And they have the returning experienced talent to do so in fine fashion. With coach Chris Johnson having retired this past January after 12 years at the helm, Abbie Wright has taken charge of the SPU program, looking to keep the team on an upward trend that saw an improvement in the win column last season and the chance for even more this fall. Among the 16 players on the squad list are three 2016 All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference honorable mention picks: junior middle blocker Shaun Crespi, junior setter Symone Tran, and sophomore outside hitter Gabby Oddo. The 6-foot-2 Crespi racked up 151 total blocks in 2016, an average of 1.42 per set that ranked No. 2 in the conference and No. 5 in all of Division II. That last time an SPU player had that many in a single season was 1992, when Tosca Lindberg recorded 193. Crespi also pounded 204 kills and hit .230, tops among the team’s regular attackers. Tran earned 1,085 assists (10.24 per set). She was the first Falcon to top 1,000 in a season since Shelby Swanson finished with 1,105 in 2012. Tran also had 336 digs, the second-highest total on the team, and recorded 16 assist-dig double-doubles. Oddo was leading the way on offense for Seattle Pacific with 242 kills (3.41 per set) when she went down with a season-ending injury on Oct. 15 and was sidelined for the final 10 matches. However, her total still ranked second on the team, and her average wound up No. 4 in the GNAC. Other starters returning for the Falcons are senior outside / opposite Hannah Lautenbach, senior outside hitter Colleen Hannigan, and junior libero Amanda Ganete. Lautenbach led SPU in total kills with 256 (2.42 per set) and also had 304 digs (2.87) and 82 blocks. Her block total was second on the team. Lautenbach can and has played every position across the net. Hannigan finished with 149 kills (2.16) and 184 digs (2.67). She stepped up in a big way after Oddo’s injury, with four matches of double-digit kills and three kill-dig double-doubles in the final month of the season. Ganete came up with a team-high 511 digs (4.82 per game) and also was a solid server with 16 aces. Speaking of defense and serving senior Sophie Kuehl is a solid producer in both departments. She led the team with 26 aces, and added 204 digs. Also back for SPU are junior setter Molly Langdon, sophomore middle blocker Nicole Tchabanov, sophomore outsides Mallie Donohoe and Jaeden Hooker, and sophomore libero / defensive specialist Katie Mansfield. Maddie Batiste, a 5-foot-10 opposite / outside, heads a class of four freshmen. Batiste was the Class 6A (large school) Oregon Player of the Year in 2016 after leading Central Catholic High School of Portland to the state championship. Joining Batiste in their first year of college volleyball are 5-10 outside hitter Olivia Turner (an Arizona all-state honorable mention pick), 6-2 middle blocker Gabi Stegemoller (a Portland All-Metro first-teamer, and 5-8 setter Casey Kispert (a two-time Cascade Conference first-teamer).

FALCONS HISTORY Good things on the volleyball court have come in bunches for the Seattle Pacific Falcons. Twice, they have won consecutive Great Northwest Athletic Conference championships: 2005 and 2006, then 2010 and 2011. All four of those titles guaranteed a trip to the NCAA Division II West Regionals, and the Falcons had a school-record three straight Regional appearances from 2009-11. Overall, Seattle Pacific has been to the NCAAs seven times, the last five with coach Chris Johnson. The Falcons have put four GNAC titles onto the banner in Brougham Pavilion, and five conference crowns altogether. The other one came in the (2000). SPU also won that conference’s West Division title in 1998. For their first five seasons (1986-90), the Falcons were part of NAIA District 1. In 1991, they moved up to NCAA D-2 and joined the Continental Divide Conference. That circuit, then with five teams, became the Pacific West in 1992. Seattle Pacific stayed there until joining with nine other Pac West schools to form the GNAC in time for the 2001 season. Of the 30 seasons that SPU has been on the volleyball court, 14 have ended with 20 or more victories, including four straight from 1998 to 2001. In 2000, the Falcons forged a 20-match winning streak that took them all the way to the NCAA tournament with coach Kellie Radloff (formerly Kellie Ryan). That first-ever NCAA appearance was followed by another in 2001. The 2010 team set multiple school records, including best winning percentage (.897) and most consecutive wins to start the season (16) on the way to a final mark of 26-3 and a first-ever appearance in the West Region title match. Coach JoAnn Atwell-Scrivner started SPU’s volleyball program in 1986. When she stepped down after the 1999 campaign, she had a 260-223 record. Ex-Falcons player Radloff took over, and began her tenure with those back-to-back NCAA Tournament seasons, going 24-6 in 2000 and 20-8 in 2001. She coached through the end of the 2004 schedule, finishing with an 83-51 overall record.

