenth century in the history of this family. What we are principally concerned with, however, is that date of its advent in Canada, and here we are entitled to claim for the Ketchum family a place among the founders of Upper Canada. It was in 1812 that Thaddeus Ketchum, the pioneer, joined the stream of exiles - by this time one of considerable volume - and fixed upon Prince Edward County as a port of refuge in the storm which, in the southern part of the continent, showed little signs of abating. "What it was that determined Thaddeus on coming from Herkimer County, N.Y., all the way by land, or what actuated him to disregard the scriptural injunction which counsels that one's flight should not be in the winter, we cannot tell; suffice it to say that he moved his family and some portion of his goods in a sleigh drawn by a team of horses, and penetrated to what is now Green Bush, in the township of Hallowell; he removed afterwards to Athol, where he bought a small farm. Hi married Elizabeth Haukinson (sic) and lived to bring up a large family. He died in 1872, aged ninety-five years. "His eldest son, James Ketchum, reached nearer to the century mark than his father; he died in 1897, aged ninety- seven years. The second son, Thaddeus, married into the Lawson family. Two of the daughters, Eliza and Maria, settled in the United States. Parker Ketchum married Hannah Allison. This was the Hannah Allison referred to in the memoirs of the Allisons' families, who gave to Orville Allison, a grandson of the pioneer, Jeremiah Allison, a beautiful silk Union Jack made by hand that had been presented to her husband, Ensign Ketchum, when his troop of cavalry was disbanded in Picton seventy years ago. It is still in a good stated of preservation and flies to the breeze on gala days commemorative of Canadian history. Coming down to another generation, Eli Ketchum, the third son of the pioneer's eldest son, James, now seventy-four years of age, and resident in Picton since 1903, was a farmer in Athol and a Justice of the Peace there for about forty-seven years; he has also been Councillor of the township, County Councillor, school trustee and issuer of marriage licenses. Another grandson of the pioneer, Arza B. is a farmer in Athol, and occupies a substantial and artistic residence, built of stone, as one enters Cherry Valley from Picton." ' The stranger, or the citizen, who reverently and carefully walks among the ancient graves, on "The Burying Hill," at Plymouth, Mass., may read upon a memorial stone that marks the grave of one of the fathers, the following inscription: " Here lies buried ye body of Mr. Thomas Clark, aged 98 years. Departed this 'life March 24, 1697." From this man, whose mortal resting place is thus kept in remembrance, and who severed the instinctive ties that bound him to his native land, and left, forever, all the sacred associa- tions of boyhood that clustered around his home in the old world, to assist in laying the foundation of a great republic in the new, an extensive and intelligent race have sprung, if not like the descendants of Abraham, numerous as the ''stars of heaven," yet great in numbers, and great in influence, as the following pages will show. From the hardy and pious ancestors, who established them- selves, in hardship, in hunger, in peril and in toil, on the wild and comparatively sterile shores of New England, many distin- guished families have descended, but not many of these can show a better record than the descendants of the mate of the Mayflower.
