He also had the highest ringer percentage in one game, 88.2%, to win that special award prize. M. Tamboer, of Wichita, lost only to Lattray for runner-up spot. In the 16 round-robin class B. Vicki Winston, won great applause when she defeated Marvin Reheis, Kansas State Champion in a one-game playoff. Each had a 14-1 record. She pitched brilliantly in the meet to prove why she is the World Champion Lady Pitcher. Ray Cavin, St. Joe, Mo., won the award for highest qualifying score of 256. All six States were represented with pitchers. Classes C. D. & E. had to be added as about 60 pitchers were in the meet. More color was added to the tournament when the referees appeared in black & white- striped shirts & caps to match. Don Koso, Regional Director, attended and expressed satisfaction and pleasure in our operation of such a fine & colorful tournament. State cham- pions from Kan., Mo., Nebr., Okla., & Iowa easily demonstrated why they are champions, but the Colo, champion failed to appear. 32 trophies, 6 special awards, & cash sent the players on their way home in a happy mood. The entire tournament committee and many others also, functioned efficient- ly, time and space forbids mentioning all their names. To all horseshoe pitch- ers the Committee extends thanks for coming and some so very far. Without your loyal support our first "Heart of Kansas" tournament could never have been such a definite success. They, their relatives & friends also enjoyed beautiful Gage Park & all its facilities for entertainment of visitors. The writer presented Park Commissioner Goodin who spoke and mentioned he is expanding horseshoe grounds & facilities over Topeka in 1965 to meet the increased demands for courts by Topeka Citizens. This Heart of Kansas meet will be an annual event in Topeka, & in 1965 we plan to increase it to cover more States. I would be derelict if I failed to express appreciation to the Editor of the National Horseshoe Pitchers News Digest for excellent service in publi- cizing our tournament; therefore I do offer my sincere gratitude for a job so graciously done.

Our regrets because we were short on courts forcing us to 25 point games in classes C and D. William Porter successfully defended his tital by sweeping the field, in class A, with Joe Zichella second and John Fulton third. Class B was won by Carpenter who swept the field but three men tied for second with R. Cullum taking second on points. F. Pluchino nosed out L. Gancos on points. Class C was won by our State Secretary Wm. Fournier with five wins and two losses. Again three men tied for second with Washam taking second on points. J. Giddis nosed out A. Lund 138 points to 134, for third. Class D turned out to be a real contest with three men tieing for first and two for fourth. The three winners tossed a coin and odd man stayed out with the other two playing each other; then the winner played the odd man for the trophy. J. Harwelik took first. A. Szurley second and Rahn third. All men were placed in classes of there known or stated ability and the results show the advantage of this over qualifying.
