Only if a volunteer comes forward within the next couple of weeks – before you read this – will it be possible to make the arrangements in time to include the details with our April to July Area News. Many members have told me how much they have enjoyed the walks and hope they will continue, but apparently no one is both able and willing to take over the organising. I am very sad to think they may have come to an end, but hope perhaps they may be restarted in the future? Would someone like to volunteer for 2011? I will do all I can to help with the initial arrangements, explain how I have organised things and what I have found works best – which is not to say that there is any requirement to follow the same pattern. Indeed a new team can bring fresh ideas, and certainly two or three people working together would find it beneficial to spread the responsibilities. Andy Williams from NCC has promised to provide support and encouragement and Sharon Bland will no doubt also do all she can to assist. Andy was out providing support on all five walks in 2009, Sharon missed the last two because of medical problems, now resolved, but prior to that liaised on all advance planning, both months ahead and during the few days before each walk. We worked well together and that could continue in the future – if Norfolk Ramblers find someone to take care of our share! Good support can be expected from NCC, they really do want the walks to continue and recognise the benefits that have accrued with County Council and Ramblers working together. Indeed the regular programmes have only succeeded over so many years because we did co-operate. I do thank all of you who have helped me, this year and in the past, leading, backmarking, checking passengers onto the busses, selling tickets – and those of you who have just faithfully turned up and supported the events, showing your enjoyment, making all the efforts worthwhile. To see Norfolk’s Linear Walks programmes carrying on into the future would be an extra reward. 25th October 2009 Sheila Smith That Word There is an antiquated word that has come back to haunt me – but perhaps it isn’t just me? Thirty or forty years ago my mother would say “are you going on a hike this weekend?” “Hiking” was a popular pastime in the 1920s when my mother was a young woman, although never, I think, much to her taste – but how that word used to grate with me! However until recently, except as surviving in “hitchhiker” I thought it long gone, and good riddance. First when it reappeared I thought it was just folks being rude about ramblers, but now it seems to be used by some ramblers, especially younger ones. I can understand a wish to be modern and up to date, but how can stepping back ninety years have anything to do with updating the Ramblers’ image? If you really do need a new word find one for the twenty-first century. Distance: Around 5 miles there and back to the Holt Station of the North Norfolk Railway. Or around 9 miles there and back if you include a visit into the town or to Holt Country Park. Conditions: An easy riding and flat route. The first section to Holt Station is largely traffic‐free and suited to all ages. The sections into the town and the park are on‐road but our routes use quiet back streets. PLEASE TAKE CARE TO LOOK AHEAD FOR OBSTACLES WHEN RIDING ON TRAILS ‐ AND ADVISE THOSE WHO ARE BEHIND YOU Turn right on to the road out of the cycle hire centre and at the junction turn right again. Follow this road until it takes a sharp right, carry straight on at this point down a track with a sign saying 'No Tourers Beyond This Point').
