    CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE : A Review o f the Literature The John Jay College Research Team KAREN J . TERRY, Ph .D . Principal Investigator JENNIFER TALLON Primary Researcher PART I - LITERATURE REVIEW his literature review provides the reader with an overview of major academic works concerning child sexual abuse in the general population . This is a comprehensive review of the available literature, though it is not a meta-analysis (a synthesis of research results using various statistical methods to Tretrieve, select, and combine results from previous studies) . During the course of the past thirty years, the field of sex offender research has expanded and become increasingly inter-disciplinary . It would be nearly impossible to review every piece of information relating to the topic of child sexual abuse . Instead, this is a compilation of information pertaining to theories, typologies and treatments that have attained general acceptance within the scientific community. I In reviewing the literature concerning sexual abuse within the Catholic Church, the amount of empirical research was limited, and many of the studies suffered from methodological flaws . Additionally, much of the literature consisted of either anecdotal information or impassioned arguments employed by various researchers when characterizing the responses of the church to this incendiary issue . In providing the reader with a comprehensive review, it was necessary to summarize every point of view no matter how controver- sial. Any of the ideas expressed in this review should not be considered indicative of the point of view of either the researchers at John Jay College of Criminal justice, or the Catholic Church . One aim of this literature review is to put into perspective the problem of child sexual abuse in the Catholic Church as compared to its occurrence in other institutions and organizations .

Pastor David ‘Packie’ Hamilton will be speaking on the theme ‘How Healing Comes’ at churches including St Anne’s Cathedral, St George’s, Belfast, and Lisburn Cathedral. David was imprisoned in 1978. He had a strong Christian conversion in 1980 which he attributes to the fervent prayers of an elderly lady called Annie Beggs. On his release from prison in 1983, David became a full time Christian worker, evangelist and preacher, working firstly with Prison Fellowship and Teen Challenge before becoming a pastor of a large independent church in Manchester. He is now retired and undertakes preaching engagements wherever and whenever called. He is a very good preacher and has a repertoire of a rich number of factual stories to tell and brings them alive with his style which can be very humorous at times. On previous visits to Belfast, many have commented on how impacted they were by David’s testimony and preaching. The Rape Myth Acceptance scale and Belief in a Just World scale were completed by 191 participants during the pretest. Mock news stories that varied in whether were supportive of the victim or the perpetrator, and comments that were either supportive of the victim or the perpetrator, were shown to 106 participants during the posttest. After reading the stories and comments, the participants completed the Rape Myth Acceptance scale, Belief in a Just World scale, Identification scale, Judgment Questionnaire, and questions over the message and comments. After viewing the stories, participants tended to adhere to rape myth acceptance less than prior to the stories. Men were more likely to endorse rape myth acceptance, then women were. The effect of the story on rape myth acceptance was not mediated by identification with the victim. There were no significant effects for rape myth acceptance and belief in a just world in terms of the story being framed positively for the perpetrator or framed positively for the victim. The victim framed story lead to greater judgments of attribution of guilt for the perpetrator.

The literature has shown that self-blame has uniformly negative effects on a victimized woman’s emotional and psychological health, including poor adjustment, and higher levels of sexual dissatisfaction, depression and global distress. Behaviors and situations during and after the experience that correlate with self-blame that have been studied include alcohol use and knowing the perpetrator.
