  • 1. Introduction. It Is a Fact That the Consumption of Illegal Drugs Is A
    1. Introduction. It is a fact that the consumption of illegal drugs is a potential health hazard which can cause mental and physical damage. Even so, it is equally clear that drugs and their use have a long history. Writers such as Thomas de Quincey, Charles Baudelaire or Samuel Taylor Coleridge all used drugs and produced works related to or inspired by their drug use. Confessions of an English Opium Eater (1821), Artificial Paradises (1860) or Kubla Khan (1816) would never have come to light if the writers had not been under the influence of certain drugs. The specific aim of my study is not to defend or condemn drug use but to analyze the antilanguage of non-canonical literary works, namely popular song lyrics which carry drug and marginalized subcultural content in a bid to decipher the subtle implications and insinuations in those lyrics. References such as those to ‘Lysergic acid diethylamide’ in the Beatles’ song ‘Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds’ or ‘E’ for the drug Ecstasy by drug users remain opaque to those who are not themselves familiar with drug culture. The more indecipherable the words are the more effective is the antilanguage. A reasonable person might well take the words literally and think they are innocent because this language has been created with the aim of secrecy “the language is secret because the reality is secret” (Halliday, 1978, p.172) The saying “it takes one to know one” applies to this kind of antilanguage as it would in all likelihood take a drug user to be able to automatically understand the true meaning behind the lyrics, without further study.

Login or Register Article View The Stranglers Back to Issue Live ‘78, SF (DVD) Target Video Send This CD Review to a Friend From MVD distribution, comes yet another Target/San Francisco classic, this time from one of Britain’s original punk heroes, The Stranglers. Shot only three years after the forming of the band in 1974, Live ‘78 offers a rare glimpse of the band early in their career, and this is what gives this disk it’s value. The video was show by Joe Rees himself, the founder of Target Video, who was way ahead of his time when it came to documenting the best years of punk. Although short in length, Live ‘78 gives you a front row seat at a show that was in support of the bands first two albums, Rattus Norvegicus and No More Heroes. While not a complimenting film, the video provides an honest look at a fairly crappy performance by the band. Frontman Hugh Cornwell’s vocals are not up to par, the keyboards and guitars suck and the band seems to be focusing more on insulting their audience than anything else. But then again, not only was this punk, this was punk at it’s peak. There is no need for forgiveness, simply sit back and enjoy a history lesson firsthand with one of the greatest bands punk has given us. - Larry Trujillo ADVERTISEMENT Copyright Zeromag.com http://www.zeromag.com/articles/cd_view.php?id=510&pi=07/5/2005 8:52:52 AM.

Protesters rushed the hallways of buildings with megaphones, calling fellow students to join in. Students and facul- ty held a rally in the Peace Garden, sharing personal stories of hardships they faced in response to budget cuts at the university. At noon, an estimated 400 activists marched through the heart of the campus, spanning from McKee Fisk to the Music Building. The protest finished at the Henry Madden Library, where more than 80 activists staged a sit-in at the Haak Center, demanding to speak with university President John D. Welty.