FALCONS COACH ABBIE WRIGHT

When the calendar flipped to 2017, the idea of moving to Seattle to become a head volleyball coach for the first time was nowhere on Abbie Wright’s radar. Just seven weeks after the new year began, a new chapter in Wright’s life began when she was named the new head coach at Seattle Pacific. “I think it’s going to be a great fit,” said Wright, who was the 2015 NAIA Assistant Coach of the Year at Biola University in Los Angeles. “I feel like it’s a place where the culture of the program and the environment have been set up really well by Chris Johnson. It’s a place that has great kids and competitive volleyball. Seeing the location and the quality of the school – it’s everything I would want to be a part of.” She becomes just the fourth head coach in the 31-year history of the program. Wright served the past four seasons as an assistant to head coach Aaron Seltzer at Biola, which is transitioning to NCAA Division II and will join the Pacific West Conference this fall. During her first year in 2013, the Eagles reached the NAIA national title match before falling short of University of Texas-Brownsville. Biola returned to the tournament in 2014, 2015, and 2016. Their overall record during those four seasons with Wright as an assistant coach was 115-24. The 2014 campaign included a share of the Golden State Athletic Conference title. In 2015, the program achieved its first-ever No. 1 national ranking. It was after that year when Wright earned the American Volleyball Coaches Associa- tion / NAIA Southwest Region and National Assistant Coach of the Year Award. Following the 2016 season, she was named to AVCA’s “30 Under 30” list. That honor recognizes top coaches across all levels of the game who are age 30 or younger. “I think being a young coach, I’m ready to grow alongside my players,” Wright said. “I’m a student of the game, and that’s something I really take pride in, constantly searching for the best way to do things. I’m prepared to work hard and stay a student of the game, and to grow, and get better in my coaching style.” A setter during her days on the court, Wright still owns the Biola records for most matches played (143), most sets played (508), and service aces (182). Her teams made it to NAIAs all four years, advancing the semifinals in 2007 and 2008, and to the quarterfinals in 2010. Wright graduated in 2010 with a degree in sociology, and minors in mathematics and Biblical studies. She was recruited by SPU before ultimately deciding to attend Biola. “It’s kind of cool now that I’m coming back to coach there,” she said. Wright appeared in 143 matches for the Eagles, an all-time record. She also owns the program records for sets played (508) and aces (182). In addition to the all-time records, Wright led her team in hitting percentage, assists, and service aces at various points throughout her career. She was a two-time NAIA and GSAC scholar-athlete, and a two-time GSAC Player of the Week. ASSISTANT COACH KORRIN WILD

Korrin Wild is starting her first year at Seattle Pacific after playing four years at Fresno State and has served as that school’s director of volleyball operations for the past two seasons. As an outside hitter from 2010-13 at Fresno State, Wild ranked among program’s top 10 all-time for kills, digs, service aces, and sets played. She was an All-Mountain West first-team selection as a senior in 2013, and made the All-Western Athletic Conference second team as a sophomore in 2011. She later played professionally for a year in France. Wild served as an interim assistant coach for Fresno State for one season before focusing her attention full-time on the director of volleyball operations position, aspects of which included budgeting, recruiting, and serving as an academic advisor. “Not only was she a decorated and very experienced player, she is someone who also knows how to coach very well,” SPU head coach Abbie Wright said. “For being as skilled as she is, she knows how to teach the game, and she understands the strategy behind it. Korrin is a very personable individual and relates really well with people.”

ASSISTANT COACH KIN YUN

Kin Yun is starting his seventh season at Seattle Pacific – and he definitely is a long way from home. Yun is a native of Quincy, Mass., and graduated from Rivier College in Nashua, N.H., with a business administration degree in 2004. As a player for Rivier, an NCAA Division III school, Yun could put the ball down or set it up. He was the first player in school history to have 1,000 career kills, and is still the only Rivier player to finish with more than 1,000 kills and 1,000 assists. Yun also served as an assistant coach at Rivier for one season. He was inducted into the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Hall of Fame in 2010. Yun was the New England Player of the Year for high school boys volleyball as a senior at North Quincy, and was a three-time all-conference player. He currently coaches with Club Wahine in Seattle. Yun would like to visit China with his parents to get a better understanding of their childhood and visit the village in which they grew up.

ASSISTANT COACH CAROLYN FARNY

Carolyn Farny is in her third year as a volunteer assistant coach at SPU. However, she brings ample coaching experience to the team. The native of Fort Wayne, Ind., is a graduate of the University of Washington. She has coached for various periods of time since 2002, having worked at UW camps and also with the Seattle-based Cascade Volleyball Club. At Concordia Lutheran High School, Farny was named the Fort Wayne Volleyball Player of the Year as a senior, and was a two-time Indiana All-State selection. She also made her mark as a basketball player and as a student. On the court, she set school records for most rebounds in a season and career. In the classroom, she earned a perfect 4.0 grade-point average. Farny then headed west to join the Huskies, and was on the 2005 team that won the NCAA national championships. She has lived in Switzerland for six months as an au pair. In addition to volleyball, Farny enjoys watching football and gymnastics. 2 COLLEEN HANNIGAN BRENTWOOD, CALIF.
