More than a Family Affair: Using Family History in Creative Nonfiction Room 205 A&B, Level 2 ( Jeremy Jones, James McKean, June Melby, Justin St. Germain) We all have those oft-repeated stories of larger-than-life uncles and of the courtship of great-grandparents and of closeted skeletons in the old homeplace. But how do we take these passed-around stories and move them beyond family reunions? How do we determine what is the stuff of literary nonfiction and what is best relegated to family history? Panelists whose books come from presses large and small discuss effective techniques for collecting and crafting—and publishing—family lore. 10:30 am to 11:45 am R136. Robert Bly and the Minnesota Writers' Publishing House Room 101 J, Level 1 (Cary Waterman, Louis Jenkins, Kate Green, Tom Hennen) The Minnesota Writers’ Publishing House, started by Robert Bly in 1972, was modeled on the Swedish Writers’ Publishing House to shift power in publishing and give writers more influence. The first seven published chapbooks were selected and edited by Bly. Panelists will discuss their experiences with the House and Bly’s influence and read from their chapbooks and those of Tom McGrath, Keith Gunderson, Franklin Brainard, and Jenne Andrews. 12:00 pm to 1:15 pm R161.     BEFORE COLUMBUS FOUNDATION PRESENTS THE AMERICAN BOOK AWARDS 2004 America was intended to be a place where freedom from discrimination was the means by which equality was achieved. Today, American culture THE is the most diverse ever on the face of this earth. Recognizing literary excel- lence demands a panoramic perspective. A narrow view strictly to the mainstream ignores all the tributaries that feed it. American literature is AMERICAN not one tradition but all traditions. From those who have been here for thousands of years to the most recent immigrants, we are all contributing to American culture. We are all being translated into a new language. BOOK Everyone should know by now that Columbus did not “discover” America. Rather, we are all still discovering America—and we must continue to do AWARDS so. The Before Columbus Foundation was founded in 1976 as a nonprofit educational and service organization dedicated to the promotion and dissemination of contemporary American multicultural literature. The goals of BCF are to provide recognition and a wider audience for the wealth of cultural and ethnic diversity that constitutes American writing. BCF has always employed the term “multicultural” not as a description of an aspect of American literature, but as a definition of all American litera- ture. BCF believes that the ingredients of America’s so-called “melting pot” are not only distinct, but integral to the unique constitution of American Culture—the whole comprises the parts. In 1978, the Board of Directors of BCF (authors, editors, and publishers representing the multicultural diversity of American Literature) decided that one of its programs should be a book award that would, for the first time, respect and honor excellence in American literature without restric- tion or bias with regard to race, sex, creed, cultural origin, size of press or ad budget, or even genre.

Below is an alphabetical listing of staff who have joined us since our last meeting in August of 2015 and of faculty who are joining us this academic year. Arbuckle, Nathalie - Office Coordinator I, Registrar’s Office/Academic Advising Illinois Wesleyan welcomed Nathalie in April. Prior to coming to campus, she worked as the admissions communication management specialist at Eureka College for two years. She also served eight years as an administrative assistant in the El Paso Gridley School District. Bromaghim, Anna - Administrative Assistant - Campus Events and Conference Services, Dean of Students B.A. Illinois Wesleyan University, M.A. University of Connecticut In November, Anna was welcomed back to campus. While a student at Illinois Wesleyan she worked in the Admissions Office in various positions. Prior to her return to campus, Anna worked in Minnesota in a retail manager position and put her web skills to use volunteering for a women’s group. She is happy to be back on campus! Brown, Nicole – Visiting Assistant Professor of Sociology B.A. Illinois Wesleyan University, M.S.Ed. Illinois State University, Ph.D. University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Dr. Nicole M. Brown is a Visiting Assistant Professor at Illinois Wesleyan University and a research faculty affiliate at the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign's Cline Center and the National Center for Supercomputing Applications. Dr. Brown's area of research include Sociology, consumerism, black feminist theory and computation and she has expertise in comparative historical research methods, as well as mixed methods computation research.
