A football player, a drum major, a lifeguard and sometimes a wise-cracking kid getting into a little trouble, Dutch had a way about him that just made people smile.

Ronald Reagan had an illustrious career as a second lieutenant and Captain in the service, a sports announcer, a film and television actor, California governor (1966-74), host of a daily, syndicated radio program and newspaper column, President of the Screen Actors Guild and a popular public speaker, and of course as President of the United States.

As a movie star, the Governor and even as the President, Ron stayed in touch with the people he’d grown close to in the town that he would forever call “Home.” Dutch in Dixon: the early years

Dutch worked as a lifeguard for six years at Dixon’s Lowell Park where he was credited with saving 77 lives.

Ronald Reagan was first called “Dutch” as a young child by his father. According to Reagan’s autobiographies, he received the nickname soon after his birth, from his father’s remark that he looked like “a fat little Dutchman.” As a toddler, the name was reinforced because of the “Dutch boy” haircut, once popular for This is the room the Reagan brothers shared. little boys, that his mother gave him. The Nature Conservancy is committed to keeping bison as wild as possible, & prairie within the constraints of available space and human safety. They receive minimal veterinary care with a once a year restoration checkup at the fall roundup. Weather extremes, parasites, potential predators, and herd social dynamics are all realities for Nachusa's bison.

Nachusa Grasslands The 3,500-acre Nachusa Grasslands preserve consists of large patches of original prairie, woodland and wetland that are being reconnected through habitat restorations to restore one of the largest and most biologically diverse grasslands in Illinois. As part of the habitat restoration, bison were reintroduced in 2014 to improve the ecological balance of the natural prairie. Here is an example of one of the challenges they faced; the absence of clouds made for a beautiful day, but the sun cast shadows throughout the corral. As a result of the interplay between light and dark, the animals were very reluctant to enter the cube (area of corral leading into the chute). The photo below illustrates how dramatic the shadows can look to bison. The shadows create an illusion on the ground resembling a cattle guard, which bison know they cannot cross. Temple Grandin, in her Humane Livestock Handling book writes “…a distracting detail like a daily patch of sunshine in the main alley can cause animals to balk or turn around . . ." The wrong lighting can ruin the performance of a well-designed facility. ”At a recent conference I had the opportunity to consult with Temple in person; I showed her the photo and described The Prairie Room at Northwest Territory Historic Center what the animals features a wall mural with a life-size male bison on a floor display were doing. Without and informational panels that describe the bison of Nachusa, the hesitation she said, Prairie Ecosystem and the Biodiversity of Nachusa Grasslands. “Nope, those animals Located at 205 W. Fifth St. in Dixon. will not go in!” This year we learned how shadows affect bison behavior. In the future, when we can afford to make changes, we will improve our operations. We plan to build a roof over the working area and install lighting within the cube and squeeze chute to eliminate the potential for shadows. The roof will also allow us to work safely during inclement weather. By Cody Considine, Restoration Ecologist, Nachusa Grasslands, originally published in Spring 2018 issue of Prairie Smoke.
