The young men and women lying in pools of blood, everyone rushing down the stairs in total shock, total panic.” And then came the defining moment: the recklessness of jeunesse, the passion of belief in a justice burning bright: “I jumped up on the fountain in the middle of the square, the one that is still there, and I began to shout: “Comrades, don’t disperse! Victory will be ours! Don’t leave. The time has come. We will win!” “I was,” he says now, “absolutely sure, profoundly sure, that we were going to win”. But there was no winning that day; just as there was no pretending that what had happened would not change the history of a country that, liberated from Adolf Hitler’s Reich barely six weeks earlier, was now surging headlong towards bloody civil war. The article unravels the ties between conservatism, the state, and the far right in Greece. It explores the complex social and political reasons which facilitated the emergence of far-right groups in Greece during the civil war and have allowed them to survive for seven decades and to flourish from time to time. The author pays particular attention to paramilita- rism as a distinct component of the Greek far right. He follows the activities of ‘Golden Dawn’ and other far-right groups, in particular their paramilitary branches. To the wider public, among the most shocking aspects of the rise of ‘Golden Dawn’ was the use of violence by its paramilitary branch, tagmata efodou. The article examines the far right’s relationship to the state and the security services, and explores its overall role in Greek politics and society. He demonstrates how an understanding of the decades following the civil war are indispensable to making sense of recent developments. Spyridon Tsoutsoumpis is a Visiting Research Fellow at Wolverhampton University’s School of Social Historical and Political Studies and an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Manchester’s School of Arts, Languages and Cultures. In Greece’s national elections of 2012 the openly neofascist ‘Golden Dawn’ party (Xrysi Avgi) won an unprecedented 7% of the vote and sent a total of 18 of its members to parliament (MPs). The attack was carried out in retaliation for the murder of Paulos Fyssas in Keratsini by the Golden Dawn member Roupakias and other scum-members of the neonazi party. The attack is also dedicated to the dispossessed proletariat from Africa and Asia, every immigrant who is being reviled, who is a constant target of racism in order to make up the cheap labor force.

Introduction 2017 has seen a further worrying growth of far right and fascist forma- tions in several European countries. May brought the advance of Marine Le Pen into the second round of the French presidential election. The following month the Front Na- tional increased its presence in the French National Assembly, though fell short of the numbers to form an official parliamentary group. In September the Alternative for Germany (AfD) made a major breakthrough to enter the Bundestag for the first time, winning 12.6 percent of the national vote. The party has gone through a succes- sion of radicalisations since its formation as a free-market Euroscep- tic party. It now has a hardened anti-Muslim central ideology, which organises its propaganda and programme. Most concerning is that its growth as an electoral force has been accompanied by the increas- ing weight of its «fascisising wing». Entry into first regional-state and now the federal parliaments has not provided a «domestication» of its message. Far from it. At one end of the spectrum of radical right wing formations in Eu- rope – ranging from racist populists to fascists – stands Golden Dawn in Greece. It is a neo-nazi party. Its leader, Nikos Michaloliakos, says that Golden Dawn hails from «the seeds of the defeated army of 1945», that is from the beaten armed forces of the Third Reich. It was the third party in the Greek parliament elected in Septem- ber 2015.
